At the Firefly Gate ReviewSometimes good things really do come in small packages. Linda Newbery's "At the Firefly Gate" is a gem of a 152-page novel for the Middle Grade reader.
"At the Firefly Gate" weaves together two stories set some fifty years apart with the help of one ghost, some visions, and an elderly neighbor. The contemporary story begins when sixth-form student, Henry, moves from London to Suffolk: "3, Church Cottages, Crickford St. Thomas, Suffolk, was the sort of address Henry's mum had always wanted."
Henry doesn't share this dream, however, and to add insult to injury his parents moved before the last week of school. To help him make friends over the summer, they force Henry to spend time with his prickly next door neighbor, Grace. Grace is a year older than Henry and wants little to do with him. Fortunately, her great aunt Dottie takes an instant liking to Henry and makes him feel at home.
On his first evening in Suffolk, Henry catches sight of a man standing by the gate at the end of Henry's garden, staring up at him. The man is smoking and surrounded by fireflies. Soon Henry is dreaming from the point of view of this man, the dreams taking him back fifty years to a war-time food stand and a pretty girl with bright blue eyes.
Newbery brings the present and past together beautifully in "At the Firefly Gate." The ghost story never seems contrived--the present and past overlap neatly in Henry's new village life. I also appreciated that Henry, albeit momentarily freaked out by the changes in his life, is more curious than frightened by his glimpse into the past. Henry takes his challenges as they come, be they real world (Grace, new school, new friends) or ghostly.
"At the Firefly Gate" is a stunner--a book I'll be pushing on everyone I know older than eight years old.

The Secrets of Droon Special Edition #8: Final Quest ReviewBeing the 44th overall book, 8th special edition volume and final book of the Secrets of Droon series, starting with The Hidden Stairs and the Magic Carpet (Secrets of Droon #1), "The Final Quest" presents a conclusion to the epic started 11 years ago. I started the series when it first came out and loved it immediately. I originally I loved it for its fun plot, characters and premise. It is for these reasons and more that this series has retained my interest and loyalty throughout the 11 years. Abbot's strict adherence to stories with happy endings stay true no matter how dire the situation Droon is in. In the battle of good verse evil that this book and the entire Secret of Droon Series, the good guys always win the day(although not necessarily the book) and the bad guys lose but don't get killed. Tony Abbot knows his audience well enough to know that a truly satisfying conclusion of the series wouldn't end with children saving the day and then saying goodbye to Droon and their childhood alike. Though the book presents a fitting and poignant end to an amazing series, it leaves the reader knowing that though this is the final quest they will read of Droon but the adventures will continue for the character. Abbot even presents a whole new plot line through the book that is testament to the enduring secrets of Droon. This book is a must read for anyone who has read any of the other books of the series or has a love for childhood innocence despite the age.The Secrets of Droon Special Edition #8: Final Quest OverviewAn immortal dragon.A long hidden secret. The kingdom of Droon is at the brink of war. . .
The situation in Droon has never been more desperate. The wizard Galen is missing. Eric has been forced undercover with Gethwing, the all-powerful Moon Dragon. And millions of beasts are assembling outside Jaffa City, ready to attack Droon's capital.
Eric, Keeah, Neal, and Julie will do whatever it takes to save their beloved kingdom. But to defeat the Moon Dragon, they'll need to uncover the greatest secret in all of Droon. . . .

Knock Three Times (Wordsworth Classics) ReviewI agree with the previous reviewer. This is the best children's book I know and I am a retired third grade teacher. It is the story of two children who enter another world through a tree. They have some scary adventures there involving an evil gray pumpkin. I have an old xeroxed copy from my grandmother's attic and every year I read it aloud to my spellbound students. The last few pages are missing from my copy so I asked the children to create their own endings. I wish that someone would reissue this book so everyone could have access to it at a reasonable price.Knock Three Times (Wordsworth Classics) OverviewMolly is desperately disappointed when, instead of the longed-for silver bangle, her Aunt Phoebe sends her a small, grey, pumpkin-shaped pincushion for her birthday. But at night, when the full moon shines, the pumpkin turns out to be a magical one. It leads Molly and her twin brother Jack into a strange land and an extraordinary quest which is by turns thrilling, chilling and hair-raising. This eerie tale of high adventure has an enduring appeal to all who love to have their blood deliciously curdled.

Barnaby Grimes: Return of the Emerald Skull ReviewBarnaby Grimes's city is home to many private schools for children. Some are pleasant and reputable, but others take parents' money and lock their kids in, housing them in horrible conditions until they are shut down or the children violently rebel. When Barnaby, a tick-tock lad (or clerk errant), delivers a message to the headmaster at Grassington Hall School, he finds the students happy and healthy and the staff well-meaning. But a later visit to that very same school ends in bloodshed and disaster.
RETURN OF THE EMERALD SKULL is the second installment in Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell's Barnaby Grimes series. Like the first, CURSE OF THE NIGHT WOLF, this novel is dark and gothic, a scary tale richly illustrated. Barnaby not only has a high adventure, but alludes to many he has had in the past. He doesn't seek out danger, but it finds him nonetheless.
Headmaster Archimedes Barnett sends Barnaby to the docks to pick up his latest acquisition, a stuffed bird called the catincatapetl, or emerald messenger of darkness. As he approaches the docks in search of the ship that brought the bird from its native jungle habitat, a deep and ominous fog rolls in. Barnaby finds the ship, but it seems ghostly and deserted, and he later discovers the crew has disappeared. Still, he delivers the package to Barnett and spends the rest of his summer studying an ancient and esoteric art called yinchido with a beautiful young Chinese woman. Mei Ling teaches him much and captivates him, but before he can finish his lessons, he learns that all is not well at Grassington Hall and that it has turned into a dreaded "lock-up academy." The students have gone wild, hunting animals and eating them raw, and abusing the faculty and staff. Can Barnaby stop them from committing a heinous human sacrifice?
Barnaby, a young man of indeterminable age, is brave, dashing, handsome and clever, and is the perfect guide through the chaotic unnamed city. Through a maze of streets to the wharf and highstacking over the roofs back to the richer parts of town, he knows the shortcuts and the people, the truths and the legends about the place in which he lives. He deals swiftly and easily with threats but always tries to avoid serious violence. He is cool and kind, a romantic realist, and his escapades are sure to thrill readers. Stewart's prose and Riddell's pictures are perfectly paired (the duo are also the creators of The Edge Chronicles).
Since Barnaby faces real terror and threats, this short book is not for very young or sensitive readers. There is less character development here than in the first book, making this one a bit flatter, but Barnaby Grimes is still a compelling and mysterious figure, and hopefully more will be revealed about him as the series progresses. What the book lacks in character development or plausible action, it more than makes up for in thrills and originality.
--- Reviewed by Sarah Rachel EgelmanBarnaby Grimes: Return of the Emerald Skull OverviewBarnaby Grimes isa tick-tock lad, running errands in his city, day and night, and high-stacking around the rooftops in search of new mysteries to solve. This is a fantastic romp through a Dickensian-style city, with a wonderful new hero in the guise of Barnaby. After collecting a strange parcel from a deserted ship in the fog of the docks, and delivering it to the local schoolmaster, Barnaby thinks he's earned a moment to sit on the rooftops and eat his favorite pastry. But soon he realizes that all is not well at the school—but is the problem quite as he expects it? A gruesome tale of a school overrun by a terrible curse—who will survive?Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell are the creators of the bestselling Edge Chronicles series and the Far-Flung Adventures.

Arabel and Mortimer ReviewArabel and Mortimer is a book written by Joan Aiken and illustrated by Quentin Blake. The first chapter of this book is called Mortimer's Tie. It's about this bird who doesn't like to go anywhere without his dark green tie. Mortimer is Arabel's pet raven. Arabel's parents Mr. and Mrs.Jones had just gotten a brand new car. Arabel was watching Chris wash her dad's new car. Mortimer, who was always getting into trouble was studying a waterhose very hard. Mortimer got his foot stuck in the waterhose and got himself all tangeld up in it. He was pecking and pekcing. He poked many holes in the waterhose. One time, Mortimer, who loved to dig in cracks of cars was digging in Arabel's father's car when he found a ring. It belonged to Lady Dunnage. She had a parrot named Isabella. Isabella was a very proper parrot she had all of her feathers brushed back and she looked beautiful. Miss Dunnage asked Mr. and Mrs.Jones, "Would you like to go on a cruise with me?" So, the whole family went on a cruise.
Arabel and Mortimer OverviewIn this silly sequel to Arabel's Raven, Mortimer floats out to sea on a grand piano, tries to get even with three giraffes that have stolen his doughnuts at the zoo, and takes off with King Arthur's sword. Will Arabel ever be able to control her troublemaking pet raven?

The Lyonesse Book 1: The Well Between the Worlds ReviewThis is the story of a boy who was raised in a fishing town with a loving family. He was your average twelve-year-old who liked adventures and playing with friends after school.
Little did he know that this current adventure had just begun. With a twist of events, this young boy was fighting for his life and finding out things about himself that put him and everyone that knew him in more danger than ever before.
I greatly enjoyed this book. At times it lacked detail and became hard to follow, but overall it was a great book.
It shows the real side of humans. Some are out to help people and others are there to only help themselves. It is a nice change to your classic 'monster' story or King Arthur tale. Many books have the same theme and you can predict what is going to happen way before it does. With THE WELL BETWEEN THE WORLDS, though, it is another story.
The plot is different from anything I have ever read and I loved it. It was also unpredictable for the most part. There are times where I was sure that I knew what the main character was going to do but was surprisingly wrong and a new twist unfolded. I could not put the book down because I wanted to know what was going to happen next and what this young boy was going to do.
I can't wait for the next book in the LYONESSE series to come out so I can discover where this young hero's journey veers off to next.

The Fledgling (Hall Family Chronicles, Book 4) ReviewThis book is so fantastic. It has all the qualities I consider appealing to non-committal fantasy readers. A young girl searching for something, a goose prince, a magic present and some characters that oppose all that the main character does. Georgie is a young girl who is a little out of the loop of day to day life, seeing as how she lives near a place called Walden pond, this is no surprise. Georgie starts believing that she can fly and actually injures herself a couple of times. Truth be told she really can with her goose prince who seems to have been drawn to Georgie. There is an awful lady who lives next door. She plants shrubbery with thorns on them to keep children out of her yard. She has seen Georgie flying and opposes this very much. This story becomes a tumult between nature and man , childhood beliefs and adulthood notions. I would highly recommend this book to any age person. In the begiining of the book there is a quote from Thoureau's Walden to bring the natural connection to this book even closer. There is more here than meets the eye.The Fledgling (Hall Family Chronicles, Book 4) OverviewIf there's one thing Georgie Hall has always been, it's determined.
So when her stepcousins Eleanor and Eddy tell her that she can't fly, Georgie doesn't get discouraged -- she just tries harder She feels a peculiar lightness when she leaps from the top of the staircase, and is even more certain of her seemingly impossible ability when she jumps from the porch and soars to the rooftop before landing safely on the ground. And now that a mysterious Canada goose is visiting Georgie's window on a nightly basis, the Hall family begins to wonder just what Georgie is capable of....

Under the Serpent Sea (Secrets of Droon, 12) ReviewThis book takes place in a magical land called Droon. The three friends, Eric, Julie and Neal are on their 12th adventure in Droon, seeking Demether, the underwater queen of the ocean. She has a red jewel she stole from Lord Spar, called the red eye of dawn. This jewel has a spirit in it which is making her yellow. This book has inspired me, and I would think many other people, to make up their own stories, to think about their own adventures in other worlds. I did not think this book was the best book I had ever read, because it really did not have that much action.Under the Serpent Sea (Secrets of Droon, 12) OverviewA hidden door. A magical Staircase. The Isle of Mists (Secrets of Droon, 22) ReviewLord Sparr has finally done it. He finally collected the Three Powers of Droon, the Coiled Viper, the Red Eye of Dawn, and the Golden Wasp. Droon could not be in a worse situation. With the Three Powers, Lord Sparr is headed toward the Isle of Mists, a strange eerie island where he is trying to do a magic trick which will spell doom for all of Droon. Not to mention the fact that Sparr's evil stepfather Emperor Ko, who disappeared on the Isle of Mists, could still be alive and well on this island. This spells big trouble for Eric and the gang. Can they somehow outmuster Lord Sparr and save Droon?
This was one of my favorites in the series. Definitely quite entertaining with a few revelations. I definitely recommend parent to get their young children into this series. Its a great hook for young children and I agree a step up from The Magic Treehouse series. The Isle of Mists (Secrets of Droon, 22) OverviewWith nearly 2 million books in print, this Little Apple series is H-O-T, hot. The SECRET is out - DROON is the series that kids, parents, and teachers are talking about!

Evil Lord Sparr has collected all Three Powers, something he has been trying to do since the very first DROON adventure. Armed with the Coiled Viper, the Red Eye of Dawn, and the Golden Wasp, Sparr is ready to journey to the Isle of Mists - an eerie place of fog and darkness. Eric, Keeah, and the others are hot on his trail. But they are worried. The Isle of Mists is where Sparr's stepfather, Emperor Ko, mysteriously disappeared. Some even say that the evil ruler is still alive there.

Sparr plus the Three Powers plus Emperor Ko? For Eric and his friends, that's not a good equation....

The Secrets of Droon #13: The Mask of Maliban ReviewMove over Lord Sparr! There is a new bad guy in town and it just turns out to be Prince Maliban the ruler of turtle city called Tortu. Eric, Julie, Neal, and Keeah have a whole new set of problems to deal with now since Hob, the magic mask maker, has escaped from prison and is up to no good. To stop him, Eric, Julie, and Neal must travel to the city of Tortu and confront him and Prince Maliban. It just so happens that Hobs is crafting a new mask for Prince Maliban and the mask will give Maliban power over all of Droon. It definitely sounds like something Lord Sparr might do to take over Droon. And...doesn't it seem weird that Lord Sparr has disappeared?? Could he have secret connections to Prince Maliban or worse is he Prince Maliban himself?? Read this 13th Droon book to find out!!!
I loved this new Droon book. It has a lot of excitment like all Droon books have. Can't wait for 14! Comes out in January 2002!The Secrets of Droon #13: The Mask of Maliban OverviewMove over, Lord Sparr-there's a new bad guy in town. Prince Maliban is the creepy ruler of the Turtle City. And Maliban's mysterious mask maker, Hob is crafting an awesome new mask. The mask is very cool but very powerful. So Eric, Neal, and Julie have to make sure the mask doesn't fall into the wrong hands otherwise, it could mean serious trouble for Droon.

Tower of the Elf King (Secrets of Droon, 9) ReviewHappiness and joy descended upon our household when the most recent Droon installment arrived. While my son and I are avid consumers of serial chapter books, the Secrets of Droon remains our favorite. Fortunately, number 9, which introduces a huge plot twist, did not disappoint. For the first eight installments, the bold young adventurers from the upper world -- Eric, Julie, and Neal -- have teamed with the Junior Wizard, Princess Keeah of Droon, to reign in the evil aspirations of the dastardly Lord Sparr. In The Tower of the Elf King, however, Lord Sparr is notably absent, and our young friends confront a new, surprisingly complicated foe, Gryndl. In addition to Gryndl, plus some old friends (particularly Kahn, King of the Purple Lumpies -- long my son's favorite), our friends meet The Maker, whose inventions feature prominently in the story line. Experienced Droon readers will be pleased to learn more of the illusive, shape-shifting Queen Relna, at the same time remaining wary of Sparr's eventual return. Once again, it's refreshing that the author does not weigh down the narrative rehashing prior adventures, but, for this reason, it's probably best to begin with the first book in the series. Once your kids begin, it won't be long before they'll be joining us in anticipation of the tenth installment!Tower of the Elf King (Secrets of Droon, 9) OverviewSomebody has robbed the Lumpies' village! And it can't be Lord Sparr - because he has mysteriously disappeared. The rumor is that a terrible beast is behind the crime. So Eric, Julie and Neal setoff with Khan and Princess Keeah to find the creature. Instead they find a big Surprise!

The Secrets of Droon #34: In the City of Dreams ReviewWe bought this series for our 8 year old grandson. He would prefer to read these over playing video games and he loves his video games. That tells me this must be a great series for his age group. The Secrets of Droon #34: In the City of Dreams OverviewEric has been wounded during an epic battle with Ko and his beasts. Now, the young wizard lies in a coma, trapped in a dream-state halfway between fantasy and reality.
Desperate to find a cure, Neal, Julie, and Princess Keeah rush to Samarindo, a beautiful but dangerous city famous for its dark magic. But they are immediately attacked by a group of bandits. Can the friends track down the cure before it's too late?
