The Sin of Love ReviewFor anyone interested in the occult and ESP, this book is captivating and will keep you up all night to see what happens next.
I've read several of Ms. Macer-Story's works, and this is, in my opinion, the best.
I look forward to a sequel. The Sin of Love OverviewSet in the 1970's, "The Sin of Love" portrays, sometimes humorously, the relationship of people steeped in the intellectual preconceptions of U.S. Ivy League literature & social associations with the angels and demons of the "world of shadows" which underlies all human civilization.A universal "initiation" in all cultures is this meeting with the trans-human personae which participate in the development of a nexus of cosmic intelligence.

Night Falls Darkly: A Novel of the Shadow Guard ReviewWhat if there was more to the most famous serial killer in history than we ever imagined? What if it was 1888, and Jack the Ripper's atrocious crimes were about to usher in an unprecedented age of evil?
What if Archer, the gorgeous immortal hunter who came to slay him, found Jack as elusive as he was deadly, and what if the intrepid woman that Archer couldn't resist loving was about to become Jack's next target?
Kim Lenox's first story in the Shadow Guard series will leave you breathless. Night Falls Darkly is an amazingly smooth blend of history, romance, and supernatural suspense. Sensual, elegantly written, and very original, it contains cameos from historical characters that will delight you. The writing is so evocative, you will find yourself standing in elegant ballrooms and dark alleyways with these characters.
Elena Whitney is a wonderful heroine that you'll love. She's intelligent and ambitious, while also being compassionate and charitable. She is the perfect match for Archer, the hardened dark hero who so fascinates her.
I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel, So Still the Night, because Kim Lenox's books are not to be missed!

Sisters of Isis: Divine One - #2 ReviewIn the first book of the SISTERS OF ISIS series, Sisters of Isis: The Summoning (Sisters of Isis #1), we were introduced to Sudi, Dalila, and Meri, who had all discovered that they are descendants of the Egyptian Pharaohs and that each of them possess their own power. Sudi was trying to let the news sink in while also attempting to maintain the same life, getting a date with her crush, Scott, and trying to defeat the Cult of Anubis. Well, accomplishing one out of those three things isn't so bad.
Now it's time for Meri to tell her story. Meri's life was never that simple, what with having a mother who is a very respected politician and the press always following her every move. And discovering that she has special powers just makes things worse. At least she has Dalila and Sudi to keep her on her feet.
But Meri's life is just prone to problems. Turns out Sudi's crush, Scott, is beginning to be interested in Meri. Yet Meri isn't at all interested in Scott, since she can't get Abdel out of her mind. If only she didn't act like such a dork and mess things up whenever Abdel is around. Aside from that, Michelle, one of the popular girls at Meri's private school, has decided to make Meri her next target. And the newspapers are starting to catch Meri at her worst moments.
While trying to find solutions to these problems, it's up to Meri, Sudi, and Dalila to defeat Apep, their newest enemy. But is this just too much for Meri to handle?
As the second novel in the SISTERS OF ISIS series, Lynne Ewing takes readers deeper into this new world. Meri helps us understand that being well known has more disadvantages then advantages and having friends that can help and understands you will make it easy to resolve any problems. Fans of this series will be satisfied with DIVINE ONE and all that is has to offer.

Midnight Rain ReviewThis romantic thriller has just about everything you could ask for in an action packed story filled with suspense, intrigue, a broad brush stroke of the paranormal, and topped off with a great romance that makes it sizzle. Phoebe Rain had survived 8 years married to a sick psychopath. She evaded him for two years until the day he finally tracked her down showing up in her classroom to create total mayhem and killing two of her students before she was able to stop him. Struggling with the injuries she sustained from the gunshot that blew out most of her knee, Phoebe was ever vigilant just knowing that he still lived, even though he was still in the coma she'd put him in for the last two years. When threatening phone calls started, Phoebe didn't want to believe, but knew that the voice belonged to the twisted man who had vowed to never let her go.
Once before, Phoebe had ignored the warnings she'd heard from beyond and disaster had struck. She would not ignore the warnings again and when the apparition of a young girl appeared to her begging her to go and help her neighbor, Phoebe listened. At 3:00AM in the morning, she went and knocked on the door of her neighbor, Dr. Alan MacKerrie, to warn him of the danger. Extremely apprehensive of the warnings from a comparatively stranger, a young woman he'd lived next door to for two years, he found her story hard to believe except that he himself had received warnings from the same young child - and he knew that child to be his very own daughter who had died five years earlier.
Using an inventive plot the author pits these two wonderfully needy protagonists together to battle inexplicable threats from a psychopath killer lying thousands of miles away, in a coma, reportedly at death's door. Phoebe who hadn't dared to dream of a happy ending for herself, and Alan who had ceased to believe in living after the fiery death of his beloved daughter were drawn together by need and a mystical connection through his daughter's warnings. To put it bluntly, this was one heck of an absolutely riveting suspense/paranormal romance - totally AWESOME! Hello, Hollywood this could be a blockbuster! Frankly from Chapter 21 on I was having such an adrenaline rush, I could have jumped out of my skin for all the suspense and terror. BOTTOM LINE - This is superbly, fascinating ride of a suspense filled romantic thriller that culminates with a perfectly wonderful heart wrenching soggy tissue ending! Do yourselves a BIG favor and find this book for a FABULOUS read. --- Marilyn Rondeau, for www.allromancewriters.com ---
Midnight Rain OverviewPhoebe Rain's sadistic ex-husband lies in a coma a thousand miles away-a coma she put him the last time he tried to kill her. Yet Phoebe knows the voice on the other end of the line belongs to the twisted man who vowed he'd never let her get away. Panicked, she turns to her neighbor, Dr. Alan MacKerrie. Alan finds the story hard to believe himself, but now he, too, is receiving chilling, ghostly warnings of danger. Caught between icy terror and mounting passion for Alan, Phoebe knows there's no escape.

Bone Crossed (Mercy Thompson, Book 4) ReviewThe Fourth Installment in the Mercy Thompson series is a direct follow-up to Briggs well-written Iron Kissed (Mercy Thompson, Book 3). Mercy is still dealing with the many problems in her life and trying to recover from a horrific assault that was the climax of the previous book. The situation is ripe with opportunities for the author to wave a magic wand and make things all better, but Briggs doesn't and my respect for her writing climbs as a result.
Mercy is coping and dealing with her new role as the mate of the local Werewolf pack. She is still suffering side-effects of previous events, but that doesn't mean that she's giving up. Briggs does a great job of keeping the story moving, introducing the next elements of the story and mixing in how the recent changes in her life require Mercy to re-evaluate and adjust. It's wonderful because too many authors don't bother to address these issues. Many authors in this genre let change happen and everything magically work out with any real effort by the main character.
Life keeps giving us problems even when we might wish otherwise and Briggs doesn't let Mercy rest. New issues continue to creep into the story and past choices by supporting characters come back to haunt Mercy and her friends. It's neat to see an author who is willing to let the Main Character actually cope with the second and third order effects of having broken with tradition and made enemies in previous stories. It's not like Mercy is just on a non-stop wheel of pain, it's just that Briggs doesn't let her just skip through life without paying the bill for being the agent of change that she often has been.
The story is not terribly long and Briggs doesn't cover tons of new ground, but there is still plenty to absorb. Complications between inter-species conflicts remain a central theme of Mercy's life and her relationship challenges don't simply fade away. Again, this effort by Briggs to keep a certain ethic of reality enforcement really deserves high marks because it increases the level of realism in a genre not known for it. Briggs deserves a lot of credit for keeping both feet on the ground while leading us on another exciting chase through an Urban Fantasy world that is as well-developed as any I have read.Bone Crossed (Mercy Thompson, Book 4) Overview

The Ravencliff Bride ReviewWithout a doubt, Dawn Thompson's venture into the paranormal world should cause a big celebration for fans of this genre! With clean writing and a highly imaginative plot keeping you on the edge of your seat from first page to the last, this is a genuine treat and not to be missed!
Though she had been saved from debtor's prison and rescued out of the Fleet, by a fortuitous but unusual request for her hand in marriage; by proxy - from a man she'd never met; Sara knew she should be grateful. More than a bit anxious on the ride to meet her husband the new Baroness Walraven viewed a monstrous looking edifice bathed in darkness - Ravencliff. As she arrived at the front door of this ominous looking structure Sara could only think - she would finally meet the mysterious man who was her husband.
At first glance, Sara's imagination could never have conjured up the gorgeously attractive man that was Nicolas Walraven. Although she was certainly attracted, she could also tell from his burning eyes that he felt the same, so Sara found his `ground rules' of their marriage not only unusual but mystifying. The mystery of why he had plucked her out of prison, when he obviously could have had his pick of suitable brides was intensified. Told there would be no physical contact between them, Sara was more than willing to embrace the one living being that seemed to genuinely like her, the wolf-like dog Nero! When Nero saves her from being raped by Nicolas' childhood friend she is determined to keep Nero safe from the people who seem to want to see him gone - including her husband. It soon becomes apparent to Nicolas and his ever-present valet Mills, that Sara's attachment to Nero could get her killed or worse. Nicolas must now make a life altering decision, whether to trust and reveal his darkest secret knowing that it may lose him the woman he has come to love.
--- Impressive and moody, Thompson's book instantly intrigued me from the very beginning with dark tones and eerie imagery reminiscent of the great gothic novels penned by du Maurier and Holt. No doubt at all - this - is - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED reading offering the reader both a smorgasbord of emotions coupled with an absolute dream of a love story! The Ravencliff Bride Overview

Somerset (Volume 1) ReviewFirst off, I love historical romance novels, I just do. Which is why the idea of Chloe Spencer going back in time to meet the man she sees in a painting, with a face she cannot forget, appeals to me. Chloe inherits this manor house in England, leaves her cozy North Carolina home to see what she should do with this home. When she arrives, she is in awe of the beauty and magic of this place. She sees the portrait of a man who once lived there, 200 years before, and cannot stop thinking about him. She trys to find out anything she can about this man in the painting. When she wakes up one morning, she finds herself in his bed...200 years back!
Somerset has some steamy romance scenes that will get your heart rate going as well as twists and turns, and mystery too. A great book full of very real characters, some charming, some not so charming. If you like historical romance with a twist, definitley get this book!
Somerset (Volume 1) OverviewChloe Spencer was enjoying a quiet life in North Carolina, until the phone rang. After learning she had inherited an old and mysterious English mansion, she quickly hopped a plane to Somerset, and began the most bizarre journey of her life. Smitten and obsessed with a portrait in the mansion's library, Chloe soon discovers the man in the painting was murdered nearly two centuries earlier. Somehow transported back in time to within days of his demise, she must convince the untrusting, yet irresistible Brandon of what lies ahead for him, all the while wondering if she will ever make it back home or if she is bound forever to a life she had never dreamed of.

Sacrament ReviewWell, Ms. Squires 2nd book, although very different from her first one, is a great read. I had some issues with the story, but all in all, thought that it was very well written. I find that her imagination and ability to tell a story is exceptionally skilled. To start, her characters are deep, well defined and interesting. No cardboard cut outs in this story. Julian is cynical, dark, aloof and detached from the world. We feel his ennui, and learn to see why he is the way he is (if you've lived as long as he has, I suppose that is reason enough, but Ms Squires brings you into his mind to see this). Sarah also has her own issues. We see her grow and mature as the story progresses. She is a strong character, though not perfect. Sarah has weaknesses and a touch of naiveté that she needs to overcome and accept.
The vampire element is new and fresh and interesting to read (again, I comment upon Ms. Squires imagination). Here comes that "but"; but there were two elements that left me uncomfortable with the book. First and foremost is Sarah's friend Corina. There is a symbiotic relationship in the first half of the book, which skirts the realm of reasonableness to me. This relationship is explained (and fairly satisfactorily) but Corina was SO dark it jerked me out of the story a time or two. The second element is the pace of the story. It felt like we had 2 or 3 different stories in one. Maybe a division of Part 1 and Part 2 would have helped, but so much happens in this story (all of which is important to the main love story) that I felt my mind wandering at times. Either the book needed to be an epic (another 200 pages to expound upon important issues) or maybe two different books?
Well, enough negative commentary. I really did enjoy the story and the characters. I was riveted to the book, unable to put it down until I finished it. I am eagerly awaiting her next book!Sacrament Overview
It began in Sienna, with an illicit kiss stolen under a hot Mediterranean sun.

It made the blood sing in her veins, burn in her body in ways--in places--that she had never felt before. It was a pulsing need to be someone else; to be something else, something she didn't yet understand.

It was embodied by Davinoff. The dark lord was the epitome of beauty, of strength. He was feared by the ton, and even by fleeing to Bath, Sarah could not escape him. His eyes were ageless, held a sadness she could hardly fathom. They pierced her, struck so deep that she felt penetrated to her very core. What they offered was frightening and tantalizing. Was it evil that lurked within this foreigner's unnatural kiss, or was the communion he offered something else entirely? All Sarah knew was that the sacrament of his love would either be the death of her body or the salvation of her soul. And she could no more deny it than she could herself.

Flesh Circus (Jill Kismet, Hunter, Book 4) ReviewRun by evil hellbreed and their human Trader partners, the Cirque de Charnu (Circus of Flesh) uses flashy trappings and promises of pleasure to lure suicidal humans to their deaths ... or worse. Under an ancient agreement between the Cirque and the hunters -- humans who protect their fellows from supernatural evil -- there will be no interference with the Cirque as long as it only consumes those who come to it voluntarily. The Cirque guarantees its good behavior with a hostage whose life will be forfeit if the Cirque steps out of line.
The Cirque has returned to Santa Luz after an absence of nearly a century, and though hunter Jill Kismet is none too happy to receive it, she knows the rules. Sanctuary minder Galina remembers that something bad happened the last time the Cirque was in town, but she can't recall what it was or who was involved. When someone or something attacks the hostage, threatening to throw the Cirque into dangerous chaos, Jill is reluctantly forced to defend the Cirque and track down the attacker. At the same time, a rash of non-demonic possessions, zombie attacks, and gruesome murders alerts Jill that one or more practitioners of "voodoo" are running amok in her town. Could there be a connection between the events of the past, the voodoo of the present, and the attacks on the Cirque?
FLESH CIRCUS follows the same formula as the previous books in this series, mixing supernatural creatures, violent action, noirish private-eye cliches, gross-out humor, romantic tension, repetition (she describes her werecougar boyfriend Saul as Native American beefcake at least three times), and a bunch of seemingly unrelated narrative threads that get tied up in a neat little bow at the end. This novel improves on REDEMPTION ALLEY by being more coherent and more inventive. On the other hand, it does very little with the rich possibilities of a hell-tainted circus. Worse, the use of voodoo (and the interest of the loa--the non-demonic voodoo spirits) are entirely unmotivated; why voodoo and not, say, kabbalah or mundane old black magic? In the end, it's a typical book in the series, likely to appeal to anyone who enjoyed the earlier volumes.Flesh Circus (Jill Kismet, Hunter, Book 4) OverviewThe Cirque de Charnu has come. They will clean out the demons and the suicides, and move on. As long as they stay within the rules, Jill Kismet can't deny them entry. But she can watch--and if they step out of line, she'll send them packing. When Cirque performers start dying grotesquely, Kismet has to find out why, or the fragile truce won't hold and her entire city will become a carnival of horror. She also has to play the resident hellbreed power against the Cirque to keep them in line, and find out why ordinary people are needing exorcisms. And then there's the murdered voodoo practitioners, and the zombies. An ancient vengeance is about to be enacted. The Cirque is about to explode. And Jill Kismet is about to find out some games are played for keeps...

The Undead Next Door (Love at Stake, Book 4) ReviewSweet Heather Westfield has an adorable daughter, an overbearing ex-husband, a feisty nanny, and too many dreams that were never fulfilled. The talented designer/seamstress stayed in her small Texas town to appease her mother and became a school teacher instead of pursuing her ambition to be a fashion designer. When one of the world's top names in couture opens a boutique nearby, she is drawn to the life she gave up, and to the man who has designed fashions for some of Hollywood's biggest stars.
World-weary Jean-Luc Escharpe has seen it all since he was transformed into a vampire centuries ago. A skilled swordsman, he fought as a lieutenant-colonel in the vampire army, and in later decades, pursued his skills a businessman and designer. His career has kept him in the public eye a little too long, however, causing many to wonder how the designer who clad Marilyn Monroe and Cary Grant still looks so young and handsome. What he needs is some time away and a place to hide out. But on the eve of his self-imposed isolation, he meets a beautiful woman who has been burned by love. Heather awakens long-dead feelings in Jean-Luc and makes him start to wonder if he could have another chance at love after all.
But with a crazed killer bent on revenge tracking Jean-Luc's every move, being around him is not exactly the safest place in the world. Then there's the whole undead element thrown into the mix. Jean-Luc is certain a relationship with Heather would never work out because she could never accept him as he is. But Heather has some surprises up her homemade sleeves: she's declared a war on fear, and this Texas sweetie vows not to let anyone stand in the way of what she wants. And she wants Jean-Luc.
The Undead Next Door, Kerrelyn Sparks' fourth book in the Love At Stake series, is a thrilling, fast-paced detour through the beautiful Texas Hill Country with two wounded but strong souls. As usual, the story resonates with Sparks' trademark humor, wit, and warmth. There's something here for every reader as the author deftly combines history, humor, deep emotion, and paranormal elements for a deeply satisfying love story.
The Undead Next Door (Love at Stake, Book 4) Overview
Three signs that something is very different with your mew man:

1. He sleeps all day . . . which would be annoying except he's so attentive at night.

2. He's attacked by sword-wielding assailants, yet insists he can handle it on his own.

3. He never seems to age.

Heather Westfield has always lived a quiet life, but that all changes when she helps a very handsome, very mysterious stranger. There's something not quite right about Jean-Luc, but still, she's never been with a man so charming, so attractive . . . so wonderful. Now if only a murderous villain wasn't after them, they might get their happily-ever-after.

Need ReviewSince finishing Breaking Dawn, I have been in a reading funk. My post paranormal romance pout came from Edward/Bella withdrawl and the conviction the no one could outdo Meyer but Meyer...until Carrie Jones' Need. Need filled my "need" (sorry for the unavoidable pun) for a deliciously dark romance with edgy action and mind-blowing paranormal fantasy. In fact, Need edged out Twilight in some important ways.
Main character Zara, grieving from her father's recent death, shows much more character arc than Meyer's Bella. In this page-turner, Zara transforms from a withdrawn, morose girl to a Laura Croft-style monster-whipping machine. Instead of waiting to be rescued by her gorgeous alpha male boyfriend, Zara hunts her hunters, turning the tables on them through her own ingenuity. This was a refreshing change from Meyer's Bella who is a strong, yet passive, damsel in distress. It was a relief to see Bella finally break out in Breaking Dawn (darn- another pun) and fight back- even if it was in a defensive/shield creating capacity. In Jones' Need, we don't have to wait four books for evidence of our heroine's backbone. A more comparable character to Zara would be Holly Black's strong and sarcastic Val in Valiant.
Zara's love interest, Nick, is hot and amazingly, as might be appreciated by conservatives looking for an edgy book that doesn't go too far, a virgin! Their first kiss is hot and pure with Zara comparing the feel of Nick's lips to an angel's breath. It melted my heart and set it pounding. It is every bit as romantic as Twilight's heart-stopping Chapter 13 "Meadow Scene."
Like Twilight, the setting in Need is unusual and interesting. The weather is equally miserable, this time deep Northeast winter. The frigid cold is a stark contrast to the hot romance and action brewing in this backwoods mystery town. The secondary characters are better in Need than in Twilight- particulary Zara's friends. Her quirky band of outsider pals share banter that is laugh-out-loud funny, breaking up intense moments of darkness and angst.
I highly recommend this book to any like me who are grieving the finish of Twilight. Need is an antedote and a promise that the renaissance of paranormal romance is far from over.
