Vidalia in Paris Review"Vidalia in Paris" is a transporting read: Sasha Watson deftly captures those moments of great change in a person's life that are at once scary and exhilarating. Vidalia is at once intensely familiar with her insecurities and yet inspires with her strong character. As others have noted, I could hardly put the book down!Vidalia in Paris Overview

By Bread Alone ReviewNew Zealand author Sarah-Kate Lynch has come up with a quirky, original, touching charmer of a book about an English wife and mother who is anything but ordinary.
Esme Stack makes sourdough bread every day of her life, and its texture, aroma and "ambience," if you will, measures out her days. But when the book opens, Esme cannot bring herself to bake her bread, something she has been doing for decades. Her husband Pog (Hugo) is worried sick; her irrascible and nasty father-in-law Henry is secretly worried, and her divinely unique 4-year-old son Rory is not right at all.
As the story unfolds in delightfully fey meetings between Esme and her deceased Grandmother (you have to read it to believe it) and in flashbacks to the past, it gradually becomes clear that Esme and Pog have had a great tragedy: one that is barking at the heels of Esme's sanity. But what? On the outside, Esme is a ferociously organized housewife, baker, artist, nurturer of sick and lame animals (the bits about the donkey are hilarious). We know she once had a career, but not why she left it. We know she is holding something terrible at bay, but not what it is.
The gradual breaking of Esme's shell of protection is heartbreaking in its intensity and almost joyous in its resurrection of her soul.
This is simply a fabulous book. I am looking forward to reading "Blessed Are the Cheesemakers," by the same author! What a find!By Bread Alone Overview

Roommates Wanted: A Novel ReviewI enjoyed this novel. I think I'd enjoy reading a grocery list if it were written by Lisa Jewell! It's not her best work but it is well worth reading. I laughed aloud many times during this book, I'd say it is her most humorous, anyway. In the UK this book is titled '31 Dream Street', so be warned if you've read that one, 'Roommates Wanted' is exactly the same book! Sometimes it's a bit confusing when publishers do that.Roommates Wanted: A Novel Overview

The Story of The Amulet ReviewE. Nesbit completed her best known trilogy of fantasy books with The story of the Amulet. It returns us to the lives of the brothers and sisters we met in Five Children and It and The Phoenix and the Carpet. But the tone is darker and the freedom from adult observation is due to lonelyness rather than holiday freedoms, as was the case in the earlier novels. The children's parents are in danger of their life, and they find themselves faced with the chance to help when they meet the iracible Psammiad again. It leads them to a time travelling amulet, which might have the power to grant them their hearts desire.
Much of the charm of this book comes from the realism of the children's characters. No matter that they dress in the plus fours and petticoats of the Edwardian age, their bickering and wonder in the face of magical events makes them timeless.
A marvelous book, and a farewell to a familier group of children hovering on the verge of adulthood. The Story of The Amulet OverviewYou will eat your breakfast before it's cold, won't you?' said Anthea. 'Yes, we had a splendid time. The charm made it all dark, and then greeny light, and then it spoke. Oh! I wish you could have heard it--it was such a darling voice--and it told us the other half of it was lost in the Past, so of course we shall have to look for it there!'--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Night Falls Darkly: A Novel of the Shadow Guard ReviewWhat if there was more to the most famous serial killer in history than we ever imagined? What if it was 1888, and Jack the Ripper's atrocious crimes were about to usher in an unprecedented age of evil?
What if Archer, the gorgeous immortal hunter who came to slay him, found Jack as elusive as he was deadly, and what if the intrepid woman that Archer couldn't resist loving was about to become Jack's next target?
Kim Lenox's first story in the Shadow Guard series will leave you breathless. Night Falls Darkly is an amazingly smooth blend of history, romance, and supernatural suspense. Sensual, elegantly written, and very original, it contains cameos from historical characters that will delight you. The writing is so evocative, you will find yourself standing in elegant ballrooms and dark alleyways with these characters.
Elena Whitney is a wonderful heroine that you'll love. She's intelligent and ambitious, while also being compassionate and charitable. She is the perfect match for Archer, the hardened dark hero who so fascinates her.
I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel, So Still the Night, because Kim Lenox's books are not to be missed!
Night Falls Darkly: A Novel of the Shadow Guard OverviewA new voice in paranormal romance... A brand-new chilling saga.... The Doctor and the Diva: A Novel ReviewTHE DOCTOR AND THE DIVA is Adrienne McDonnell's debut novel and in this reader's opinion, it is a very successful one. The book centers around an extremely talented woman, Erika Myrick, her wealthy and business-minded husband, Peter, and a successful obstetrician, Dr. Ravell. Erika and Peter have been trying to get pregnant for many years, but without any success. By the time they consult Dr. Ravell, Erika has given up any desire she may have had to become a mother and has resolved to finally go to Italy and pursue her dream of becoming an opera singer. Peter is almost desperate that his wife become pregnant, due to both his longing for a child and his need to bind Erika to him in what he assumes will be an irrevocable manner. Ravell is caught in the middle, torn between wanting to give the Myricks the child they've been hoping for, see Erika fulfill her dream, and do what he can to keep her near him. A spontaneous decision by one of these characters acts as a catalyst for all that follows, as their competing desires inexorably push them down a path of unintended consequences. This book explores the strange dynamic that emerges between a married couple and their doctor and how each of their choices and actions impact their own lives, as well as one another's.
McDonnell used her husband's family history as inspiration for this book: his great-grandmother left her husband and young son to pursue a singing career in Italy. The author says she felt conflicted about the idea of a woman abandoning her family for the sake of her art: "Did I admire her and want to applaud her courage? Or was it heartbreaking that she'd deserted her little boy?" (from the author's website). These conflicting emotions are at the root of the story and McDonnell does a superb job of arousing the same opposing feelings in the reader and leaving us torn between these two reactions.
The book spans the years 1903 to 1914 and travels between the privileged neighborhoods of Boston, a boat in the Atlantic Ocean, a coconut plantation in Trinidad, the jungles of Guiana, and the streets and opera houses of Italy. An added bonus is the fascinating information McDonnell provides about fertility and gynecology in the early 1900s. As she points out in her historical note at the end of the novel, many practices that are seen today as "modern" and "groundbreaking" are actually neither. Consider this: the first recorded case of successful artificial insemination was performed in 1785 by Scottish surgeon John Hunter!! Also interesting was the novel's exploration of the complex and intimate relationship that developed between male obstetricians and their (obviously female) patients, whose bodies they knew and understood in ways that often neither the women themselves, nor their husbands, did.
McDonnell's writing is both simple and rich; there is a softly poetic quality to it and every word and sentence seems to have been carefully chosen and crafted. The story and characters truly come to life within the book's pages and I couldn't help but feel myself emotionally involved and implicated as I read it. I am someone who cannot usually tolerate anything having to do with adultery - even if it's a completely fictional novel or film - so the fact that McDonnell had me feeling so engaged was both a surprise and a testament to her talent as a storyteller. The complex love triangle that makes up this story drew me in almost from the beginning (if it can be called that, because this "love triangle" doesn't really follow any type of normal pattern).
Although a lot of changes and life events take place, in the end it's a character-driven story and Erika, Peter, and Ravell are written well enough to pull it off. They are complex, interesting, passionate, and imperfect people. They are not always likable and sometimes their actions or decisions leave the reader feeling anger, dismay, repulsion, and/or pity. The three of them seem propelled down a murky path that you can't envision engendering anything but heartbreak and tragedy; it's almost like a car crash you can't look away from, however it's much, much subtler than that and often feels almost anti-climactic. All three are vividly portrayed and in the end these two men and one woman are much like real people: neither wholly good/right, nor wholly bad/wrong. Instead, they are essentially human, and we come to feel an affection and sympathy for them, however unwilling it may be at times.
The book is written in third-person, but all three have sections written from their point of view; this was something I appreciated as it gave me a degree of access to and insight into all of them. One thing I will note is that we never know Dr. Ravell's first name - he remains throughout either "Dr. Ravell," or "Ravell" to his friends. I only started to take note of this a little ways into the book, so although it's possible I missed this somewhere in the first few chapters, I know that that's the case for almost the entire book. This is interesting given the fact that Erika and Peter become "Erika" and "Peter" towards the beginning and are referred to as such from then on by the narrator and the other two main characters. Also, whenever Ravell and Erika are together without Peter, the story was always told from Erika's point of view. These may seem like minor things, but they shaped the tone of the story, albeit in subtle ways.
I only have a few specific criticisms. The character of Christopher, a young American accompanist who becomes much a part of Erika's life in the second half of the novel, pretty much disappears at the end and we don't know what happens to him - or his two friends. I also felt that when Erika finds out (a very important/shocking) something, her reaction was not at all what I would have expected; it was appropriate for about three lines and then she seems to almost completely dismiss the entire event. I think more could have - and definitely should have - been made out of this, especially considering the various things it puts in motion and the consequences it ends up having for all three characters. Finally, parts of the ending were a little too pat for me. Not everything is tied up with a neat little bow - how could it be?! - but the conclusion nonetheless seems to fall a little short; we thought we were slowly climbing to some jarring result or eye-opening hard truth, and instead we're thrown a loud side twist, while the central story is then quietly laid down at our feet. The "loud side twist" could have really worked if it had been altered a little and used to end the overall story. This would have left us with a very tragic ending, à la Anita Shreve, but it would have been an appropriate one and would have worked in a literary sense.
In conclusion, THE DOCTOR AND THE DIVA was an enjoyable read - an engaging novel centering around three original, compelling, and flawed characters. I would definitely recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction, opera enthusiasts, and most female readers. Additionally, it abounds with issues that could stimulate wonderful group discussion, so I think it would be a *superb* book club selection (especially if it's a coed book club - could lead to some very interesting conversations!).
[This review is of an advanced copy format of the book]
RECOMMENDATION: This novel reminded me very much of Catherine Texier's Victorine, an extremely wonderful book (4.5 stars) that I finished in one day, if I remember correctly. This novel also centers around a mysterious and intriguing woman from the author's ancestors and explores her struggle between responsibility and family duty, and her pursuit of passion and independence. In the case of VICTORINE, Texier's great-grandmother is the featured heroine - a French woman living at the end of the 19th century who leaves her husband and children to go to Indochina with her lover. The Doctor and the Diva: A Novel Overview

Hazardous Duty (Squeaky Clean Mysteries, No. 1) ReviewGabby St. Clair wants to be a CSI specialist. She's always loved science and mystery. Family trouble demanded her time and she didn't finish college. Now, she's given up her dream so she can clean up after murders, assaults and the occasional cat lady.
But with her inclination toward crime solving, Gabby can't help but notice some things don't add up at the site of a murder. And when she takes her suspicion to the police, she's met with incompetence or maybe it's a cover-up. And then a bomb shows up on her doorstep. She's definitely making someone nervous.
Hazardous Duty switches pace from comedy to spine tingling suspense with quick deft skill. Barritt has a great cast of odd-ball characters backing up her heroine: a way-too-cute new neighbor who stacks up to be a bum like Gabby's dad; a vegan who is willing to give a pro-animal speech at the least provocation; and a cop who looks like Brad Pitt and who might be trying to kill Gabby.
Hazardous Duty by Christy Barritt as much fun as I've had reading a book in a while. I feel like Christian fiction, which I love and write, has just turned a corner with this book. It's as funny and fast paced as any book, created with Christian readers in mind with no offensive language or situations--unless picking skull fragments out of a wall offends you--which is possible. It's pure entertainment with a Christian worldview. - Debbie W. Wilson, [...]Hazardous Duty (Squeaky Clean Mysteries, No. 1) OverviewA forensic scientist wannabe becomes a remarkable crime solver in this CSI-type mystery. Guaranteed fiction! (20070108)

She Walks in Beauty ReviewAfter reading a HOST of mediocre Christian Fiction, Siri Mitchell has once again given me hope in the genre. After a litter of amish and pioneer subjects - Siri does not disappoint when it comes to historical fiction. And once more, her characters are multi-dimensional and interesting! They are not boring and predictable. Oh, Siri I could just HUG you for this book! Thank you!
Clara is a bright, intelligent woman who dreams of going to Vassar College. She lives with her wealthy, but distant and somewhat mysterious father and prickly aunt - an ambitious and socially-driven woman who is determined to help her niece marry the "catch of the ton" - Franklin de Vries. Clara is socially-anxious and is constantly concerned with what she should do and say. A welcome relief to her circle is Harold de Vries, the congenial younger brother. Her lifelong friend, Lizzie, is also a lifeline to her in this foreign land of intrigues and alterior motives.
The supporting characters are just as interesting! How did her father really earn his fortune? Were the de Vries really responsible for ruining the Carter fortune decades ago? Is a marriage between Franklin and Clara for revenge?
My ONLY regret is that I finished this book in one day and now there is no more! Siri Mitchell is a breath of fresh air in Christian Fiction. These characters are fresh, the storyline is unique and ingenuitive. And Siri is a genius. Do yourself a favor. Buy DON'T BORROW this book. You'll want to read it again. She Walks in Beauty Overview

The Feasting Season ReviewNancy Coons has a real talent for writing so vivid you can practically smell the scents she describes and taste the flavors about which she writes. Even after only five minutes with the book I wanted to go out and have a good meal. It's very obvious that Coons is a food writer and that she knows her subject intimately. It's refreshing to read something in which food is presented as something to be enjoyed, a pleasure to be relished, and cooking is made art by her writing. The book is certainly worth a read for that alone.
On the downside, I never really could understand what drove Meg to marry Nigel in the first place. He's borderline mentally abusive, patronizing her and treating her like she's a child, refusing to take her work seriously, and disregarding her every protest against his monstrous plans to demolish part of their historic farmhouse in favor of creating a hideous glasshouse. That alone made me despise the character. In all seriousness, though, Meg's marriage is not a good one and her reasons for having entered into it are very unclear to me. I found myself frustrated with her every time her husband marginalized her and, far worse yet, their children. He's not only a poor husband, he's a poor father who stays out till all hours and takes advantage of his wife's research travels to party like a single guy while his kids are at home with their far too patient nanny.
The relationship between Meg and Jean-Jacques is sensually written but I found him rather frustrating as well. He expects Meg to tell him everything and yet he does his best to keep his past from her. I'm not sure I felt that he was really a better match for her than Nigel as he is also given to patronizing her and refusing to take her seriously. Even after their relationship deepens, he still seems to take delight in mocking Meg's eagerness to pursue the historical angle of the book they're writing. He ignores her input and pretty much does what he wants with it. Still, he is kinder to her than her husband and he does seem to have more of an appreciation for her.
Overall, the writing is lush and this book is a very good read. It would have been truly extraordinary if Meg would have come into her own more. I thought she spent too much time being everything for everyone else and not enough time just being herself. I wanted her to grow a backbone, to really go after the things she wanted, to make the men in her life take her seriously or disregard them altogether.
In spite of my disappointment with the characters, the descriptions of Meg's and Jean-Jacques's travels, of the places they visited and the foods they ate, was nothing short of spectacular. More than anything, this book is something of a love letter to France itself, to its history and culture and, especially, its food and wine. Considering the beating France has taken in the U.S. in recent times, it was lovely to read a positive novel about France, one in which the people are human and not so very different from the people in the U.S.The Feasting Season Overview

Her Fearful Symmetry: A Novel ReviewAfter The Time Traveler's Wife (TTTW), this book has been much anticipated by so many, including myself.
That puts a lot of pressure on the author as well as the reader. I had to begin the book with an open mind to read it as a stand alone and not a 'follow-up' to The Times Traveler's Wife.
The story begins with the untimely death of Elspeth who leaves behind her lover, Robert. Robert has an apartment (flat) in the same building as Elspeth and is devastated by her death. Elspeth leaves her London flat to her nieces (twins living in the United States) under the condition that their mother (Elspeth's twin, Edie) never steps foot in the flat. This begs the question of what could have happened between the two sisters (Elspeth and Edie) to cause such tension and need for control. The 20 year-old twins, full of quirky thoughts and behaviors, move to London and Robert, intrigued and haunted by their resemblance to Elspeth, stalks them for awhile before eventually meeting up with them during a tour he was giving at Highgate Cemetery. The story really develops with the reemergence of Elspeth as a broody ghost, destined to stay in her flat watching over and desperately trying to communicate with her nieces as they begin their new lives in London.
As I began this book, I was immediately caught up in Ms. Niffenegger's wonderful ability to create characters that become amazingly real right from the start. She has an uncanny way of creating relationships built on such a deep love that we yearn to be involved with those in our own lives with the same depth of feeling.
The story begins beautifully (and sad), the concept is wonderful and the characters are richly developed. Ms. Niffenegger tells the story in a unique way and leaves mysteries and unanswered questions for readers to want to continue.
The writing is excellent, there are a variety of characters to love or at least be intrigued with. The scenery is well developed and the inclusion of Highgate Cemetery (and much of its history) makes for a fascinating setting. I think it is because most of the story is set in London that Ms. Niffenegger has chosen to use British spelling throughout the book. It is not a distraction though. As someone whose family is from England, there were many references to places, stores, and food items, that were familiar to me but may not be to others. I don't think these references will confuse the reader but for me, it was like going home for awhile.
One of the characters, Martin, has severe OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and won't even leave his flat. Ms. Niffenegger must have done a lot of research to create this character so realistically. She does a great job developing a believable (albeit extreme) relationship between the twins - both sets - who are the main characters.
As with TTTW, there were moments that I felt uneasy, events that were a little out line with the flow of the story and the personality of the characters. There were things that happened that I just couldn't see going that way (or maybe didn't want to go in that direction). Unfortunately, these events, conversations, or actions, occasionally got in the way of the story. I'm sure Ms. Niffenegger understands her characters better than I do but when they are developed so richly, we feel we know them.
The story is very creative and unique but takes some turns in the second half that detract from the beauty of the storytelling. It was worth finishing but left me a little unsettled.
Overall, Ms. Niffenegger is a wonderful and original storyteller. She has a great ability to build characters in depth and create relationships deep with emotion. She has researched all aspects of her story well. This book is worth reading, but before reading, set aside any great hope of surpassing TTTW.
As an added note, if I think of books I would give a 4 star rating, this is probably a better book but in comparison to her first novel, it is not a 5 star book. It puts the reviewer in a difficult position - to rate compared to other books, or expectations. Her Fearful Symmetry: A Novel Overview

The Persistent Suitor ReviewArchibald Brainridge (Archie) has been summoned by his godfather, the Earl of Chandos, to make an appearance in London. Archie wonders what the old curmudgeon wants, as the man disinherited him and sent him away years ago, after an issue at Oxford. What he finds is that the Earl now wants to make a couple of deals with him. If he stays away from gambling for a year, then he will get an allowance, and if he finds a woman to marry him, then he will become the sole heir of the Earl. Archie knows the first part will be easy as he has left his gaming ways behind him, just not the debts. He is now the bailiff for his father's estate and has found a passion in farming and farm planning. He knows the perfect person for part two. He thinks to ask Isabella Cox, his neighbor and long-time friend, to be his bride.
He, unfortunately, is so nervous about asking her that he goes out and gets drunk first. Bella is stunned that she appears to have sunk so low that even a friend has to get drunk to ask her to marry him.
Isabella is determined to never marry a gambler. In fact, she has resigned herself to having to live the life as a lady's companion, as her father gambled her dowry away. So she writes her aunt to ask if she is either in need of a companion or knows of someone who is, especially since her aunt is just getting over the death of her uncle. When she arrives in London, Isabella finds that her aunt takes her on as her project. She wants her to have a season, and will help her with a dowry to make a match; she won't stand for Bella becoming a companion.
The problem that both Bella and Archie face is that just as she turns him down, and he sobers up, they both find they love each other. Will Bella be able to trust Archie not to gamble and take a chance on love?
The Persistent Suitor is a wonderful regency historical romance. This is the first story I have read by this author and it won't be my last. She has woven the stories of a number of characters into this novel, and I was pulled into each one. There might be just more than one persistent suitor in this story. I like how Archie was shown to not only grow up, but to appreciate others and how they might feel by his actions and the actions of others. If you love regency or Victorian historicals, then I think you will find The Persistent Suitor a wonderful addition to your book shelf.

Before I Fall ReviewFriday, February 12th should be just another average day for popular, beautiful Samantha Kingston. But it's far from it--her ride home after a late-night party ends in a car accident, only when Sam wakes up, it's Friday, February 12th again. Forced to re-live the last day of her life seven times, Sam struggles to understand the meaning behind these experiences and the significance in her own life and actions. Because only when she can get her last day exactly right will she ever be able to take the next step.

With keen insights and startling candidness, Lauren Oliver's debut novel is a frank, if not at times brutal look at high school social circles and the careless cruelties and bullying that occurs on a daily basis. Sam is one of the mean girls, and she shrugs off her biting words and actions as something that just happens, collateral damage of living through high school. But through every complex and carefully plotted event, Oliver peels back the layers of Sam's life and teaches us all that every little deed has a consequence, and no act goes unnoticed. Though Sam is by no means a likable character at the beginning of the novel, as her character is revealed and she learns a thing or two about the things she has done in her life and the person she has become, she morphs into a true, selfless, and caring heroine, despite her many flaws. The story line is addicting and suspenseful. and as each "day" passes and Sam begins to get things right, the question that has been looming in the back of your mind since the end of the first chapter--What will happen to Sam?--becomes more and more urgent. Oliver is skillful at wielding suspense and heartbreak, making you think hard about the value of your own life and actions.

Before I Fall is a haunting and beautiful book. It will float around at the back of your mind long after you've read it.Before I Fall Overview

Forgiven ReviewKula Baker has always lived on the edge of danger with an outlaw for a father. But now that she's grown, she's ready to go out into the world and make a respectable life for herself, where hopefully she'll catch the eye of a rich young man who will marry her. But when her father refuses to leave outlawing, saying that he has one last piece of business to take care of, Kula is forced to go alone...only to witness her father being arrested for a murder he didn't commit. Kula travels to San Francisco, hoping to find a man named Ty Wong and a mysterious box that will save her father...and ends up discovering long-buried secrets about her father she never expected.

Forgiven is a fast-paced and unique historical novel, with a strong and noble protagonist. Kula is headstrong and determined to save her father, but a little naive in her methods. After a life slightly outside of the law, she's certain that marriage will give her the kind of respectability and security she craves. However, she is in for a few surprises as her romantic interests don't always go the way she plans and she falls for a Chinese man. Their romance seems a little rushed, but it is sweet and complements the more dangerous aspects of the novel as Kula searches for her father's box and in doing so, stumbles upon the darker side of turn of the century San Francisco with its human trafficking of female Chinese immigrants. That aspect, while horrifying, was a fascinating bit of history that Fox didn't expound upon nearly enough. The book ends with the great earthquake that shook the city in 1906, which hurriedly forced the book to conclude realistically, but slightly unsatisfactorily. Forgiven is a book that contains an interesting, complicated narrator and some fascinating historical tidbits, but as a whole seemed a little disjointed. The companion novel, Faithful, was a much better read.Forgiven OverviewKula Baker never expected to find herself on the streets of San Francisco, alone but for a letter of introduction. Though she has come to the city to save her father from a cruel fate, Kula soon finds herself swept up in a world of art and elegance - a world she hardly dared dream of back in Montana, where she was no more than the daughter of an outlaw. And then there is the handsome David Wong, whose smiling eyes and soft-spoken manner have an uncanny way of breaking through Kula's carefully crafted reserve. Yet when disaster strikes and the wreckage threatens all she holds dear, Kula realizes that only by unlocking her heart can she begin to carve a new future for herself.

Somerset (Volume 1) ReviewFirst off, I love historical romance novels, I just do. Which is why the idea of Chloe Spencer going back in time to meet the man she sees in a painting, with a face she cannot forget, appeals to me. Chloe inherits this manor house in England, leaves her cozy North Carolina home to see what she should do with this home. When she arrives, she is in awe of the beauty and magic of this place. She sees the portrait of a man who once lived there, 200 years before, and cannot stop thinking about him. She trys to find out anything she can about this man in the painting. When she wakes up one morning, she finds herself in his bed...200 years back!
Somerset has some steamy romance scenes that will get your heart rate going as well as twists and turns, and mystery too. A great book full of very real characters, some charming, some not so charming. If you like historical romance with a twist, definitley get this book!
Somerset (Volume 1) OverviewChloe Spencer was enjoying a quiet life in North Carolina, until the phone rang. After learning she had inherited an old and mysterious English mansion, she quickly hopped a plane to Somerset, and began the most bizarre journey of her life. Smitten and obsessed with a portrait in the mansion's library, Chloe soon discovers the man in the painting was murdered nearly two centuries earlier. Somehow transported back in time to within days of his demise, she must convince the untrusting, yet irresistible Brandon of what lies ahead for him, all the while wondering if she will ever make it back home or if she is bound forever to a life she had never dreamed of.

Ever After ReviewFor many years my favorite of the Williamsburg Novels (I even named my only son after the main character!) "Ever After" is a delectible evocation of late Victorian life in America and England. One of the blessed qualities of the writing of Elswyth Thane is that she can take each character of each generation of her families and make them vivid, alive, humanly recognizable, and -- most amazing feat of all -- DIFFERENT! Dinah Campion is no more Tibby Mawes than Bracken Murray is St. John Sprague, and all Thane's heroines, from Tibby to Eden to Virginia and beyond have their own decidedly varied personalities. Less war-oriented than her first two novels, "Ever After" tells the story of loves delayed (as loves and lives always are) by the interruption of violence into well-ordered lives. With her usual deft pen Thane not only reconstructs turn-of-the-century Williamsburg for us, but turns her talents to late 19th century New York and England as well. More than any other of her books, I think, this one depicts exquisitely the settings where her characters live and function: the fascinating city that was New York in the Gay 90s -- early vaudeville with its colorful characters, fashionable Park Avenue where the very rich dressed and partied and lived in isolated splendor, the seamier side of existence where vices of every kind could make the frightened sister of a tawdry vaudeville suicide expect to have to pay back the men who rescue her in the "usual" way. And Thane's beloved England sparkles through her eyes, not only in its upper-class, fox-hunting, tweed-wearing, manifiestations, but in the lonely lives led by the ignored and repressed offspring of the rich and elite. Through Thane's skill as a story-teller and the window she seems to possess into the human soul, what might be a completely unbelievable tale of love at first sight becomes an entirely comprehensible exercise in passion and self-restraint. Music fills this book, literally and figuratively, and the Spanish-American War, when it erupts into these sophisticated and civilized pages, takes us away from that music only momentarily. The disputes and disagreements of war are not the main conflicts in this novel; love postponed, love seemingly impossible, love triumphant are the themes, and Thane lifts us out of ourselves and into the hearts of her characters with all the skill of a conjuror. A honey of a book, and a dilly of a portrait!Ever After OverviewIn Ever After, Bracken Murray visits London duing the Jubilee summer of 1897 after his wife deserts him. Here he falls in love with an English girl. Meanwhile back in the USA his cousin Fitz rescues a music-hall singer who f alls in love with him. Sacrament ReviewWell, Ms. Squires 2nd book, although very different from her first one, is a great read. I had some issues with the story, but all in all, thought that it was very well written. I find that her imagination and ability to tell a story is exceptionally skilled. To start, her characters are deep, well defined and interesting. No cardboard cut outs in this story. Julian is cynical, dark, aloof and detached from the world. We feel his ennui, and learn to see why he is the way he is (if you've lived as long as he has, I suppose that is reason enough, but Ms Squires brings you into his mind to see this). Sarah also has her own issues. We see her grow and mature as the story progresses. She is a strong character, though not perfect. Sarah has weaknesses and a touch of naiveté that she needs to overcome and accept.
The vampire element is new and fresh and interesting to read (again, I comment upon Ms. Squires imagination). Here comes that "but"; but there were two elements that left me uncomfortable with the book. First and foremost is Sarah's friend Corina. There is a symbiotic relationship in the first half of the book, which skirts the realm of reasonableness to me. This relationship is explained (and fairly satisfactorily) but Corina was SO dark it jerked me out of the story a time or two. The second element is the pace of the story. It felt like we had 2 or 3 different stories in one. Maybe a division of Part 1 and Part 2 would have helped, but so much happens in this story (all of which is important to the main love story) that I felt my mind wandering at times. Either the book needed to be an epic (another 200 pages to expound upon important issues) or maybe two different books?
Well, enough negative commentary. I really did enjoy the story and the characters. I was riveted to the book, unable to put it down until I finished it. I am eagerly awaiting her next book!Sacrament Overview
It began in Sienna, with an illicit kiss stolen under a hot Mediterranean sun.

It made the blood sing in her veins, burn in her body in ways--in places--that she had never felt before. It was a pulsing need to be someone else; to be something else, something she didn't yet understand.

It was embodied by Davinoff. The dark lord was the epitome of beauty, of strength. He was feared by the ton, and even by fleeing to Bath, Sarah could not escape him. His eyes were ageless, held a sadness she could hardly fathom. They pierced her, struck so deep that she felt penetrated to her very core. What they offered was frightening and tantalizing. Was it evil that lurked within this foreigner's unnatural kiss, or was the communion he offered something else entirely? All Sarah knew was that the sacrament of his love would either be the death of her body or the salvation of her soul. And she could no more deny it than she could herself.

The Bridegrooms ReviewI will start by saying that I was quite pleased with the way the story ended. Based on that alone, I almost gave the book a higher rating! But, I found this book slow to really get going. It wasn't a chore to read, but it didn't have me wanting to read more until I got to the last half or third (it's hard to know when I got sucked in) of the book. In short: It took me FIVE DAYS to read this book. If a book really grabs me, I will finish in half that time - if not less.
The characters were OK. Vada was mostly likable, but I was really wanting her to put Lisette in her place a few times. I couldn't believe the rudeness and abuse she took from her! Hazel was sweet, and I was really hoping that Althea would say something by book's end.
One big plus was that the Christianity in the book was very natural. No preachy religion, which I greatly appreciate. Overall, it was an enjoyable read! I would recommend it to fans of Christian fiction. The Bridegrooms OverviewIt Only Takes an Instant for Love to Strike Tragedy hits the Allenhouse family on a hot summer night in Ohio when a mother of four vanished. Eight-year-old Vada virtually grew up overnight and raised her three younger sisters while her father lost himself in his medical practice in the basement of their home. Now, Vada is a grown woman, still making her home with her father and sisters. Her days are spent serving as an errand girl for Cleveland's fledgling amateur orchestra; her evenings with Garrison Walker, her devoted, if passionless, beau. Dizzying change occurs the day the Brooklyn Bridegrooms come to town to play the Cleveland Spiders and a line drive wallops the head of a spectator. The fan is whisked to the Allenhouse parlor, and questions swirl about the anonymous, unconscious man. Suddenly, the subdued house is filled with visitors, from a flirtatious, would-be sports writer to the Bridegrooms' handsome star hitter to the guilt-ridden ballplayer who should have caught the stray shot. The medical case brings Dr. Allenhouse a frustration and helplessness he hasn't felt since his wife's disappearance. Vada's sisters are giddy at the bevy of possible suitors. And Vada's life is awakened amid the super-charged atmosphere of romantic opportunity.

Her Scandalous Marriage Review
This is the first book by LL that I have read. I sought her and a handful of other authors out that I have never read before. I'm always looking for the diamond in the rough. Most of the time, the authors are passable but, not noteworthy. LL is definitely a keeper. I am buying some more of her books and hoping others are as good as "Her Scandalous Marriage" ended up being.
The reason I enjoyed this book so much is that there was passion, attraction and seduction but, unlike many books where the couples get together early and the interest wears off....this author was really talented in keeping the plot line going even after the main characters had been intimate many times. Many authors go from innocence to frankly dark and dirty passion much too quickly with characters. And...they have them doing it so often you actually get bored reading about it. In this book, the author did a good job of having suspense and sexual desire and attraction build and because circumstance wouldn't allow it...often they had to tease but, refrain from being together. Thus...the attraction built to a fine level. When they did get together, it was tastefully written, appealing, light and the intensity was just right. Nothing too deep, exotic or dark. The main characters of Drayton and Caroline were not only attractive and beautiful but, definitely funny, quirky and loveable. They were well rounded and easy to bring to life. Authors often make the male lead one way and the female another (either strong and arrogant for the man and simple and naïve for the woman, etc). LL did a fine job of making Drayton and Caroline into real world characters that had blemishes from their past and mistakes along the way but, they were likeable for all their human weaknesses. And...as they got together, all their best qualities continued to shine and they continued to blossom into warm and appealing lead characters.
Their world was complex and complete with the additions of Caroline's half sisters of Fiona and Simone, Drayton's friends of Aubrey and Haywood and the many employee's at the estates who loved them - one and all. It was a charming group thrown together kicking and screaming by an old man's dying wishes but, fortunately, his unwanted wishes ended up giving them a family and deep love they never expected.
One reviewer said it was boring, hard to read, easy to skim the end and couldn't wait for it to be done. Everyone has their opinion but, if you are looking for more than a sex book, or a book light on romance, than this is the book for you. This book was truly the story of two people who were doing fine on their own and meeting up and realizing that what they thought they wanted was not what they wanted at all. They thought marrying for money to keep their titles and estates in line was what should and had to be done. They didn't think they could give it to happiness, joy and love as that's simply not done in the world of a Duke and a Duchess. Fortunately, they found a way to eventually defy convention.
Together, they found friendship, laughter, joy, a family and eternal love. It was sexy, funny, interesting and appealing. All the emotions were also realistic and you could feel for what they were going through. Their thoughts and actions never felt empty and contrived, instead, it was heartfelt and real. All the internal dialogues each character had in their heads when something happened was a riot - very funny to read (like when Aubrey's mother gave society lessons to Caroline). Especially sassy Simone. Characters that are life like and likeable are not easy to create in one dimension on flat paper or a computer screen. This author brought Caroline and Drayton and the whole gang to life. I am hoping to read a story about Haywood or Aubrey (to redeem these two stuffy and naughty fellas) or even Fiona (gentle, shy and with a limp) and Simone's (sassy, strong and independent) stories one day when they grow up.
This was a great book if you are a true lover of historical romance novels. Add this author and this story to your favorites - it's great! Four stars for sure!

The Sonnet Lover: A Novel Review
Every once in a great while along comes a book that I don't want to finish, simply because of the letdown when it ends. There's so much enjoyment in the reading - lush and evocative descriptions, graceful prose, characters that spring to life from black printed lines, undercurrents of mystery, an imaginary bridge between today and years long past, plus romance. So much to savor! In Carol Goodman's hands there is often the deft turn of a phrase, a telling detail capturing both eye and mind. Or, one finds a described scene more vivid than a painting.
An extraordinarily capable writer, this author blended all of the above into one remarkable book - The Sonnet Lover.

The bare bones of the plot: Rose Asher is a literary professor at New York's fictional Hudson College. As she notes, "The most thankless job on the planet may well be teaching Renaissance love poetry to a group of hormone-dazed adolescents." Nevertheless, there are other perks - she is involved in a love affair with Mark Abrams, the college president, and she has a star pupil - Robin Weiss who has written a prize winning film.
Sadly Robin's potential is not to be fulfilled as he falls to his death from a balcony following the interruption of a college party. Was it an accident, was he pushed?
To try to answer these questions Rose agrees to return to La Civetta, a Tuscan estate near Florence which has been loaned to Hudson College as a teaching institution. She joins Mark, other faculty members, and possible producers of a film who believe that Robin may have discovered a sonnet written by Shakespeare's mysterious Dark Lady. This is quite a cast - from Mark who begins to act strangely to Mara, the wife of the head of the film department, an always acquisitive buyer who finds the beauty of Tuscany in Hermes scarves.
Waiting at La Civetta is Bruno Brunelli, the first and greatest love of Rose's life. Waiting with him is his wife.
As said earlier, these are the "bare bones" of the plot. The reading pleasure is found in the way Goodman puts flesh on these bones. Sonnets woven throughout are by the author's husband, Lee Slonimsky. Granted, a pivotal meeting Rose "chances" to overhear in the church of Santa Margherita and the denouement do seem a bit contrived. But an author who writes as engagingly as Goodman is forgiven all.
As one who has never entered a bookstore she didn't love the overflow of books at our house falls into three categories: donations to libraries, loaners, and keepers.
The Sonnet Lover is most definitely a keeper!
