Sacrifice ReviewI was drawn to the book because of the setting: the Shetland Islands off of Scotland's far north coast. What drew me in was the chilling mystery of who the body in the peat was and why was she buried if she had only just given birth, and why was her heart ripped out?
The main protagonists is an unlikely heroine in Tora Hamilton an obstetrician who is obsessed with finding out who was the young lass who she found buried in her yard in the peat. But quickly the reader is thrown into a mystery that engulfs a mixture of ancient Norse legends that clash with the modern technology of criminology. But as our heroine keeps just one step ahead of death, her own, she quickly learns she can't trust anyone on the island including those closest to her.
There are a lot of twists and turns with just enough clues to help the reader but things may not be as they seem, which helps to make this one of the most chilling reads. The only downside is some of the UK terminology of the characters but it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the book. The pace is well done with only a few bumps in the road and the reader finds their self cheering Tora along the way to solve the mystery of the dead woman hoping that all she loses will be worth it. To realize this offering is from a debut author is equally exciting because we have a wonderful new author to look forward to.
This is a most unique find and should be read by those who like a strong mystery along with a sprinkling of Celtic/Nordic legends and aren't afraid to take a chance on a new author.Sacrifice Overview

Goodbye, Ms. Chips (Ellie Haskell Mysteries, No. 13) ReviewA word of warning: if you're looking for a cunning mystery novel full of plot twists and turns that keep you guessing till the very end, this isn't really the book for you. "Goodbye, Ms Chips" is an enjoyable, engrossing funny book -- but it really isn't the mystery read of the year.
Ellie Haskell's good friend, Dorcas Critchley, wants Ellie to turn her detecting skills towards discovering who has stolen the sports cup from the trophy case in the assembly hall of Ellie's old school, St. Roberta's. The trouble is that Ellie would much rather not to return to the very place where she really blotted her copy book by committing an act of great cowardice. But Dorcas (and he headmistress, Mrs. Battle) are afraid that news of the theft will tarnish the school's reputation, and rather hope that Ellie will take on the case and discover who stole the cup before news of the cups becomes public knowledge. Unable to resist Dorcas' entreaties, Ellie soon finds herself back at St. Roberta's, going undercover and emersing herself in boarding school life, sifting through the rumours, trying to figure out of the theft is a case of a prank gone wrong or if something more dire is underfoot...
Reading "Goodbye, Ms Chips" reminded me of all those English boarding school books I used to be addicted to as a child, Dorothy Haskell did a wonderful job of making this Ellie Haskell installment an entertaining and enjoyable salute to the genre. It is true that the "mystery" bit of this book took a while to get going, but the book was such a humorous and witty read that I didn't find that this was too much of a detraction. If I had any criticism of "Goodbye, Ms Chips" it was that it was not very well edited (and this is more a criticism of Ms Cannell's publishers than anything else), and that the ending was a little too rushed for my taste. "Goodbye, Ms Chips" may not be the mystery read of the year, but it certainly was a delightfully sharp and pleasurable read.Goodbye, Ms. Chips (Ellie Haskell Mysteries, No. 13) Overview

Urn Burial (Phryne Fisher Mysteries) ReviewPhryne Fisher is an enchanting young socialite who enjoys setting society in 1928 slightly on its ear. She drives a cool car, flies planes, is a crack shot, and shows up at house parties with her Chinese lover, scandalizing her hosts and fellow guests. And she is gorgeous and wealthy, too. Is it wrong to be jealous of a fictional character?
Urn Burial follows a typical theme for mysteries set in the 20's - a weekend party at a country house. So it is no big surprise when the river cuts the house off from the town and they are all trapped with a murderer. The cast of characters is also as expected with some old maids, a military man, young socialites and dashing young men. But this setup has some modern twists. I don't remember books written in the 20's having quite so much sex in them, for example. Not that this is a bad thing, just different. The attitudes and actions of the characters also have a touch of modernity to them - there are stronger roles for women and less social rigidity that probably existed at the time.
And did I mention that this book is set in Australia? Another interesting twist on the classic mystery. This book highlights and incorporates into the story some of the amazing natural wonders found all over Australia.
This book is a good read. The characters are good, the setting interesting, and the urn theme is bizarre and intriguing. There is some sex, some action, and a good ending. If the mystery is a little weaker than you might like, you don't notice much because it is all of a piece and enjoyable.

The Spring Cleaning Murders: An Ellie Haskell Mystery (Ellie Haskell Mysteries) ReviewThe opening of this entry is as funny as the opening to *The Thin Woman* [first in the series], which I recently reread. The rest of the book is delightful. One of the things that I like about this series is that Ellie is among the handful of female mystery solvers who is permitted to be happily married. I'm so glad that Ms. Cannell hasn't broken up said marriage or bumped off Ben. The end of the book made me wonder if Mrs. Cannell was thinking of Louisa May Alcott when she wrote it. The atmosphere reminded me of *Little Women*, the book that taught me that book friends are never lost. (You just turn the pages back to the beginning and your friend is alive again.) Then again, perhaps I felt that way because Vanessa's daughter, Rose, made me think of Ms. Alcott's Rose in *Eight Cousins* and *Rose in Bloom*. I look forward to my next stay at Merlin's Court. Ann Purser provides a delightful spin-off from her Lois Meade mysteries starring former series support player the silver haired crabby Ivy, her cousin, and their new friend. Fans will enjoy the dynamic trio as they investigate the murder of Gus' neighbor with zest and vim as they display energy that a person half their age will admire. With Gus adding enigmatic denouements, Deirdre a bit of fear, and Ivy vinegar of course, fans of the Meade English cozies will want to read this senior citizen murderer investigation.

The Book of Old Houses (Home Repair Is Homicide Mysteries) ReviewThis entry in the long running series finds Jake still in a quandry over the old book she found in the cellar of her Maine 'fixer upper'. And like the old house that never seems to be completed, I did not find that the story line was complete....convuluted, over busy, full of starts and stops, yes. Finished, certainly...Complete, no. I have been a big fan of Jake's stories from the first but this one falls flat. Maybe I still miss Victor! I have never been a fan of Ellie's (too contrived) or Wade's (off to the boat...go catch a murderer....see you later). In my opinion the storyline couldn't decide whether to develop into a straight who-dunit, branch out into a supernatural thriller, or just turn into a morality tale. (Bad guy corrupts weird kid in an quaint setting and they all wear aluminum foil hats forever). And poor Sam. PLEASE find him a purpose in life. Crawlspace: A Home Repair Is Homicide Mystery (Home Repair Is Homicide Mysteries) ReviewI am so disappointed in the direction the "Home Repair is Homicide" series has gone. This has always been a quirky and complex series, not what I would really classify as a cozy, but with the last couple of books, I feel like Sarah Graves wants to write a certain kind of stand alone thriller, yet can't let go of Jake and Ellie. And the totally weak and unnecessary subplot involving death threats to Jake- please- what a waste of time! As I mentioned in my review of her last book, "A Face in the Window," I read this series because I love the tidbits about small town Maine life, the adventures Jake has trying to renovate her house, and the relationships between Jake, Ellie and their respective families. In this book, I guess there is a decent storyline, but I feel like tiny bits of the characters are thrown in so she can call it part of the series.
