Goodbye, Ms. Chips (Ellie Haskell Mysteries, No. 13) ReviewA word of warning: if you're looking for a cunning mystery novel full of plot twists and turns that keep you guessing till the very end, this isn't really the book for you. "Goodbye, Ms Chips" is an enjoyable, engrossing funny book -- but it really isn't the mystery read of the year.
Ellie Haskell's good friend, Dorcas Critchley, wants Ellie to turn her detecting skills towards discovering who has stolen the sports cup from the trophy case in the assembly hall of Ellie's old school, St. Roberta's. The trouble is that Ellie would much rather not to return to the very place where she really blotted her copy book by committing an act of great cowardice. But Dorcas (and he headmistress, Mrs. Battle) are afraid that news of the theft will tarnish the school's reputation, and rather hope that Ellie will take on the case and discover who stole the cup before news of the cups becomes public knowledge. Unable to resist Dorcas' entreaties, Ellie soon finds herself back at St. Roberta's, going undercover and emersing herself in boarding school life, sifting through the rumours, trying to figure out of the theft is a case of a prank gone wrong or if something more dire is underfoot...
Reading "Goodbye, Ms Chips" reminded me of all those English boarding school books I used to be addicted to as a child, Dorothy Haskell did a wonderful job of making this Ellie Haskell installment an entertaining and enjoyable salute to the genre. It is true that the "mystery" bit of this book took a while to get going, but the book was such a humorous and witty read that I didn't find that this was too much of a detraction. If I had any criticism of "Goodbye, Ms Chips" it was that it was not very well edited (and this is more a criticism of Ms Cannell's publishers than anything else), and that the ending was a little too rushed for my taste. "Goodbye, Ms Chips" may not be the mystery read of the year, but it certainly was a delightfully sharp and pleasurable read.Goodbye, Ms. Chips (Ellie Haskell Mysteries, No. 13) Overview

After the Armistice Ball: A Dandy Gilver Murder Mystery ReviewReading "After the Armistice Ball" was almost like stepping back in time and a bit of a challenge. To begin with the author's, Catriona McPherson, style of writing was reminiscent of Nancy Mitford and E.F. Benson, with some (very) light Agatha Chrsitie-like touches thrown in. All this really takes getting uses to -- esp characters' tendency to pepper practically all their conversations with the word "darling." But once you get used to it, the book was quite the enjoyable read, full of atmosphere and colour, and fairly intriguing from beginning to end.
World War I is over, and the landed gentry is beginning to feel the pinch not only of the changing times and fashions, but also monetarily-wise. All except the Esslmonts, that is. Silas and Daisy Esslmont are enjoying all the comforts and luxury that owning the very distasteful and comercial enterprise of an insurance company can bring. That is until scandal rears its ugly head. Lena Duffy has discovered to her horror that the fabulous Duffy diamonds are fakes, and she's claiming that the switch must have taken place when she was visitng the Esslemonts during the Armistice Ball. She wants Silas to pay for stolen diamonds and because he won't (because the policy has lapsed) is conducting a whispering campaign about Silas' culpability and his lack of honour. At her wit's end about what to do, Daisy, Silas's wife, hires Dandy Gilver to find out what it is Lena really wants. Bored with life at the moment, Dandy readily agrees, especially since Daisy has offered her a fee to solve her problem for her. But the last thing Dandy expected when she agreed to act as go-between for Lena and the Esslemonts was to become involved in the suspicious death of a young giril she's rather fond of, or that trying to make heads or tails as to what's going on would bring her face to face with a very cold blooded killer...
Cationa McPherson has written a very absorbing debut novel. The prose style may take a little getting used to, and Dandy's tendency not to accept certain unpleasant home truths mainly because she cannot believe anyone of her set would behave that way can get a little grating, but that manner in which the author presents us with a strata of society that has had its time and that is struggling to come to grips with the change while valiantly plowing onwards, was fasincating. So that even though "After the Armistice Ball" was not very supenseful and lacked any telling plot twists and red herring suspects, it was a compelling read neonetheless. Reading of how Dandy gradually come to realise what's going on, and how she manages to solve the mystery was great fun -- I rather enjoyed the realistic manne in which the author presented us with how an amateur investigator would naturally blunder about while trying to solve her first case. A well written and enjoyable read, this is especially for readers who enjoy mysteries set in the 1920s and that is full of vibrant fun.After the Armistice Ball: A Dandy Gilver Murder Mystery Overview

Devotees of this series, of which I am definitely one, will enjoy M.C. Beaton's trademark humor and laugh-out-loud moments as James whisks Agatha away on a mystery vacation. With lacey lingerie, sexy dresses, and visions of romping on beaches and beds along the French Riviera, Agatha sets off with great expectations. When James' dream vacation turns out to be a run-down and very seedy hotel in Snoth-on-Sea, England, Agatha realizes the life she wants with James may never be possible. In a refreshing change of pace, the pursuer becomes the pursued and Agatha can see a future without James.
Once again her grouchy disposition and smart-aleck mouth lead to trouble, this time to the murder of a fellow guest at the hotel. When the brassy guest is strangled on the beach with Agatha's scarf, the police are eager to arrest the obnoxious Ms. Raisin. Agatha springs into action to solve the case and clear her name. As usual, there are myriads of minor characters, though Beaton has done a better-than-usual job of delineating each one for the reader. In addition to the staff from her detective agency, old favorites like Sir Charles Fraith, Mrs. Bloxby, Ron Silver, and Bill Wong return. Stolen jewelry, heavy drinking, and a raging sea figure prominently in this latest adventure. And in a classic moment, a Chinese waitress laughs at Agatha's name and tells her she might as well be called Mrs. Prune. The seventeenth adventure does not disappoint and leaves us with an unexpected, but totally Agatha-like cliffhanger.

The Telltale Turtle (The Pet Psychic Mysteries) ReviewI was thrilled to be asked to read this new work by two of my favorite authors, Joyce and Jim Lavene and I was in for a wonderful treat.
The main character of this charming mystery is Mary Catherine Roberts, a pet psychic. Yes, you read that correct, a middle-aged woman who actually communicates with animals. What a character. She is just about as likeable and colorful as a woman could be. I loved her.
A widow many times over, whose husbands all died in very strange ways, she has now settled in to her aunt's home, which she has turned the downstairs into an animal clinic. She does a daily show on the local radio answering questions for pet owners.
The problems began when her friend Taxi driver, Danny is driving her home one afternoon, and Mary hears an animal in distress and simply must find and rescue it. Unfortunately when they find Tommy, the turtle that was crying out to her, they also find a dead body. To top off the already outrageous situation, the dead woman is non other than the aunt of the radio station manager, Colin Jamison. The chips are about to fly as Mary tries to explain to Detective Angellus how she ended up in an apartment with a dead body. After all, how do you explain hearing a turtle calling for help?
I have to say this was one of the most enjoyable reads I have had the pleasure to review in a very long time. All of the characters that played in the story were extremely interesting, enjoyable and sometimes downright mysterious. And I am including the animals here as well. Everyone of them added just the right amount of sugar and spice to keep the story flowing.
As the story progress Colin's seemed to be the main suspect in the murder of his aunt, but after hearing from Tommy, Mary Catherine wasn't so sure of that fact. She somehow fell headlong into the investigation, unnerving poor Detective Angellus, and got herself into more trouble than she bargained for. As a matter of fact, she even finds a little romance along the way.
The interaction between her and different animals of what they might have possibly seen or head concerning the different happenings surrounding the murder was excellent. It was fresh and vibrant in a mystery read. Bravo.
I absolutely give this work my highest recommendation. I was actually sorry when it was over. I wanted to yell, "More, More!" In my humble opinion if you want a top-notch mystery, with characters both human and animal, that will keep you guessing who done it right to the end, this book is for you. I truly never guessed who the killer was, that is how well the author's hid their true murderous personality. Was it Colin Jamison? This is one superb read. If I could I would most definitely give it a standing ovation. Bravo Jim and Joyce. This truly is a winner.

Shrouds of Holly (A Special Pennyfoot Hotel Mystery) ReviewCecily Sinclair Baxter returns in Shrouds of Holly to solve another murder. Her previous Pennyfoot Hotel Mysteries are No Clue at the Inn and Slay Bells.
It's Christmas and Cecily and her employees are decorating the Pennyfoot ballroom for a festive Christmas reception. With a staff shortage (primarily due to illness) Baxter, Cecily's husband, has reluctantly accompanied Samuel, the stable manager, to collect fresh boughs of holly to complete the decorations.
While Mrs. Chubb, the Pennyfoot housekeeper, was out collecting eggs, the sleigh returned with a dead body (Gavin Hargrove) but minus Baxter and Samuel.
Samuel turns up with a head injury and his only memory is of bending over Baxter's body. Is Baxter badly injured or is he dead? The only thing known for sure is that he has disappeared.
With Baxter missing, the stable manager injured and a dead body outside her establishment, Cecily is determined to investigate. It's important to find the murderer but it's more important to find her husband.
The deceased Gavin Hargrove seems to have had some enemies. He owed money to a London syndicate for gambling debts. His fiancée doesn't seem very upset over his death. What's that about? And his brother is dependent on Gavin's goodwill. With Gavin dead, he inherits his father's wealth.
It's going to be a difficult task to find the murderer since the police think they know who killed Gavin but Cecily is not giving up. Her husband's life may depend on it.
Kingsbury's historical Christmas novels are set in England and are delightful cozy mysteries. I love the laid back feel of the books. They are satisfying plots that keep you turning the page.
