The Redemption Factory ReviewI just finished rereading this book and am in awe of the dark tone to the book. It is very rare that you can talk about a literal bloodbath in a novel, but this book is filled with brutal scenes such as the one I referenced. I returned to this book after completing the Karl Kane series and can confidently say that Sam Millar writes great stand alone novels as well as terrific series. Millar shows a great knack of using imagery to set the mood in this book. If I had to "marry" two authors that would produce this type of noir it would be Ken Bruen + Greg Iles. This book uses language as a medium to paint a fantastic setting filled with some of the most unique characters I have met in some time. Millar uses this language to set the scenes, but he also uses sparse language to keep the pace moving nicely. Few authors can accomplish that task, but Millar seems to do it with ease. Check out my reviews of Bloodstorm and The Dark Place and you will see that although this was a very good book, Millar is getting better and better as he publishes more books. Read this book as an introduction, then run, don't walk, to order the Karl Kane series. As for me, I will be ordering his other early novels, locking myself in a dark room and enjoying the upcoming dark, bleak months with some dark, bleak books.The Redemption Factory Overview

Father's Day: A Mystery Review
Louis Klein has returned to the scene of his broken life in Philadelphia. A hard-nosed ex-cop, Klein is currently living in his dead mother's house- her murder still unsolved- attempting to honor a long ago commitment to his dead ex-partner, Sam Blackwell. Sam's widow, Sarah, who has a brief history with Lou as well, has begged him to locate her missing daughter, Carol Ann, a deeply troubled teenager. Appealing to Lou's knight-in-shining-armor instincts, however dulled by time, Sarah is not above using her feminine wiles to reveal only what she wants Klein to know about her daughter's recent activities. Married now to a powerful, dangerous man who controls most of the city's movers and shakers, Sarah is a woman who usually gets her way, even though she pays a high price for it. It is up to Klein to sift fact from fiction, to track Carol Ann through the detritus of a rebellious life and unsavory acquaintances.
Like the noir films of the 50s, Gilman's Philadelphia is riddled with crime, graft and corruption, his own path shadowed by a less-than-stellar career, a cop given to excessive force, a troubled marriage and a tenuous relationship with his only daughter, Maggie. Things get rough as soon as Lou begins asking questions and banging heads; people die; a distraught Sarah overdoses. But Klein hangs on like a dog with a bone, refusing to relinquish the little progress he has made. In taking on this case, Lou has opened old wounds to meet the obligation of the past, a process of self-flagellation and determination, revealing his own flaws along with the ugly secrets of Carol Ann, Sarah and Sam Blackwell. Filled with wise guys, weary cops and people stumbling under the burden of past mistakes, this is a humorless, dark tale, Carol Ann's prospects looking worse as the time passes.
Klein retreats to the past to recover his integrity and some small hope for the future, pragmatically cleansed of regrets. Gilman writes of this world with familiarity and compassion, big city America not yet robbed of all its promise, albeit severely damaged. Klein embraces the cop's life, that murky terrain of law and order where well-intentioned men face too much of humanity's depravity to remain unscathed. To walk around with Louis Klein is to understand this particular environment: each step closer to Carol Ann's fate puts Klein on a collision course with his own conscience, his survival in an indifferent world. Pulp Fiction ReviewI have not purchased this book, but I have purchased its sister publication: Pulp Fiction: The Villains and was pleased with this British-published anthology. Unfortunately, I purchased and just received the Black Lizard Big Book of Pulps, published in USA; it includes all the stories in The Villains and has 2 other major sections entitled "The Dames" and "The Crimefighters". I believe the Crimefighters book is also included completely in the Black Lizard Big Book of Pulp. Also, the Black Lizard volume is printed in 2-column format(like the original pulps) with the original story illustration included. Unfortunately the Black Lizard book is printed on much cheaper paper with apparent smaller type face. The Black Lizard book has a tremendous amount of reading in it; it is a giant book.Pulp Fiction OverviewHarlan Coben introduces a collection of the greatest of the great from the Golden Age of pulp fiction. This volume consists of two other separately published volumes, bound together in one. The Big Blowdown ReviewFans of George Pelecanos will not be disappointed in this excellent novel. Set in D.C. during the years just before and after WWII, his familiar cast of characters inhabit a world of hope and violence that somehow seems appropriate to the American Dream. The plot is engaging and believable, the action is fast paced, and the character portrayals are as satisfying as a reader could want. This is a great story of friendship, betrayal and flawed redemption. Much more than just a 'crime novel' (and this is true of his other books as well) The Big Blowdown evokes a time when everthing seemed possible, from great success to 'the Big Blowdown' (atomic annihilation) and tells the story a few immigrant kids whose future turns out to be quite different from any they would have imagined.
Reading a Pelecanos book always leaves me feeling as though I had touched a piece of real life. This book has the added appeal of touching a real piece of time gone by as well. Very satisfying. I highly recommend it.The Big Blowdown Overview

Raymond Chandler: Later Novels and Other Writings: The Lady in the Lake / The Little Sister / The Long Goodbye / Playback /Double Indemnity / Selected Essays and Letters (Library of America) ReviewContained in this volume are the last four (of seven) Marlowe novels, the Double Indemnity script co-written with Billy Wilder (including lines that were cut), his famous essay on "The Simple Art of Murder", one on "Writers in Hollywood", another titled "Twelve Notes on the Mystery Story", and finally "Notes (very brief, please) on English and American Style". Couple these with thoroughly entertaining and sometimes revealing letters to friends and fans, and you can't miss.
In one of these letters he even discusses fellow hardboiled writer Ross Macdonald's (here called John, as he hadn't changed his name yet) The Moving Target, which cribbed some ideas from The Big Sleep and Dashiell Hammett's The Thin Man.
The novels themselves? Classic Chandler - enough said. If you'd like to know why you should expect the best in hardboiled detective fiction, well, read 'em all, or at least one. (If you're planning on that course of action, try the first in the series, The Big Sleep, included in a similar volume called Stories and Early Novels: Pulp Stories/The Big Sleep/Farewell, My Lovely/The High Window.)
