England's Thousand Best Houses ReviewThis is the second volume in what I hope is a long series of "England's Thousand Best..." and it does not disapoint. It is basically a listing of the thousand houses, all open to the public (though some more accessible than others), that Mr. Jenkins believes to be "the best" in England.
With each listing is a brief description, including an explanation of why Mr. Jenkins put the house on his list. These alone are worth reading, even if you cannot travel to each house, as some of the reasons might surprise you: they range from famous personages associated with the houses to interesting architectural details to important historical events.
If you are looking for a book that offers historical analysis about country houses or the wealthy, this is not it. It is, however, a very interesting travelogue that is essential to anyone who wishes to tour around England and would like to scratch deeper than the usual "Blenheim, Chatsworth, Knole" trifecta. It is also fun for anyone interested in trivia on the subject of architecture or English history, as it is full of anecdotes and facts that one does not usually hear.England's Thousand Best Houses OverviewNo visitor to Britain—past or present—should be without this glorious guidebook. Harbor Hill: Portrait of a House ReviewHarbor Hill was one of the most spectacular mansions ever built in America. Designed by the iconic Stanford White and built to embody the MacKays desire to accend to the pinacle of NYC society. This book charts the rise of the MacKays and their ultimate demise, along with the similar fate of this great house. The mistress of the house was a real peice of work, but this beautiful showplace was really her creation, she knew what she wanted and Stanford White gave it to her, with Mr. MacKay's money of course. The book is well researched and it's an interesting read and the images are first rate. Honestly, it's tragic that this house no longer survives, you just wonder what kind of philstine could tear something like this down, unfortunitely this being America and not Europe, none of us should be surprised it was so uncerimoniously destroyed. Harbor Hills fate closely resembles the great Philadelphia mansion, Whitehall, and the MacKays are more than a bit similiar to the Stotesbury's, both thought they built their great estates to last for centuries and instead they barely outlived them..when you see the kind of grand mansions built today in places like Bel Air and Palm Beach, you can't help but notice how inferior they are in comparison to the great Gilded Age mansions like Harbor Hill, it's a shame we dont have more respect for beautiful architecture of the past, we inherited so much from the Europeans, but that unfortunitely was not one of them...too bad for Harbor Hill, now just a ghost, haunting old sepia stained images.Harbor Hill: Portrait of a House Overview

Architectural Graphic Standards for Residential Construction (Ramsey/Sleeper Architectural Graphic Standards Series) ReviewAlthough these editions change little, this review is based upon AGS 10th Ed. & AGSRC 2003. Negative:
This is bascially a regurgitation of the more complete Architectural Graphics Standards, distilled to a "residential" focus but appears as volumous because some details have been photo-enlarged (in poor-average quality). Few, if any new residential details/information has been provided.
Positive:
Those ONLY interested in residential construction and NOT requiring a full brace of ALL details will find this quite a good value - compare its price to Architectural Graphics Standards.
Recommendation:
Anyone in construction should have one, but not both of these books as a prime resource. The content does improve every year, although some years it's like watching grass grow.
Challenge:
IF there are numerous portions of the Residential version that are unique and new to it, exclusive of passages in the larger AGS version - I would really appreciate a review that contains how to locate these passages, as I've spent enough time trying to find them. Architectural Graphic Standards, 11th Edition ReviewThe new version of Architectural Graphic Standards is an impossible book to use. It reflects a component approach to putting a building together instead of looking at the totality of a building. The Eleventh Edition omits basic information, for example, like the exhaustive catalogue of material and electrical symbols found in previous additions. The book now has an attitude that follows the mantra of the American Institute of Architects with regard to issues like sustainability and visitability. Any architect with a conscience incorporates these values into actual practice, so to have whole sections on these subjects is like preaching to the converted. The book is really an editorial snow job on the profession. The metal plate on the front cover is truly pretentious while the pages inside have been physically downgraded to an almost tissue-like quality.
By changing the format of the book so radically from the previous organization (without any kind of cross referencing) of the construction divisions that guided the profession for decades, looking for information is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
If, as a practicing architect with 30 years experience, I find the book problematic then I would not even want to fathom how a young practitioner could wade through this disorganized, inadequate mess. If Ramsey and Sleeper, the original authors, saw this book today I think they would be rolling in their graves.Architectural Graphic Standards, 11th Edition Overview

Eco House Book ReviewToo often, books on green building hector their readers, or at best, pay a little lip service to environmental issues while pushing products. Not so "Eco House Book," by Terence Conran, who has written yet another sensible work that should help homeowners to think carefully about their living spaces.
Conran identifies and explains what we're seeing, moving from a house built to survive the wind on a desert mesa in New Mexico, to a home in Chicago designed to capture natural light to an off-the-grid home in Oregon and to a home in Sweden that is entirely unpainted but still well-insulated and warm, and plenty of other structures along the way.
Each of the 17 homes illustrates a point in a given category: services (energy and heating, for example), basic fabric, meaning windows, floors, etc., design, outdoor spaces and maintenance. Photos and text flow together, taking readers on an architectural and design tour of the many possibilities, given the landscape and weather of where the home is located and the preferences of their owners.
Though many of the homes shown here are in the United States, this is very much a British book, but that shouldn't get in the way of Americans looking to build a green life. The terms may differ; the cause and value do not.
Intelligence, not preaching, reigns in this pages, and readers are left with a sense of empowerment, knowing that they too, with some thought, can live healthier lives and yet not sacrifice beauty or practicality in the process.

It is a relatively quick read, which is good for busy people - you won't be able to put it down.
Anthony Doerr recognized a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, that happened to come along at a most inopportune time, and grabbed it. On the day his twin sons were born, Mr. Doerr received notification that he had received a grant to study or work at pretty much whatever he wanted for a year in Rome. Luckily his wife Shauna also must have recognized the necessity of grabbing this chance while it was available, and so they packed up their babies and traveled from Boise to Rome. Lucky for us, he decided to spend part of his time constructing this memoir.
After reading Doerr's elegant, evocative prose, it's easy to see why the powers-that-be decided that his gift should be nurtured. He is just as awed by the adventure of raising his children as by the experience of living in Rome. Unlike other books in this very broad genre of expat memoir, Doerr does not focus on the quirks and foibles of the Italians. Rather, he describes his own little circle of family, friends and acquaintances and frequently lapses into long lyrical musings on historical events, nature, or whatever happens to strike his fancy. "The Biggest Funeral in the History of the World," aka the funeral of Pope John Paul II, is not treated as a gigantic pageant, despite the hyperbolic title. Through Doerr's eyes it is a profoundly moving and inclusive experience shared by millions.
I loved this book. It is the kind of book you want to urge your friends and loved ones to read, to give as a gift. I look forward to reading much more from this gifted and warm writer.Four Seasons in Rome: On Twins, Insomnia, and the Biggest Funeral in the History of the World Overview

I am impressed with how organized and well laid out it is and the effort that must have gone into putting so much information together.
