Vidalia in Paris Review"Vidalia in Paris" is a transporting read: Sasha Watson deftly captures those moments of great change in a person's life that are at once scary and exhilarating. Vidalia is at once intensely familiar with her insecurities and yet inspires with her strong character. As others have noted, I could hardly put the book down!Vidalia in Paris Overview

At the Firefly Gate ReviewSometimes good things really do come in small packages. Linda Newbery's "At the Firefly Gate" is a gem of a 152-page novel for the Middle Grade reader.
"At the Firefly Gate" weaves together two stories set some fifty years apart with the help of one ghost, some visions, and an elderly neighbor. The contemporary story begins when sixth-form student, Henry, moves from London to Suffolk: "3, Church Cottages, Crickford St. Thomas, Suffolk, was the sort of address Henry's mum had always wanted."
Henry doesn't share this dream, however, and to add insult to injury his parents moved before the last week of school. To help him make friends over the summer, they force Henry to spend time with his prickly next door neighbor, Grace. Grace is a year older than Henry and wants little to do with him. Fortunately, her great aunt Dottie takes an instant liking to Henry and makes him feel at home.
On his first evening in Suffolk, Henry catches sight of a man standing by the gate at the end of Henry's garden, staring up at him. The man is smoking and surrounded by fireflies. Soon Henry is dreaming from the point of view of this man, the dreams taking him back fifty years to a war-time food stand and a pretty girl with bright blue eyes.
Newbery brings the present and past together beautifully in "At the Firefly Gate." The ghost story never seems contrived--the present and past overlap neatly in Henry's new village life. I also appreciated that Henry, albeit momentarily freaked out by the changes in his life, is more curious than frightened by his glimpse into the past. Henry takes his challenges as they come, be they real world (Grace, new school, new friends) or ghostly.
"At the Firefly Gate" is a stunner--a book I'll be pushing on everyone I know older than eight years old.

The Summer of Moonlight Secrets ReviewUnlikely friendships, secrets and intrigue converge one hot, lazy summer at The Meriwether, a famous antebellum hotel smack in the middle of Florida.
Allie Jo lives at the Meriwether because her parents manage the hotel. Chase is a guest while his father uses the hotel as a home-base for a series of travel articles about the Sunshine State. And Tara, a mysterious stranger, simply emerges from the water of Hope Springs one moonlit night. As the summer wears on and these three very different characters bond in friendship, Tara's secret is revealed. It's then that Allie Jo and Chase must figure out how to help Tara with a problem/situation that seems insurmountable.
The Summer of Moonlight Secrets is told in three unique voices. Author Danette Haworth has a knack for creating a strong sense of place with a setting that seems almost magical while still feeling within the reader's grasp. This middle grade novel is fresh and thoroughly enjoyable.

Sisters of Isis: Divine One - #2 ReviewIn the first book of the SISTERS OF ISIS series, Sisters of Isis: The Summoning (Sisters of Isis #1), we were introduced to Sudi, Dalila, and Meri, who had all discovered that they are descendants of the Egyptian Pharaohs and that each of them possess their own power. Sudi was trying to let the news sink in while also attempting to maintain the same life, getting a date with her crush, Scott, and trying to defeat the Cult of Anubis. Well, accomplishing one out of those three things isn't so bad.
Now it's time for Meri to tell her story. Meri's life was never that simple, what with having a mother who is a very respected politician and the press always following her every move. And discovering that she has special powers just makes things worse. At least she has Dalila and Sudi to keep her on her feet.
But Meri's life is just prone to problems. Turns out Sudi's crush, Scott, is beginning to be interested in Meri. Yet Meri isn't at all interested in Scott, since she can't get Abdel out of her mind. If only she didn't act like such a dork and mess things up whenever Abdel is around. Aside from that, Michelle, one of the popular girls at Meri's private school, has decided to make Meri her next target. And the newspapers are starting to catch Meri at her worst moments.
While trying to find solutions to these problems, it's up to Meri, Sudi, and Dalila to defeat Apep, their newest enemy. But is this just too much for Meri to handle?
As the second novel in the SISTERS OF ISIS series, Lynne Ewing takes readers deeper into this new world. Meri helps us understand that being well known has more disadvantages then advantages and having friends that can help and understands you will make it easy to resolve any problems. Fans of this series will be satisfied with DIVINE ONE and all that is has to offer.

Wise Child ReviewWise Child is a beautifully written book for younger readers. It contains colourful historical detail and paints a vivid picture of the magical, mystical story of a childs life with a solitary witch or 'Doran'. Wise Child becomes orphaned and in the village auction it is decided that she should live with the local wise woman, Juniper, whom the villagers rely on in times of sickness. However the local Priest, Fillan, has the power to turn the villagers against Juniper in a time when suspected witches were often tortured and killed... It is obvious that the beliefs/cultures included in this book have been well researched, understood and brought to life by Furlong. Of all the books I have ever read, I can truly say that Wise Child is my favourite. I have read this book four times and am now 16 - too old for it really but the story and setting is so rare that I can only hope Furlong will write an adult version for me. Five Stars for a book which has provided much enjoyment as well as influencing my own views and interests through the years.Wise Child Overview

Bad Girls Don't Die ReviewI didn't think I'd like this book; it doesn't take much to scare me out of my wits, and I don't typically read novels dealing with ghosts and possession.
But I read this one anyway. And I LOVED it.
Bad Girls Don't Die is more than a ghost story. There's a touch of romance and an air of mystery, and a challenge to really get to know people before slapping a label on them and deciding you can't be friends with them--a mistake most people, including me, frequently make.
Bad Girls has a well-paced, character-driven, intriguing plot that kept me turning the pages for hours when I only meant to read for minutes. Furthermore, if I had a Top 10 list of my favorite fictional people, Alexis would be on it. She's smart, funny, unafraid of getting her hands dirty, and I really enjoyed her first-person narration. And she has pink hair!
On a couple side notes, Bad Girls is a pretty squeaky clean read, ghosts and all. There's no sex, drugs, or gratuitous swearing--and I really appreciated that. (The cleanliness also felt natural, which is another plus. Cleanliness can feel just as forced as "edginess".) Thank you, Katie Alender, for acknowledging that those things are not a part of every teenager's life. Also, while Bad Girls is exceptionally well put-together, the ending wrapped up a little too quickly--and awkwardly--for me. But it fit. Overall, I have no large complaints.
If Twilight is a vampire book for people who don't like vampire books, Bad Girls Don't Die is a ghost story for people who don't like ghost stories. And I highly recommend it!

Before I Fall ReviewFriday, February 12th should be just another average day for popular, beautiful Samantha Kingston. But it's far from it--her ride home after a late-night party ends in a car accident, only when Sam wakes up, it's Friday, February 12th again. Forced to re-live the last day of her life seven times, Sam struggles to understand the meaning behind these experiences and the significance in her own life and actions. Because only when she can get her last day exactly right will she ever be able to take the next step.

With keen insights and startling candidness, Lauren Oliver's debut novel is a frank, if not at times brutal look at high school social circles and the careless cruelties and bullying that occurs on a daily basis. Sam is one of the mean girls, and she shrugs off her biting words and actions as something that just happens, collateral damage of living through high school. But through every complex and carefully plotted event, Oliver peels back the layers of Sam's life and teaches us all that every little deed has a consequence, and no act goes unnoticed. Though Sam is by no means a likable character at the beginning of the novel, as her character is revealed and she learns a thing or two about the things she has done in her life and the person she has become, she morphs into a true, selfless, and caring heroine, despite her many flaws. The story line is addicting and suspenseful. and as each "day" passes and Sam begins to get things right, the question that has been looming in the back of your mind since the end of the first chapter--What will happen to Sam?--becomes more and more urgent. Oliver is skillful at wielding suspense and heartbreak, making you think hard about the value of your own life and actions.

Before I Fall is a haunting and beautiful book. It will float around at the back of your mind long after you've read it.Before I Fall Overview

Deep Secret ReviewSeldom recently have I simply enjoyed reading a book as much as I enjoyed Diana Wynne Jones' Deep Secret. Jones employs a mixture of engaging characters, interesting fantasy concepts, and a light touch with serious undertones, to create a novel that is infectious and absorbing.
Right from the beginning we know something is up, as narrator Rupert Venables is called away to the Koryfonic Empire, to give his stamp of approval as a Magid to a legal preceding there. Koryfonic Empire? Magid? We are told that the Multiverse consists of worlds arranged in a sort of infinity figure, with one half (including Earth), negative magically (this is the Naywards half). These worlds tend not to believe in magic, and magic is harder to do there. The other (Ayewards) half are positive magically, and creatures such as centaurs can exist there. The Koryfonic Empire is somehow very important, and it occupies the exact middle of the infinity sign. And Magids are some variety of wizard, with the duty to subtly influence events on whatever worlds they are responsible for in the appropriate direction. Rupert is Earth's junior Magid, and he is fresh from helping out in Yugoslavia and Northern Ireland, when he gets sent to the Empire.
This is a bit of a complicated setup, but it's not really necessary to worry about it too much. Rupert is soon engaged in two succession problems. His mentor has died, and he must select a new Magid from among several human candidates. In addition, the Koryfonic Emperor is assassinated, and he has to try to track down the proper heir: a process complicated by the previous Emperor's paranoia, which caused him to hide away his heirs so they wouldn't try to take over before their time. An alternate narrative path starts to follow Maree Mallory, one of the Magid candidates (which ought to be a clue to any reader).
The action converges at a Science Fiction convention. Much of the action is superficially light in tone, including some funny bits involving the difficulty of navigating the hotel's corridors, which reminded me of stories of real world conventions. But at the same time the concerns are deadly serious, and Jones doesn't cheat us there: real mistakes are made, people are really hurt and killed. So it's not just a light-hearted romp, and though it's often funny, Deep Secret is not a comedy.
What it is, is a thoroughly involving book. Jones is one of those natural storytellers: her books compel reading. The characters are real, and very likable. The plot is exciting, and resolved logically. The magical system is lightly sketched, but what we see is interesting and well drawn. The resolution is largely what we expect, but it also involves satisfying surprises. This book kept me up late at night reading, and made we eager for each chance to read another chapter. It's not perfect: the overall setup, though interesting, is a bit strained, and a bit too lightly sketched, which for me reduced the immediacy of some of the events. And structurally there is a slight burp: the book ends, more or less, and then there is an odd sort of coda, which really fills us in on an event from the earlier of the book that we had missed. But Jones finds a way to round up that coda nicely, without causing a muffled end to things. And I came away from this book a satisfied customer. Highly recommended.Deep Secret Overview

Falling Through Darkness ReviewCaroly MacCullogh writes a very interesting fast-paced novel. It addresses human isolation and teenage angst. Through her extraordinary style she weaves a very nuanced story that stays focused for easy enjoyable reading. Its refreshing to read such clear, crisp and succinct prose. No wasted words here. I suspect the author is a poet at heart. I hope she will soon be inspired to put her poetic style to prose again.
If you read this book you will not be disappointed. Like me, you will realize you are reading the first book of a gifted young writer who is certain to have a long successful writing career. I can't wait for her next book.Falling Through Darkness Overview

Losing Christina: Fog ReviewLosing Christina: Fog is the reissue of Caroline B. Cooney's original book The Fog. Why they decided to retitle the three books I have no idea, but the pages are set up just like they were in the original versions, so really the covers just look a little more slick. The Losing Christina trilogy details a year in the life of thirteen-year-old Christina Romney from Burning Fog Isle, who moves onto the mainland of a small town in Maine so that she can continue secondary school. She and three other students board with the Shevvingtons, the school principal and his wife, who delight in destroying the souls of young women. Christina has no choice but to fight the Shevvingtons, which isn't easy when she has no friends and her parents believe the Shevvingtons, not her.
Fog, as well as its counterparts Snow and Fire, is a chilling story because it presents a child's worst nightmare: for adults to ignore you when you're telling the truth. The Shevvingtons' evil power lies in the fact that they are the adults in charge whom everyone believes, rather than Christina. Their actions will make your blood boil because it is so easy to see how wrong, and how sick, they are, but it is also easy to understand how the townspeople would believe the polished faces they present.
Caroline B. Cooney's gothic horror trilogy is not just about evil, though. Christina experiences all kinds of emotions that most people can relate to: the fear when she has to move away from her family and friends, being nervous about making friends, wanting a boyfriend, facing unfair teachers and assignments. She is a normal, well-drawn thirteen-year-old who unfortunately has to face something that most thirteen-year-olds do not.
The age range in this book would probably appeal most to people between the ages of 10-15, but the fight between good vs. an unconventional evil is something that everyone should learn from.Losing Christina: Fog OverviewThe Shevvingtons are perfect. Mr. Shevvington is the charming, handsome principal of Christina's school. His wife is a dedicatedEnglish teacher. When the Autumn fog rolls over the coast, Christianand Anya begin boarding at the Shevvington's home, where Christinadiscovers that nothing is as it seems. Anya is slowly losing her mind, and Christina knows the Shevvingtons are behind it. But who will takeher word against that of the Shevvingtons? This is book one in theLOSING CHRISTINA series.

Forgiven ReviewKula Baker has always lived on the edge of danger with an outlaw for a father. But now that she's grown, she's ready to go out into the world and make a respectable life for herself, where hopefully she'll catch the eye of a rich young man who will marry her. But when her father refuses to leave outlawing, saying that he has one last piece of business to take care of, Kula is forced to go alone...only to witness her father being arrested for a murder he didn't commit. Kula travels to San Francisco, hoping to find a man named Ty Wong and a mysterious box that will save her father...and ends up discovering long-buried secrets about her father she never expected.

Forgiven is a fast-paced and unique historical novel, with a strong and noble protagonist. Kula is headstrong and determined to save her father, but a little naive in her methods. After a life slightly outside of the law, she's certain that marriage will give her the kind of respectability and security she craves. However, she is in for a few surprises as her romantic interests don't always go the way she plans and she falls for a Chinese man. Their romance seems a little rushed, but it is sweet and complements the more dangerous aspects of the novel as Kula searches for her father's box and in doing so, stumbles upon the darker side of turn of the century San Francisco with its human trafficking of female Chinese immigrants. That aspect, while horrifying, was a fascinating bit of history that Fox didn't expound upon nearly enough. The book ends with the great earthquake that shook the city in 1906, which hurriedly forced the book to conclude realistically, but slightly unsatisfactorily. Forgiven is a book that contains an interesting, complicated narrator and some fascinating historical tidbits, but as a whole seemed a little disjointed. The companion novel, Faithful, was a much better read.Forgiven OverviewKula Baker never expected to find herself on the streets of San Francisco, alone but for a letter of introduction. Though she has come to the city to save her father from a cruel fate, Kula soon finds herself swept up in a world of art and elegance - a world she hardly dared dream of back in Montana, where she was no more than the daughter of an outlaw. And then there is the handsome David Wong, whose smiling eyes and soft-spoken manner have an uncanny way of breaking through Kula's carefully crafted reserve. Yet when disaster strikes and the wreckage threatens all she holds dear, Kula realizes that only by unlocking her heart can she begin to carve a new future for herself.

Through Eyes Like Mine ReviewThe quiet power of Noriko Nakada's childhood memoir, Through Eyes Like Mine, is rooted in the author's spare, graceful prose. Nakada's is the rare memoir that captures the reader through careful observations and a minimal, yet absorbing present-tense child voice.
The story opens with an image of moonlit frost on junipers on the night of Noriko's birth. Her Japanese-American father and her German-Irish mother live in Bend, Oregon, where Nori grows up with her older brother and sister, all of whom look different than everyone in the small town. When Nori is five, the Nakada's differences are highlighted by the arrival of Mitch, a six-year-old boy they adopt from Korea, who comes kicking and screaming into a family of strangers.
There is much that goes unspoken in Nori's home, and much that she is left to make meaning of on her own. Silences settle like snow in young Nori's world, masking the darker contours below. In Through Eyes Like Mine, Nakada creates a kaleidoscope of arresting images that transport readers of any age back to the mysteries of childhood and the enduring struggle to find one's place.Through Eyes Like Mine OverviewThrough Eyes Like mine is the story of a childhood told through the present-tense voice of Nori Nakada. Born to a Japanese American father and German-Irish mother in rural Oregon, Nori's family becomes increasingly diverse when they adopt a six-year-old boy from Korea. She struggles to find comfort within a family, a community and a world that is both simple and complex.By examining her family's silences, she begins to understand life, death and her own identity. The joys and challenges of growing up invite the reader to recall the world through eyes like mine.

Divided Kingdom ReviewIn Divided Kingdom society has become troubled and fragmented - obsessed with acquisition and celebrity, it is a place defined by misery, envy, and greed. Crime is rampant; the courts are swamped, the prisons overflowing, the divorce rate following marriage quickly and predictably. Faced with lawlessness and chaos, the current government - hidden in an underground bunker - is forced to make a radical decision.
The Kingdom is to be divided into four countries, this political solution, or "rearrangement" comes with considerable risk, but is seen as the only alternative to avert certain anarchy. Each citizen is psychologically assessed and placed, sometimes with force, into four administrative units, each corresponding to one of the medieval "humours."
There's the Red Quarter, inhabited by the cheerfully sanguine, and where Matthew Micklewright, our main protagonist, then aged eight, lives; the Yellow Quarter, where the choleric rage and beat each other up; the Blue Quarter, populated by the stoically phlegmatic; and the "Green Quarter that harbors melancholic depressives.
Concrete boundaries are thrown up, rigidly controlled by the border police, and each country is sealed, fearful of the threat of psychological contamination. The rearrangement deliberately manufactured to create a climate of suspicion and denial between each country - people burying parts of their personalities that don't fit, and hiding their secrets that could now be judged and condemned.
One night, as the roundup begins, young Matthew is cruelly separated from his parents and taken to an immensely sinister boarding school, where he is lectured on the Rearrangements political rationale. The country had become "a troubled place," an enthusiastic Miss Groves tells the class, and this resolution was seen as the only alternative. Subsequently our hero -now renamed Thomas Parry- is given a new family and groomed for advancement in the Red Quarter regime as a civil servant.
After years of studying and career diligence, Thomas is finally given the senior administrative job he has been aiming for; this involves the ongoing process of psychological testing and relocation of members of the population who fail to meet the demands of his quarter. Now he is able to attend commissions and attend cross-border conferences, a privilege available only to the autocratic elite.
Dispatched to a cross border conference in the Blue Quarter, Thomas clandestinely visits a nightclub, the Bathysphere. Shocking images of his past come back to haunt him, of his mother, and of his first true love. He isn't sure what to make of these memories, all he knows is that he has experienced something so totally profound and addictive that it skews his sanguine nature, setting him on a course of self-discovery as he travels through the divided kingdom's four quarters.
Thomas becomes caught up in a terror attack in the Yellow Quarter; is shipwrecked on the coast of the Blue Quarter, and is farmed off to an angst-ridden Green Quarter boarding house, eventually escaping and joining the itinerant and stateless White People, a band of nomadic outsiders who drift aimlessly from quarter to quarter, spurned and shunned by the populations of this new and unsettling world.
Reticent of Huxley's Brave New World, author Rupert Thomson, rather than focusing on the nuts and bolts, the mechanics of this dystopian world chooses instead, to chart Thomas's tortured emotional landscape, as he becomes an outlaw, a fugitive, traveling from quarter to quarter, experiencing first hand each facet of the human condition. Our hero starts off with such noble pursuits and intent, convinced that his role is safe guarding the values and integrity of the Red Quarter. "I realized that he had to fight for the system, had to believe in it, or my removal from my family will have been for nothing."
But as Thomas travels, and witnesses the Yellow Quarter's inhumanity, the Blue Quarter's innocently sweet nature, and the Green quarter's chronic depressives, he realizes that the divided kingdom is united after all, by just one thing: "longing," a longing by most people to perhaps be reunited again.
But like the Kingdom he journeys through, Thomas realizes early on, that there will be no going back, there would be no going back to the part of him that had been buried for so many years, and there would be no more glimpses of that forgotten life. Going to Club Bathysphere exposed the need in Thomas, the ache - the hollowness that lay beneath a life so seemingly well ordered, even charmed. Fragments of another life had been released, altering him forever. His experiences lead him to admit that everything he had built had been revealed for what it was - "mere scaffolding."
Thompson evokes a bleak, desolate, almost apocalyptic world, where the psychological outlines of the different Quarters are sharply defined; its landscape of fleeting female figures, semi-erotic encounters, and of canals, waterways, and even underwater seas. It's also a world of transient, almost spiritual figures, fighting for survival in cities that embody all that is selfish and self-absorbed about capitalism.
Although the narrative tends to lose impetus towards the end, Divided Kingdom is mostly a gripping saga, a part adventure story, and part treatise on the human experience, a portrait of a world that is divided into a type of "psychological racism," where misguided authorities " have force-fed us our own weakness - our intolerance, our bigotry, to create a world where the people seem to need it, and even thrive on this type of prejudice." Mike Leonard November 05.

Tower of the Elf King (Secrets of Droon, 9) ReviewHappiness and joy descended upon our household when the most recent Droon installment arrived. While my son and I are avid consumers of serial chapter books, the Secrets of Droon remains our favorite. Fortunately, number 9, which introduces a huge plot twist, did not disappoint. For the first eight installments, the bold young adventurers from the upper world -- Eric, Julie, and Neal -- have teamed with the Junior Wizard, Princess Keeah of Droon, to reign in the evil aspirations of the dastardly Lord Sparr. In The Tower of the Elf King, however, Lord Sparr is notably absent, and our young friends confront a new, surprisingly complicated foe, Gryndl. In addition to Gryndl, plus some old friends (particularly Kahn, King of the Purple Lumpies -- long my son's favorite), our friends meet The Maker, whose inventions feature prominently in the story line. Experienced Droon readers will be pleased to learn more of the illusive, shape-shifting Queen Relna, at the same time remaining wary of Sparr's eventual return. Once again, it's refreshing that the author does not weigh down the narrative rehashing prior adventures, but, for this reason, it's probably best to begin with the first book in the series. Once your kids begin, it won't be long before they'll be joining us in anticipation of the tenth installment!Tower of the Elf King (Secrets of Droon, 9) OverviewSomebody has robbed the Lumpies' village! And it can't be Lord Sparr - because he has mysteriously disappeared. The rumor is that a terrible beast is behind the crime. So Eric, Julie and Neal setoff with Khan and Princess Keeah to find the creature. Instead they find a big Surprise!

If the Witness Lied ReviewThe Fountain family has faced endless grief within the last couple of years and their future seems quite bleak as well. First the children's mother died, after refusing treatment for her fatal cancer so that she could give life to their baby brother Tris. Then, just two years later their father dies in a terrible accident leaving the four Fountain children alone and parentless with only their self-involved Aunt Cheryl left to care for them.
Within weeks the two Fountain daughters, Madison and Smithy flee, one going to live with her godparents and the other going to a boarding school hundreds of miles away. This leaves Jack to be the strong one, the one to take care of Tris, because Cheryl really only cares about herself and home makeover shows on TV.
As Tris' third birthday approaches, Cheryl decides that she is ready for fame and sells the family's soap-opera story to a reality television producer and Jack knows that his life is about to be thrown upside down once again. The thing is though this event brings the family together again. Along the way they find out some troubling information that makes them think....did the witness of their dad's death lie?
I believe if you looked up Caroline B. Cooney up in an encyclopedia you find "... author of heart-thudding thrillers." I could literally not stop reading this book and absolutely gobbled it up. The book as a whole was great, but there were definitely some holes that I wish had been patched up.
First of all, the plot was very original and was the driving force behind the "heart-thudding" feeling you got while reading the book. I loved how the author took a mystery and turned it into a novel about family, friendship, trust, loss, and love. These themes melded perfectly throughout the book and really made the reader take a step back and evaluate their own life in a different light. I did have a couple issues with the plot though. Some of the events, such as Cheryl gaining custody automatically over the children and there being no original investigation into the father's death, were completely left out. This left a big gap for me as I felt it could have been a crucial part in the story. The storyline was also a bit predictable, but the suspense created by the little details really helped the reader to not focus on what was coming next.
As for characters, this is really where the book lacked. All of the characters were one-dimensional; especially the adults, and I wish they were so much more. The little we did get to learn about the characters though was great. Jack was definitely the hero in the book and by far a favorite, as he sacrificed his social life in order to step up to the plate and care for his younger brother.
Another plus for this book is the author's writing style. She made the book incredibly realistic and all throughout the story I felt like I was reading an article from the local newspaper instead of a piece of fiction. Also the point of view she wrote the book in was quite interesting. It felt like a mix between third and first person, but all in the present tense, much like in Lisa McMann's novels. This quirky style took a while to get used to but in the end it definitely added to the book.
Overall this was a good novel that all teen readers will enjoy. It had enough action to satisfy anyone and will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. I loved how the author dealt with the breaking and healing of a family and really showed what love is and its immense powers.

The Secrets of Droon #4: City in the Clouds ReviewMy (almost 4-year-old) son loves for me to read from this series, and I share his enthusiasm. This creative ongoing saga of three friends -- Eric, Julie, and Neal -- transported to the mysterious world of Droon by a magic staircase, continues to captivate and rivet. If anything, my son's interest has grown rather than waned with each successive book. The author's skillful introduction of colorful characters -- including the princess/junior wizard Keeah, the spider-troll max, and my son's favorite, Khan, king of the purple lumpies -- permits endless role playing after a reading session. Even the villians, Lord Sparr and his red-faced warrior Ninns perched atop their lizard steed groggles, prove menacing without scaring younger readers. Droon fans will enjoy that this edition permits them to finally meet the Viking, King Zello. I strongly encourage these books for young readers and fervently hope that Mr. Abbott sticks with this wonderful endeavor. The Secrets of Droon #4: City in the Clouds OverviewUh-oh! Neal has a problem. He's turned into a bug-again. Eric andJulie hope someone in Droon can help. Princess Keeah thinks theremight be a cure in the City in the Clouds. Too bad the friends only have one day before the city disappears!

The Enchanted Castle ReviewWorking in a bookstore, I meet a lot of people, especially parents buying books for their children. As you can imagine, several of them ask, "What do you have that's like Harry Potter?" I always recommend E. Nesbit's books. They never know who I'm talking about. But they usually become interested very quickly.
Edith Nesbit was an outspoken British writer who wrote enormously entertaining children?s books in her later years. Many of these books combine normal, everyday children with magical themes or elements. In 'The Enchanted Castle,' three children - Gerald, Cathy, and Jimmy - stumble upon a lush, beautiful garden, where they find a princess who has been asleep for 100 years. Or is she really who she says she is? All the children know is that something strange is going on - like why are the statues moving?
'The Enchanted Castle' IS enchanting. The writing is colorful, exciting, and engaging. If your child is looking for something in the Harry Potter vein, the E. Nesbit books are just what the doctor ordered. Kids won't even care that it was written nearly 100 years ago. It still reads pretty well today, and that's what counts.
291 pagesThe Enchanted Castle OverviewThis anthology is a thorough introduction to classic literature for those who have not yet experienced these literary masterworks. For those who have known and loved these works in the past, this is an invitation to reunite with old friends in a fresh new format. From Shakespeare's finesse to Oscar Wilde's wit, this unique collection brings together works as diverse and influential as The Pilgrim's Progress and Othello. As an anthology that invites readers to immerse themselves in the masterpieces of the literary giants, it is must-have addition to any library

The Poisoned House ReviewSet in 1850s London, The Poisoned House follows the life and times of young servant girl Abi at Greave Hall, an elegant and sophisticated estate. While Abi has a tough life, it's a stable one where she is able to make her own way. But the master of Greave Hall is slowly slipping into madness, and Abi is convinced that there's something ghostly lurking deep in the building, that knows that truth behind the family's secrets.
Now, I'm not much of one for horror novels. It's just not my thing, though I've read a few books with some mild horror elements to them. Since the summary of The Poisoned House seemed so intriguing, I decided I may as well try it out. While I did have some problems with the slow pacing at the beginning and what felt like a small lack of characterization, even when it came to protagonist Abi, overall I found Poisoned House to a rewarding, dark and thrilling novel.
Most importantly, author Michael Ford did an amazing job of creating a lush tone of fright and eerie darkness. I was creeped out just by reading some of the parts about Abi and her experiences exploring the house -not just any old, traditional haunted house. Something of a more subtle horror story, Poisoned House is an enjoyable, eerie ghost story that's worth the read. The Poisoned House OverviewLife can be cruel for a servant girl in 1850s London. Fifteen-year-old Abi is a scullery maid in Greave Hall, an elegant but troubled household. The widowed master of the house is slowly slipping into madness, and the tyrannical housekeeper, Mrs.Cotton, punishes Abi without mercy. But there's something else going on in Greave Hall, too. An otherworldly presence is making itself known, and a deadly secret will reveal itself---a secret that will shatter everything Abi knows.
