Jet Set Desolate ReviewAndrea Lambert's debut novel, Jet Set Desolate, tells the story of Lena Cosentino, a twentysomething mired in the alluring and terrifying world of early-2000s San Francisco, where sex and cocaine flow freely and, on the surface at least, little else seems important.
Lambert weaves a gnarled spiderweb of drugs, lust, and excess; a devastating portrait of a young woman struggling to maintain an image of consummate glamour while slipping into utter abjection. Jet Set Desolate is smut with style, prurience with pith. For underneath the tangle of limbs and bags of powder, it is plain to see that Lena is, at her core, simply searching for a connection more meaningful than the one she has with her dealer. This is at times difficult to see beneath the veneer of disco balls and lines of coke; however, Lena is tougher than she appears. Although she is repeatedly debased and degraded, Lena demonstrates a base, animal will to survive. As the novel frenetically races toward its brutal conclusion, it is the reader who will be left clawing for more.Jet Set Desolate OverviewA dive into post-millennial San Francisco, where electroclash cuts lines with the burgeoning dot-com bubble, and Lena falls for Jesse, a street-walking cheetah with a heart full of need.Follow the sores beneath the sequins, food stamps and semen, the broken milieu of a youth smashed between utter excess and utter loss.

Persephone's Agent ReviewSpjut's first novel is remarkable. Well paced, beautifully written the book elides two very different worlds - of real estate in San Francisco and of Greek gods and their myths. Yet this pairing doesn't grate. It may be the elegance of the writing, or the compelling narrative, but it's convincing and hard to put down. It's also informative. Effortlessly we learn details of the beautiful gingerbread Victorians that fill the city, and of the stories of the Greek gods that come to visit it. Moral and philosophical questions weave their way through the book elegantly - what do we believe and why, and how can we be sure? And what can we take as of proof? Persephone's Agent is truely a wonderful novel.Persephone's Agent OverviewIn a few, short months a young, stunningly beautiful real estate agent's life veers into mythology, occult and the paranormal. Shockingly she learns from a newspaper that her lawyer husband hacked into another law firm's computer, stole documents to seduce a woman, and was axed for his offense. Once divorced, a nothing-down real estate investment pops up, with a curious hook: She must buy with an acquaintance who declares she is the Greek goddess Persephone sent to Earth on the singular mission of persuading the agent to believe she is who she says she is. The agent cannot resist. She becomes entangled in an extortionate law suit with her tenants who refuse to vacate the flat she buys to live in and has to share Persephone's. And she falls uncontrollably for a man who flatters she is more beautiful than Helen of Troy, who proclaims he is none other than the Titan Prometheus and has orchestrated the recent occurrences in her life, who tenders as proof of his divinity and manipulation a few good miracles or illusions - she cannot tell which - and a chilling, intimate account of her current woes, and who offers her immortality in exchange for her believing Persephone.Fascinated, charmed, infatuated and entrapped by the two putative gods whom her best friend counsels to dismiss as cult figures, she must choose between two versions of these life-changing events, one based on reason and the other on faith.

Forgiven ReviewKula Baker has always lived on the edge of danger with an outlaw for a father. But now that she's grown, she's ready to go out into the world and make a respectable life for herself, where hopefully she'll catch the eye of a rich young man who will marry her. But when her father refuses to leave outlawing, saying that he has one last piece of business to take care of, Kula is forced to go alone...only to witness her father being arrested for a murder he didn't commit. Kula travels to San Francisco, hoping to find a man named Ty Wong and a mysterious box that will save her father...and ends up discovering long-buried secrets about her father she never expected.

Forgiven is a fast-paced and unique historical novel, with a strong and noble protagonist. Kula is headstrong and determined to save her father, but a little naive in her methods. After a life slightly outside of the law, she's certain that marriage will give her the kind of respectability and security she craves. However, she is in for a few surprises as her romantic interests don't always go the way she plans and she falls for a Chinese man. Their romance seems a little rushed, but it is sweet and complements the more dangerous aspects of the novel as Kula searches for her father's box and in doing so, stumbles upon the darker side of turn of the century San Francisco with its human trafficking of female Chinese immigrants. That aspect, while horrifying, was a fascinating bit of history that Fox didn't expound upon nearly enough. The book ends with the great earthquake that shook the city in 1906, which hurriedly forced the book to conclude realistically, but slightly unsatisfactorily. Forgiven is a book that contains an interesting, complicated narrator and some fascinating historical tidbits, but as a whole seemed a little disjointed. The companion novel, Faithful, was a much better read.Forgiven OverviewKula Baker never expected to find herself on the streets of San Francisco, alone but for a letter of introduction. Though she has come to the city to save her father from a cruel fate, Kula soon finds herself swept up in a world of art and elegance - a world she hardly dared dream of back in Montana, where she was no more than the daughter of an outlaw. And then there is the handsome David Wong, whose smiling eyes and soft-spoken manner have an uncanny way of breaking through Kula's carefully crafted reserve. Yet when disaster strikes and the wreckage threatens all she holds dear, Kula realizes that only by unlocking her heart can she begin to carve a new future for herself.
