The Persistent Suitor ReviewArchibald Brainridge (Archie) has been summoned by his godfather, the Earl of Chandos, to make an appearance in London. Archie wonders what the old curmudgeon wants, as the man disinherited him and sent him away years ago, after an issue at Oxford. What he finds is that the Earl now wants to make a couple of deals with him. If he stays away from gambling for a year, then he will get an allowance, and if he finds a woman to marry him, then he will become the sole heir of the Earl. Archie knows the first part will be easy as he has left his gaming ways behind him, just not the debts. He is now the bailiff for his father's estate and has found a passion in farming and farm planning. He knows the perfect person for part two. He thinks to ask Isabella Cox, his neighbor and long-time friend, to be his bride.
He, unfortunately, is so nervous about asking her that he goes out and gets drunk first. Bella is stunned that she appears to have sunk so low that even a friend has to get drunk to ask her to marry him.
Isabella is determined to never marry a gambler. In fact, she has resigned herself to having to live the life as a lady's companion, as her father gambled her dowry away. So she writes her aunt to ask if she is either in need of a companion or knows of someone who is, especially since her aunt is just getting over the death of her uncle. When she arrives in London, Isabella finds that her aunt takes her on as her project. She wants her to have a season, and will help her with a dowry to make a match; she won't stand for Bella becoming a companion.
The problem that both Bella and Archie face is that just as she turns him down, and he sobers up, they both find they love each other. Will Bella be able to trust Archie not to gamble and take a chance on love?
The Persistent Suitor is a wonderful regency historical romance. This is the first story I have read by this author and it won't be my last. She has woven the stories of a number of characters into this novel, and I was pulled into each one. There might be just more than one persistent suitor in this story. I like how Archie was shown to not only grow up, but to appreciate others and how they might feel by his actions and the actions of others. If you love regency or Victorian historicals, then I think you will find The Persistent Suitor a wonderful addition to your book shelf.

The Wicked Duke Takes a Wife ReviewThis book was just plain bad. I'm someone who finishes a book, no matter how terrible I'm finding it. This book made me sorely wish that wasn't the case.
The plot was all but non-existent with very poorly manufactured drama, little to no sexual tension, and characters that I felt no connection to whatsoever. I didn't get any sense of a growing attraction--let alone a relationship--between the main characters. I don't mind my romances with a lust/love at first sight motif, but I didn't get that from this story either. It seemed like there wasn't really a story at all - just an idea that got a thumbs up from the publisher and then got dragged out for 300 or so pages by the author.
And the tie-in to "Frankenstein"? Unnecessary and nonsensical. I also didn't understand Griffin being described as "wicked" or "dark". Am I supposed to buy that he's comparable to Frankenstein's monster because he looks mean when people first meet him? Or because he wasn't married yet (though he's constantly described as a "young duke")? All I surmised was that the author loves "Frankenstein" and made up a way to shove it into her "book."
I could go on about how much I didn't like this book (what was with the weird line somewhere near the end that Griffin thought Harriet blamed him for her father's death when there wasn't anything before that would make us think he was connected to that at all-and then the idea was never considered again after it crosses the "hero's" mind... it bothered me that I didn't know either character's age... I assume Edlyn will get her own book at some point but she was just a weird plot device in this one... my agreement with another reviewer that it seemed absurd that the main characters didn't even have a conversation about the differences in their stations...), but I think my point comes across and I don't want to sink to the level of vitriol-spewing.
I guess I'll just close with the point that I really am glad to see the positive reviews for this book--there's something out there for everyone. The Devil's Love ReviewAfter reading all the books from authors like Judith McNaught and Julie Garwood in this genre, I thought I wouldn't find another author that could write like them. But oh, oh, oh, to my surprise Julia London is just as good!
This is the first book of Julia London that I've read and Devil's Love is totally scrumptious! The story of Michael and Abby is so delightful, so romantic, so heartbreaking and sooooo good. Abby is sunny, cheerful and adorable and Michael was quite the opposite in the beginning. But later Michael *sigh* turned out to be a wonderful, sexy and a totally fantastic hero!
The story line and build up was good and wonderfully written that YOU JUST WOULD NOT WANT TO PUT IT DOWN!
If you want to read romance you MUST read this 'coz this book will make you feel like you are the main characters! This book will take you back in time. This book will make you laugh out loud. In Your Arms Again ReviewNorth Sheffield, a former Bow Street Runner and now successful private investigator, is hired by Lord Spinton to find out who is sending unwanted letters of adoration to his intended. This plan will also allow North to see more of Octavia, as he is very much aware. As the two former friends spend more time together, the strong feelings from the past come to the surface and result in some very heated moments between North and Octavia. Yet both know they cannot continue the charade - it cannot go any further. But their feelings for one another cannot be denied further. They both realize that any possible future they may have is complicated by what each other brings to the relationship: Octavia's need to fulfill her obligations to family and societal expectations, and North's dangerous past in the criminal underbelly of London. Somehow, these obstacles need to be overcome before they can be truly together again.
Ms. Smith brings together a strong cast of characters in this novel, the second in the Ryland Brothers series. North is a dark and dangerous man, observing and protecting London's ton from the seedier aspects of the city. He has trapped away his feelings and emotions, as they are a weakness in his profession that only lead to trouble. Yet his feelings for Lady Octavia will not be held back any longer, and trouble is not far away. Octavia is a woman trying to do the right thing - even if it is the wrong thing for her. Ms. Smith is very astute in capturing the true societal norms of this period in history. Octavia's feelings of obligation, duty, and place were put upon every person in society from the poor to the elite. Yet it was often the women who bore the brunt of this burden. Reading this book and experiencing Octavia's journey through these emotions was heart wrenching at times but knowing that she finally makes the right decision for herself despite the penalties that ensue is pure bliss. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who wants to read a great story of getting a second chance - and taking it despite the risks.In Your Arms Again OverviewSince North Ryland and Octavia March were wrenched apart and their childhood friendship destroyed, much has changed. North has had a successful career as a Bow Street runner, and has made quite a name and fortune for himself. So much so that when Octavia's fiancé (for she is now engaged to one of the most desirable men of the town) needs to hire a man to investigate threats on Octavia's safety, he is the only man that will do.

The Lady Chosen (Bastion Club) ReviewThis was my first Stephanie Laurens book. Although I did like Ms. Lauren's clear writing style and evocative love scenes, I was a bit disappointed overall in both the story and the characters of the first of the Bastion Club Series, a premise I had high expectations about - seven bachelors negotiating the mine field of Regency London while looking for acceptable wives.
Actually, my expectations of reading about this Bastion Club provided my first disappointment. Something that I had looked forward to was the interaction between these seven gentlemen sworn to help each other in their individual quests to find wives, yet this episode's hero, Tristan Weymiss, never involved the Bastion Club in his pursuit of the strangely reluctant Leonora Carling. If not for the prologue where the entire situation was explained and set into motion, the Bastion Club and six of its seven members would have been completely ignored altogether.
The story, in a nutshell, involves Tristan Weymess, Earl of Trentham, who meets his lovely next door neighbor, Miss Leonora Carling, and finds himself drawn into the job of solving the riddle of mysterious burglaries that Leonora and her family have been experiencing. Naturally he finds himself attracted to the self-made spinster Leonora, who returns his attraction; indeed, enough so that she determines to seduce Tristan, or rather, allow him to seduce her. However, once the two lovers have consummated their relationship, Leonora strangely refuses Tristan's request for marriage, and he becomes the pursuer as she tries vainly to run from the bond that's developed between them.
Sadly, I found neither the hero or heroine to be very interesting. Leonora was supposed to be this independent women, yet nothing except her small attempts to solve the mystery herself showed me why this was to be so. She set out to seduce Tristan, and once she'd accomplished this goal, turned into a completely different character; cold, distant and spurning his pursuit to marry her.
As for Tristan, he simply did not stand out as a hero to take one's breath away. We are told on several occasions of the "possessiveness" he feels toward Leonora, but I never quite felt such to be the case. Except for his obvious fury after she is attacked, he really takes no steps that prove to me he has such a protective instinct. We learn very little about his inner workings, and he comes off as rather generic.
I felt as if this were actually two different books pieced into one. The beginning and ending appeared to be about an independent, somewhat reclusive spinster and the straightforward war hero who attempts to help her solve a mysterious burglary, seducing her in the meantime. Then, after finally making it into the bedroom, the two take their cat and mouse game into the ballrooms of the ton, and Leonora seems to become a completely different type of woman. A good portion of the book focuses on her refusal to marry Tristan for reasons that I expected to be sound and perhaps even shocking, only to discover are as bland as the character of Leonora herself.
Which leads me to Leonora's reluctance. For a woman bent on not marrying this nearly perfect man, her reasons, once explained, proved to me far too flimsy and transparent. Apparently, the death of her parents left her with the inability to trust or rely on anyone, and for that reason she felt unwilling to place her trust in a husband. However, nowhere in the story was any inkling given that the death of her parents had caused her undue distress, and once she internally admitted this reluctance to herself, the problem seemed to disappear. I felt like Leonora's refusal to marry was a very thin conflict set up to keep these two lovers apart when really there was no other reason at all.
The seduction of Leonora was done quite well if not somewhat formulaicly, with each interaction between the two would-be lovers jumping a carefully-measured fraction until the ultimate consummation. I liked that Leonora didn't play the coy virgin but rather admitted to her attraction and her desire to have Tristan "initiate" her into the pleasures between a man and a woman. Once she gave into his deal to prove that the attraction between them would not diminish but only increase, she very unashamedly enjoyed the physical aspect of their relationship.
The a-plot, or mystery about the burglaries, held no appeal to me whatsoever. Indeed, I found myself skimming the longer passages that dealt with this completely uncompelling plot which didn't even provide reason enough to inspire the supposed "possessiveness" Tristan felt for Leonora. I didn't care at all who was burglarizing Leonora's home and felt no compulsion for the mystery to be solved. Like Leonora's inner struggle with trust, the mystery felt more like an invented story crutch to throw these two together in the first place. I wondered quite frequently why there were no police officers involved in solving these attempted crimes.
I'm sad that I didn't like this book better because I don't know that I'll continue with the Bastion Club series. Maybe I need to try one of the Cynster books instead.The Lady Chosen (Bastion Club) Overview

A Rake's Vow (Cynster Novels) ReviewVane Cynster, Devil's cousin and closest friend, has his turn at meeting his match in this book. An enforced stay at his godmother's house brings him into contact with her niece, Patience Debbington, and a mystery: who is the magpie thief stealing all and sundry, and who is the Spectre who appears at night, in shadow, and appears to haunt the place? The primary suspect is Patience's young brother Gerrard, but Vane doesn't believe that for an instant. His godmother begs him to stay and sort it out, and as he is already very intrigued by Patience he agrees.
Patience is alarmed by Vane and does her best to avoid him; she's also worried about the effect he's having on Gerrard. ...
The plot of this book follows exactly the same direction as Devil's Bride. Vane - determined not to marry - encounters a woman and knows that he's met his fate. He wants to marry her. He proposes; she refuses him. He determines to persuade her through sensuality and at the same time find out why she won't marry him. And in the background there is a (not very interesting and pretty transparent) mystery plot - again, I'd worked out who was behind it pretty early on; ... Maybe Laurens wanted him to be seen as an idiot?
I found Vane's approach to Patience unconvincing; in one scene - when he'd just met her - he was aware that she had the power to attract him in a way no woman had before. And he was determined to resist that: he didn't *want* to marry. And yet barely a half-dozen pages later, with nothing having happened in the meantime, he was suddenly reconciled to his fate and determined to marry her. ...
And Patience's antipathy to Vane in the beginning was simply not explained until some way in the book. I can accept her stereotyping him as a certain type of man - and not being told what she meant by an `elegant gentleman' until almost halfway through the book did not help! - but we need to know *what* stereotype she's using, and why it bothers her. That took some time to convey.
Again, a lot of detailed sex scenes, which is fine if you like that kind of thing; they're too numerous and technical - as well as lengthy - for my preference. I prefer my lovemaking scenes to focus on the emotions rather than descriptions of sex organs. Of course the extent and locations of Vane and Patience's amorous encounters are all wrong for the period, and I'm not sure why Laurens seems to assume that engaged, or near-engaged, couples of the - quite Puritanic, remember! - Regency period would naturally have sex. This has come across in three of her books now; her heroes seem to make an automatic assumption that an engagement means free sex. ...
I do have the rest of the Cynster series and will keep reading - Laurens has a readable style, even if I do skim some scenes - but I do hope that she varies her plots for later books.A Rake's Vow (Cynster Novels) OverviewHe vowed he′d never marry.
