The English Room ReviewChippy Irvine's "The English Room" is a sumptuous overview of English decorative style. She is a stunningly effective teacher, deftly combining in very little space English decorative history, English furniture and architectural styles, and the uniquely warm English touch with fabrics, floor coverings, and drapery. The text is a miniature but very thorough education, and a delightful stroll through centuries of English history.
The photographs are something to behold. Photographer Christopher Simon Sykes has presented a panoply of different takes on classically English style with a sober, all-seeing eye. Nothing is prettied up--even a romantic candlelit dining room is presented in a straightforward manner--so that we are left to make up our own minds without Sykes' style being the thing we notice first about the pictures.
Everything the frustrated Anglophile/decorator could want is contained within these pages. Irvine neatly divides the book in two--City (think Rex Harrison's home in the 1964 film version of "My Fair Lady") and Country (think Emma Thompson's place in either "Howards End" or "Sense & Sensibility"). Within these areas, she covers front halls, bedrooms, dining rooms, kitchens, and even bathrooms. How great-looking can a bathroom be? Well, the most beautiful bathroom I think I have ever seen in my life is featured on p. 171. It may also be one of the most beautiful ROOMS I've ever seen, featuring as it does tall, divided-light mirrors which appear to be windows; a plain white tub surrounded with black, grey-streaked marble; pilasters and pediments a-plenty, but all covered with a restrained chalk white; dentil molding and paneled doors; and a perfectly handsome paneled toilet which would be perfectly at home in a living room in a lesser home. Oh, yes, and let's don't forget the curvaceous bronze and crystal chandelier. It sounds over the top, but it is perfectly composed, a lovely cameo of a room. It ably embodies the idea that good design is never wasted, no matter how unimportant the room or how poorly it is sited. Chippy Irvine continues to make that point, and many others, throughout the pages of this delightful and handsome book.The English Room OverviewThe English Room takes you on a room-by-room exploration of the English home, contrasting town with country life, rooms designed for pleasure with those for more practical needs, and rooms meant to receive visitors with those that are private retreats. Country cottages and London flats, drawing rooms and kitchens all conjure up the essence of English life.

Mlinaric on Decorating ReviewThirteen illustrated chapters exhibit Mlinaric's "new and refreshing eclectic approach" he brings to any interior decoration job. He rose to prominence in the 1960's and 1970's English decorating scene for his association with the group of leading decorators; and also for work he did for Mick Jagger and other prominent cultural figures of the time. The standards and flair of Mlinaric's eclecticism, however, are such that he was not confined to this period. In the 1980s and '90s, he worked on the much-publicized and much-praised restoration of Spencer House in London for Lord Rothschild. Besides being linked with major cultural figures, Mlinaric also received commissions for work for major public institutions. Among these were the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the National Gallery in London.
Mlinaric's reputation and his eclectic style led to work outside of England as well. He did interior decorating on projects in Italy, Corfu, France, Ireland, and also Texas and New York. The sites of his work range from city to country to water side to rural; the projects, from apartments and individual rooms to sections and private and public areas of manors. This variety of work is displayed in the thirteen chapters on individual projects and in a few cases similar type of project throughout Europe and a couple of spots in the U.S. Several photographs of different sizes from wide angle for entire rooms to close-ups for details of particular objects or groupings capture the accomplishment of the interior design. Mlinaric decorates a room as its architect might imagine it to be decorated ideally. Spacing, colors, shapes, central utilitarian objects such as sofas or beds, and furnishings such as lamps, ceramics, or bronzes make each room unique, inviting, and habitable. Mlinaric seamlessly and singularly bridges the usual, conventional divide between private and public. The objects of his designs--whether chosen by him or givens as with museum pieces--attract, and satisfy, one intellectually and sensually; while their placement (in spots in rooms of homes) or presentation (in museums) gives off an aura of intimacy and ease. This bridging of private and public is accomplished by one's conscious or unconscious involvement with the objects. In museums, this can be paintings, sculptures, or objects d'art; in private homes, often these combined with finely-bound books, ornately-framed mirrors, simply-shaped lamp shades, and combinations of formal-looking and generously-padded furniture.

Curiosity about how Mlinaric acquired his knowledge and vision is answered in the first chapter. Born in 1939, Mlinaric attended London's Bartlett School of Architecture; which at the time followed a historical approach to the study of architecture. This traditional approach included subjects such as "sciagraphy," the science of how shadows are cast and in so doing affect architecture. Travel to his father's birthplace of Yugoslavia and to Italy and France complemented his sound, traditional learning. In Paris, by chance he came upon the shop of the legendary decorator Madeleine Castaing. Its collection of mixed objects and materials made a lasting impression on him. Such are some origins of Mlinaric's outstanding design sense which is both uncompromising over decades and adaptable to the nature of each particular project. His characteristic eclecticism has no relationship to collage, pastiche, or kitsch. It is a reflection of classical education, wide-ranging experience and interests, and intuitions of space. He absorbed Madeleine Castaing's remark about designing rooms as poets write poems.

Kilims: Decorating With Tribal Rugs ReviewThe high quality of the photographic reproductions and the high book publication production values make this book. If you've ever begun to look at so-called Persian carpets, you've no doubt been bewildered by the huge variation in price and quality in these things: Hand woven, powerloomed, hand tufted, machine made, vegetable dyes, artificial dyes, cotton, silk, wool, gabbeh, kilim, rug, Indian, Pakistani, Kurdish, Iranian -not to mention the various tribal and trade names for these things. In other words there is just a head-spinning, mind numbing variety of "Persian" carpets available today and it is super easy to pay too much for inferior quality rugs without knowing a bit about them. Thus, this book is a great first step toward finding some excellent floor covering for your home (and, as evinced by this author, for your pillows, furniture, walls and windows). The book is done in roughly two parts. The first half of the book is a discussion of the history of the rug, with a description of how rugs are made and what goes into them. This discussion is accompanied by a large number of excellent color reproductions to inform the reader. The last part of the book is given over to decorating tips also with many photographic examples, and while this part held little interest for me because I'm not into such things, I suspect a few of the author's many great ideas will be employed by a large percentage of those who read this book. Don't expect a discussion of values, costs, etc. Also, do not expect a reference guide to symbology or a guide to specific tribal motifs, etc. Look for that kind of info instead in more formal studies or books about collectible carpets. Having said this, the author does thoughtfully include a list of carpet retailers at the back of her book, a couple of whom I recognized as well-respected carpet merchants with international reputations. Presently there is a fair number of this book available from Amazon sellers for less than the original publication price and as such I believe this presents an excellent value; kind of like paying for the author's output and getting the great pictures and high quality paper, binding and printing of the book for free. I highly recommend this book to the beginning rug buyer, or perhaps a decorator who wants a great coffee table book for an excellent price.Kilims: Decorating With Tribal Rugs OverviewWoven with rich, jewel-like colors and intricate symbols, tribal rugs have a timeless quality that fits into any decor. A handmade rug adds comfort and pulls a room together. This is the story of Persian rugs both ancient and modern. It delves into their history and manufacture, and explores their decorating potential and care. In addition, the foreword explains how to select and purchase these rugs wisely -- a major concern of North American consumers. With their vivid colors and patterns, kilims, decorating potential is not limited to the floor. They can be used as pillows, curtains, and wallhangings or to co ver tables, beds, and sofas. From the oldest known rug found in a frozen Siberian tomb to modern weaving done by women nomads and village dwellers, kilims are living art.

Sheer Opulence (Decor Best-Sellers) ReviewNicholas Haslam must surely be the most well-connected decorator of his time. As a very young man he was hanging out with the likes of Lady Diana Cooper and company. The book's inside-flap wastes no time in reminding us of his celebrity clientel.He has had privilged entree to some of the most ravishingly beautiful rooms of his time, and he is an astute observer of the elements that go to make up that thing called Style. His essays are excellently presented, his watercolours delightful.
If only he had brought these talents to bear upon his own interiors, which are at their best merely whimsical and at worst faintly tawdry. The gorgeous photography serves to reinforce the notion that all interior decoration is somehow suspect. Use of materials and architectural detail is arbitrary to a fault.In short, nothing quite rings true, and the quality of Character that this designer admires in the works of his predecessors is disconcertingly absent from these hollow excercises. Perhaps when Evelyn Waugh's Mrs Beaver noted that "decoration is not an exact science" she gave the world something to chew on.
Several years ago Mr Haslam moved into the Hunting Lodge, lived in previously by the great John Fowler. A double paged spread illustrates a corner of the diminutive Sitting Room. A bulky sofa having an array of "accent" cushions is thrust further into the room by a table behind it, and above that table are 18century French engravings in gilt frames. The effect is ludicrous. One hardly expected Nicky Haslam to dupicate the Fowler scheme, but at the very least he might have honored the spirit of the place, and restrained himself from tarting things up.
Nonetheless, this is a fascinating glimpse into a sort of unreal, fantasy world where publicity and social skills count for
something alarmingly persuasive. John Fowler: Prince of Decorators Review
With a remarkable memory for the smallest detail, imagination, and an appreciation of beauty, John Fowler was called "the Prince of Decorators." He may well have deserved that sobriquet, but in this lushly illustrated 240 volume we also learn that he was not a prince of a fellow.
Early in his career Fowler worked as a painter for Thornton Smith, commercial decorators. It was there that he learned to paint "the Chinese wallpapers that were so fashionable at the time", and also how to grime and distress furniture. Later, in 1928 or 1929 he set out to work on his own, often freelancing for other decorators. Following a series of commissions, a 1938 House Garden article placed Fowler among England's leading decorators. Rising from a salaried painter to this position in a decade was quite a feat.
More success followed as he joined Sybil Colefax in 1938. He was 32; she who enjoyed stature as a society hostess was 64. However, their alliance was dramatically affected with the outbreak of war when decorating all but stopped. After Sybil Colefax's death the firm of Colefax & Fowler was acquired by Nancy Lancaster, a Virginian whose work is thought of as "English style." She was to teach Fowler much about comfort and scale, "how large houses could be used and enjoyed in the modern world."
Fowler, who died in 1977, had an enviable client list. He transformed some of the most famous houses in England, and was commissioned by Buckingham Palace. The style created by the team of Colefax & Fowler endures today, English Country House Style represents not only decoration but a way of life. Many try to emulate it but none capture it as did John Fowler.
Those with an interest in twentieth century design will treasure this keepsake volume.

The English country house style, which he developed with Sibyl Colefax and Nancy Lancaster, his partners in the firm of Colefax & Fowler, has proved a source of continuing inspiration to decorators and home-owners on both sides of the Atlantic and indeed across the world. Today, a hundred years after his birth, his influence is almost as powerful as it was in the mid 20th century, when he was working on many of Britain's finest and most famous houses, including Uppark, Chequers and Buckingham Palace, as well as dozens of more modest projects. Fowler's style has been so widely imitated that it is easy to forget what an innovator he was. In the 1930s and 1940s his style was a breath of fresh country air, sweeping away heavy velvets and damasks in favour of crisp cotton chintzes, replacing glossy mahogany with painted Regency furnishings, elaborate porcelain and glitzy ormolu with modest pottery and painted tin. Even after the war, when he came to specialize in the decoration of architecturally important interiors, he continued to prefer 'humble elegance' and 'romantic disrepair' to pomposity.

The House in Good Taste ReviewElsie De Wolfe is acknowleged as the first woman to make a fortune as a decorator and can be called the first life style maven of the 20th century. Her opinions on home decor were eagerly seized upon by millions of aspirational women around the country. She wrote The House in Good Taste 90 years ago but it's just as fresh and suitable now as it was then.
I can't bring myself to agree with her on patchwork quilts, lace curtains or rocking chairs but she's absolutely correct in her advice on wallpaper, paint and apartments. The Decoration of Houses: ReviewAmidst today's seemingly endless supply of domestic guides and treatises on interior decoration, Edith Wharton might be surprised that her The Decoration of Houses (co-authored with architect Ogden Codman, Jr.) would still be as relevant and necessary as it is a century after its first publication. Long before "simplicity" and "classic" became catchwords for branding, Wharton took a public stand against the bland, trite excesses of Victorian décor in America. Favoring the considered, informed and complex processes of design rooted in architectural principles, her graceful humility was matched only by her assertive plea against the contemporary dominance of thoughtless, conspicuous consumption visible in New York society. As she determinately decreed: "According to the creed of the modern manufacturer, you have only to combine certain `good' to obtain a certain style."
Often associated with the frivolity connected to historical descriptions of femininity, this volume might be a surprise for those who prefer to view Wharton as a New York literary powerhouse. While her 40 books in 40 years (many of which were devoted to travels through European residences and gardens) are a testament to the force of her pen, it's the themes of beauty, pleasure, societal indulgence, cultural education and cosmopolitanism in America's modernity that make her analysis, and eventual ruling on the importance of design and space, a necessary extension of her literary thought. As she aptly begins her historical and aesthetic analysis, "Rooms may be decorated in two ways: by a superficial application of ornament totally dependent of structure, or by means of those architectural features which are part of the organism of every house, inside as well as out." And it's through these sixteen chapters that reflect on everything from the front door to the dining room to bric-a-brac that she offers readers a glimpse at the historic function of furnishings, as well as her claims about taste, beauty and the impact of residential design.
The Italian, French and British capacity for decorating in accord with the Grecian edict of "wise moderation," so admired by Wharton, is illustrated by black and white plates. The illustrations also reveal that the author's penchant for "classic" beauty wasn't about recreating kitschy historic facades or stoic sparseness. Rather, a considered pleasure seems to be her goal as she concludes, "There is no absolute perfection, there is no communicable ideal; but much that is empiric, much that is confused and extravagant, will give way before the application of principles based on common sense and regulated by the laws of harmony and proportion." True to her appreciation for sincerity in the application of decorative principles, readers can see the realization of her rules if they visit the Mount, a 113-acre Lenox estate designed by Wharton in 1902.
Recreated by Rizzoli using photographs of the original 1897 pressing, the only change made by the publishers in this edition is the use of the original interior dust jacket as the model for the printed design that now covers the book. Judith Miller's Color: Period and Regional Style from Around the World ReviewI went to the public library and looked through dozens of books on color in interior design before choosing three to buy, and this was one of the three. The author first discusses the history of color then makes presentations of varying length to showcase a number of historical (Georgian, Colonial, Rococo, Neoclassical, Victorian, Modernist and Post-Modern), national/regional (Tuscan, Mexican, Moroccan and Shaker) and predominant color (red, yellow, blue, green) schemes. Multiple examples are illustrated by sumptuous photographs, and palettes are included for each.
A concluding chapter on traditional sources of color is very interesting, and supplemental material includes a glossary; a directory to paint suppliers, places to visit, places to stay, and architects & designers; and an index.
(The other two books I chose at the library were J. Poore's Interior Color by Design and C. Not the usual big book of beautiful homes from around the world, INSPIRATIONAL INTERIORS is an informative, very helpful, and realistic guide on making choices about design elements in every home, no matter the scale or size.
Many designers deal with the expensive furniture and accoutrements that most assuredly are elegant and creative when combined with the authoratative eye of a fine designer. But where Banks-Pye varies in his approach is focusing on the individual elements that make the whole. He spends significant time on pillows, windows (whether or not to drape), tables of all sizes, furniture that compliments the architecture of rooms and enhances the space, and of course the multiple bibelots that add a touch of the exotic or unique to an individual's home.

The effect is always tasteful and serene.

Laura Ashley's brand had and continues to have an enormous impact not only on the way we dress but in our homes from bedroom to bath to kitchen. The birth of her design philosophy is fascinating as detailed by Martin Wood in this stunning volume.
Born in Wales in 1925 Laura always remembered her Welsh roots. As time passed and her brand mushroomed into a multi-million dollar business she was able to open factories in rural Wales, which brought much needed jobs to many. As a child she observed her great grandmother at work on her quilting frame and young Laura was taught to do patchwork as well as needlework. She worked for a time as a secretary in the handcrafts department at the Women's Institute where she saw what women were doing at home, and she decided to do the same herself.
What many may not know is what a marvelous team Laura and her husband, Bernard, were. He was ambitious, a business man who "appreciated colour and design." This paired with Laura's eye for detail, fashion, and early needlework experience proved to be an unbeatable combination. Incredibly, as the world knows, they designed not only clothing but household items as well through numerous stores. Their's was a remarkable partnership.
As is his wont Martin Wood has fulled this volume with gorgeous photos and drawings, some 200 found in the Laura Ashkey company's archives and the family's personal records.
Laura Ashley is a book to be treasured by all who have an interest in fashion and design.

Eco House Book ReviewToo often, books on green building hector their readers, or at best, pay a little lip service to environmental issues while pushing products. Not so "Eco House Book," by Terence Conran, who has written yet another sensible work that should help homeowners to think carefully about their living spaces.
Conran identifies and explains what we're seeing, moving from a house built to survive the wind on a desert mesa in New Mexico, to a home in Chicago designed to capture natural light to an off-the-grid home in Oregon and to a home in Sweden that is entirely unpainted but still well-insulated and warm, and plenty of other structures along the way.
