Sherlock Holmes Mystery Magazine 4 ReviewIt is really too bad that the Sherlock Holmes Mystery Magazine is inconsistent not merely regarding the periodicity, but also (and far more importantly) regarding the quality of works getting published there. This particular issue has the following: -
1) From Watson's Scrapbook, by "John H. Watson", accompanied by a piece from Marvin Kaye: the novelty is wearing thin, and is not enjoyable either.
2) Sherlock on Screen, Again: A Review of the New Sherlock Holmes [DVD], by Bruce Kilstein: a candid review that may rankle with the opinions of many a Sherlockian, but readable, nevertheless.
3) A Woman of Her Time: an interview with New York City's Chief Toxicologist, by Carole Bugge: a refreshing read.
4) Screen of the Crime: Man of Thought, Man of Action, by Lenny Picker: another look at a forgotten classic A Study In Terror [1965] [DVD].
5) Ask Mrs. hudson: a forgettable feature that should be taken off by the editor.
6) The Bitter Half, by Stan Trybulski: a hard-bolied story which is undoubtedly good, but would have fit some other magazine better.
7) A Short, Sharp Shock, by Melville S. Brown: a good & short story, but nothing great here!
8) The Man in the Overcoat, by marc Bilgrey: the author should stick to his cartoons.
9) Glass Eye, by Hal Charles: a good story from the detective father-daughter duo, where the crime is invariably solved by the amateur daughter.
10) Another Night To Remember, by William E. Chambers: another hard-boiled story which would have shone in any other magazine, but here....
11) The Perfect (Part-Time) Foil, by Jean Paiva: the first readable piece by this author that I have read, a fantasy!
12) Miss Podsnap's Pearls, by Roberta Rogow: a very-very weak story, that filled in the slot usually occupied by Jean Paiva, by being the worst piece in the volume.
13) The Adventure of the Elusive Emaralds, by Carla Coupe: an intelligent pastiche loosely based on the lamented radio series produced by Anthony Boucher.
14) Classic Reprint: The Adventure of The Resident Patient, by Arthur Conan Doyle: this piece needs no descriptive words, and stand taller than the rest.
15) You Are My Sherlock, by Len Moffett: an inferior poem which could have been (and should have been) avoided.

The Patient's Eyes: The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes ReviewDavid Pirie's "The Patient's Eyes" is the first in a series of books about the collaboration between Arthur Conan Doyle and Joseph Bell. Doyle is a young medical student in Edinburgh when he meets Bell, who is both a teacher in the medical school and a forensic scientist. Doyle soon becomes Bell's clerk and the two work together on a number of cases, including the very strange one in this novel.
Doyle's patient, Heather Grace, is a lovely young woman who suffers from eye troubles and nightmares. She also believes that a man has been surreptitiously following her, and may wish to do her harm. Since Miss Grace is about to come into a great deal of money, Doyle suspects that her relatives may want to get their hands on her fortune. When Dr. Bell intercedes in the case, he uses his forensic skills, his intuition, and his uncanny powers of detection to get to the bottom of the affair.
Pirie is a superior writer and he brings all of the characters in "The Patient's Eyes" to brilliant life. Doyle is a callow and troubled young man who comes from a dysfunctional family. Bell is Doyle's mentor, and he may be the real life model for the great fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes. Pirie's language, settings, and even the titles he chooses for his chapters are all reminiscent of those used in the Sherlock Holmes stories. There are also puzzles galore in this book to intrigue those who love interesting ciphers.
The story is complicated yet thoroughly engrossing, and I was genuinely surprised by the developments at the end of the book. Pirie has a knack for writing satisfying mysteries and I look forward to more novels about the collaboration between Arthur Conan Doyle and Joseph Bell.The Patient's Eyes: The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes Overview

The Complete Sherlock Holmes: Four Novels and Four Short Story Collections in One Volume ReviewI have some problems with this edition. First, unlike most books, there is no publisher or publication information listed in the book. There is a brief note in the back that it was printed in Lexington, Kentucky. A "Publisher's Note" at the beginning states, "This volume contains all of the Sherlock Holmes stories that are available in the public domain." Keep in mind, however, that this is NOT the "complete" Sherlock Holmes--the stories in The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes are missing. There is nothing stating that this edition was authorized by the Doyle estate, and it appears that these stories were just taken from some public domain source, compiled, and published. I wonder if the Doyle estate actually receives any royalties from the sale of this book.
My second issue with this edition is the amount of spelling and typographical errors. In the Table of Contents, for example, "The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist" is printed as "The Adventure of the Politary Cyclist." On page 75, a sentence begins "Toby proved to an ugly, long-haired, lop-eared creature," and clearly this should read "Toby proved to be and ugly, long-haired, lop-eared creature."
My third issue is that there are no annotations in this edition. When Holmes spouts some German or Latin phrase, I have no idea what he is saying.
Overall, while it is nice to have the four novels and most of the stories in one volume, instead of having to buy them all separately, this is a cheap, bare-bones, and poorly compiled collection. Sherlock Holmes, Vol. 1 ReviewIt is 1878 and Doctor John Watson, his health damaged by his experiences with the British Army in Afghanistan during the Second Anglo-Afghan War, is looking for lodgings in the great city of London. It seems fortuitous, when a mutual friend introduces him to another who needs someone to share costs on a suite on Baker Street, but this other man is quite an eccentric. Sherlock Holmes has bent his life and education towards turning himself into the premier detective.
Watson can hardly credit Holmes's claims of what a first-class detective can do. But, when a note arrives from a Scotland Yard detective, inviting Holmes to consult on a particularly mysterious murder, Watson soon finds himself carried along by Holmes, watching his new friend's powers unravel a seemingly inscrutable knot. The game is afoot, and Holmes needs to solve a murder, and bring a murderer to justice.
This fascinating book was first published in 1887, and was the very first Sherlock Holmes story. In it we get to see the first meeting of Holmes and Watson, and hear Holmes explain his methods in detail. If you are a fan of murder mysteries, then this is definitely a book that you should not miss.
The center part of this story revolves around the actions of the Mormon Church in Salt Lake City, Utah. Author Arthur Conan Doyle had a tendency to "wing" the details of his story, and his treatment of the Mormons shows a certain carelessness in how he presented them. Therefore, if you are a Mormon, you will most likely find this book offensive.
But, that said, this is a wonderfully entertaining story that is sure to please most every mystery fan. And, if you are a fan of Sherlock Holmes, then you must read this book! It's great.Sherlock Holmes, Vol. 1 Overview

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (AD Classic) ReviewSir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous sleuth really doesn't need any introduction -- Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective who can uncover the deeper layers of seemingly simply crimes, and unravel the intricacies of impossible ones. "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" is another round of exceptional mysteries, including the infamous one in which Holmes seemingly meets his death. Spoilers below.
When a famous horse in the Wessex Cup races vanishes, Holmes decides to go solve the case, along with Watson... and quickly discovers that it's not a simple case of theft. Then "The Case of the Yellow Face" comes up when a man asks Holmes to get to the bottom of his wife's weird behavior and strange yellow-faced visitor -- and even Holmes may not fully grasp what is going on.
Among the other cases: a client who suddenly commits suicide, an old man with a guilty secret, an ancient riddle that may have caused a servant's death, a sinister father-son team, a bizarre locked-room murder with the word "David," a man forced to interpret Greek for a sinister kidnapping gang, and a stolen naval treaty.
And in "The Final Problem," the evil Professor Moriarty tries to kill Holmes to keep the detective from bringing down his criminal network, with disastrous results. Don't worry, the shocking ending isn't quite as... well, shocking as it seems.
"The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" is a little more varied than Doyle's previous Sherlock Holmes collection, and it also has an ending that shocked his reading audiences. Namely: Holmes dies. Don't worry, readers nagged Doyle into bringing him back to life, but it's pretty startling since we're used to the good guy triumphing over all.
And as usual, Doyle crafts two kinds of crimes/mysteries -- the ones that are ultra-simple but turn out to have hidden kinks, and the ones that seem impossible to solve but are actually shockingly simple. And something rather startling happens in "The Adventure of the Yellow Face": Holmes screws up. You don't see that very often. The only problem is that the cases are rather less colorful and gripping than "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes'."
Doyle also shows the perils of Holmes' job in this one -- he has kind of a nervous breakdown and gets sick from overwork, and needs a vacation that (of course) is interrupted by more cases. Additionally, we get some glimpses into both Holmes and Watson's back histories, such as Holmes' college days and Watson's time in the military.
"The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" is a suitably baffling string of mysteries, with plenty of weird twists and crimes -- including the ultimate one at the end.The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (AD Classic) OverviewThe Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of short stories, including the adventures of The Silver Blaze, The Musgrave Ritual, and The Final Problem. Holmes will need to use his various skills, including a knack at cracking ciphers, deciphering riddles, tricking thieves, analyzing tracks, and faking sickness to solve cases involving impersonation, burglary and revenge.Sherlock Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess and is renowned for his skilful use of deductive reasoning, astute observation, and forensic skills to solve difficult cases. Deductive reasoning allows Holmes to impressively reveal a stranger's occupation. Similarly, by studying inanimate objects, he is able to make astonishingly detailed deductions about their owners. This mindset was a major innovation in the field of crime fiction, inspiring authors like Robert J. Sawyer, Neil Gaiman and Stephen King.

The Complete Sherlock Holmes ReviewI love the Sherlock Holmes mysteries and have enjoyed many a bedtime story with the great sleuth, so it was with great anticipation that I purchased the Kindle version of this volume of short stories. I was sadly disappointed, though, to find that apparently the publishers did not understand the audience that buys short story collections; they did not bother to include something most basic and needful in an anthology - a table of contents. Without a table of contents the reader has no choice but to start at page one and hit "Next Page" hundreds of times to access stories further into the volume. This is a ridiculous oversight that completely ruins the experience of picking up a good collection of short stories and choosing a story to read at a whim based on the title. If one cannot see all of the titles in an included table of contents, then one is forced to start at the beginning and read them all chronologically. This may work in a novel, but it decidely does not work as a format for a collection of short stories. Please actually keep the reader in mind the next time that you publish a Kindle version of short stories. Include a table of contents.The Complete Sherlock Holmes Overview

The Mysterious Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Puffin Classics) ReviewI bought this for my 8 year old who has read some adapted versions of Sherlock Holmes from the school library and enjoyed them. Although this book came up under the search for children's books, the language is too advanced for him as they are the original stories of Sir Arthur Conan Coyle. My mistake, I guess, in assuming they were a more simplified version. However, the selection of stories is very good.The Mysterious Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Puffin Classics) OverviewThis book includes further adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson.

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes ReviewSir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a number of books, but to me, nothing really worked like his Sherlock Holmes mysteries. The characters are believable, and one begins to think that one almost knows them. The characters in Doyle's other books just don't have the same character.
I've read all these stories before, but I had forgotten how they all turn out at the end. They are perfect for reading just before sleeping; you can finish one story easily each night before your eyes close and drift off to sleep.
I love the way Holmes sees even the smallest details and is able to deduce truths from them. Of course these are classics that people will enjoy for centuries.The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes Overview

Well, actually, as any reader of Sherlock Holmes will know Holmes did not say it exactly like that when talking of discovery and facts. But what the reader will discover between these pages is the fact of 22 stories from the pen of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Stories which the reader will no doubt want to read and read again many times over.
This is the 3rd print of this mass market from Signet Classics, with the book being printed in 1985, 1987, and again with this 2005 edition. Since 1887 with A Study in Scarlet the novels and short stories of A. Conan Doyle have never been hard to find. If somehow you have never read any of the Sherlock Holmes material what a treat is awaiting you! Next to Shakespeare, Holmes may be the most sought after reading material to ever issue forth from Britain.
Some of my favorites are included here: The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle, The Empty House, The Adventure of the Speckled Band, and The Six Napoleons. Many may read Dickens' Chistmas Carol but for me hardly a Christmas passes without my either reading The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle or watching the DVD, and yes most of these stories are available on DVD from the earlier PBS/BBC productions of the 1980s.
"Indisputably the greatest fictional detective of all time".
Highly recommended.

The Complete Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes: A Facsimile of the Original Strand Magazine Stories, 1891-1893 ReviewOn the whole this is a decent Kindle version. It contains the complete works of Sherlock Holmes including all novels and short stories.
There are reproductions of the original art which render rather nicely on the Kindle although they are out of sequence sometimes showing up on the page after where you would expect them to follow along with the story.
There are some slight formatting issues that I personally have with the layout of the chapter headings. In addition, which the Table of Contents links you to the beginning of a story, it doesn't allow navigation to chapters within some of the novel works. If not for these 2 issues I'd give this edition 5 stars.
Otherwise the Table of Contents works well and also gives direct links to the illustrations in the book, which is a nice touch.

The Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (Modern Library Classics) ReviewTHE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES and THE MEMOIRS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES are here collected into a single volume in this Penguin edition. Two compediums of short stories published after the detective's introduction in the novels A STUDY IN SCARLET and THE SIGN OF FOUR, these are concise bits that are just as good a first exposure to Holmes as the novels.
Because the cases of Sherlock Holmes, dutifully chronicled by his companion Dr. Watson, may not appeal to everyone, I won't focus here on reviewing the stories themselves, as it is the features of this particular edition that are of note.
Iain Pears' introduction is quite enlightening, showing the tendency of Arthur Conan Doyle to make the troubles in Holmes' stories come from England's colonies, which is strange considering Conan Doyle's support of equality and respect for all peoples. Pears' also discusses the change in the style of the Holmes stories, from the rational youth of Conan Doyle to the latter days of his life when he was interested in spiritualism and mysticism.
There are footnotes to each story, compiled by Ed Glinert. An expert on literature set in London, Glinert explains the geographical settings of the Holmes stories, and defines anachronistic terms that are no longer use. He also points out the mistakes Arthur Conan Doyle frequently made in his stories, which are often quite amusing (Watson's wife calling him by the wrong name, contradicting timelines, etc).

The Original Illustrated Sherlock Holmes ReviewIf you're a Holmes fan, this book will make a great addition to your collection: it reproduces the original illustrations created by Sydney Paget for the stories in Strand Magazine. (But it's not the "complete" Sherlock Holmes -- some of the stories were published elsewhere.) Paget was originally a fashion illustrator, hired by mistake for his brother Walter who specialized in adventure stories -- but the Holmes tales brought out the best in Sydney. While some of the pictures are merely dutiful scene-setting, others are exciting enhancements of the story (cf. the Hound of the Baskervilles!). In any case, the pictures are a good corrective for the cartoonish Holmes and Watson depicted in dozens of Hollywood epics: they're a pair of active, well-dressed young men, not the scarecrow and his doddering sidekick. (The TV series with Jeremy Brett got this right, although it made a botch of some of the plots.) And I enjoyed the glimpses they give you into the world of Victorian society -- the interiors of elegant living rooms and hansom cabs, ladies' at-home dresses, tea-trays and decanters. It's great to have all of the stories and novels put together, in the order that they were published--there are references here and there to things that happened in previous stories. Of course, you don't have to read everything in order, but its worth it all the same.
Some of my all-time favorite stories in this volume of the collection are "The Red-Headed League," and "The Adventure of the Speckled Band." Also worth a read are the short novels A Study In Scarlet, The Sign of Four, and The Hound of the Baskervilles. They illustrate Doyle's (and Holmes's) mastery of the art of observation. As Holmes says in a story in the second volume, "I see as much as you, but I notice what I see."
