Maybe it's because I've read others that are far better: The Visual Handbook to Building and Remodeling, by Charles Wing, and Building An Affordable Home, by Ruiz. Both these books contain far more specific info. Building on a Shoestring includes such priceless advice as: "comparison shop." "The more bells and whistles you opt for, the more you'll pay." Even when info. is good, it's too vague, like "limit the amount of plumbing pipe you have to lay." How? Some of the info. is NOT cost-cutting, but actually increases costs: Install a shut-off valve at EVERY plumbing fixture; Build 16 inches on center rather than 24. Black & Decker Complete Home Improvement: with 300 Projects and 2,000 Photos (Black & Decker Complete Photo Guide) ReviewThis is the best home improvement manual I've been able to find. I recently embarked on a journey to convert a kitchen pantry into a half bath. Although I'm fairly handy with tools, I've never done a significant house project before. After starting in on the destruction of the pantry (ripping down plaster) my neighbor loaned me this book to poke through. Eventually I picked it up and the more I read, the more I found relevant to my project. Eventually I found myself hovered over this book prior to doing just about anything short of driving a nail (I may have even looked that up!) Let me say that everything involved in installing a bathroom is in this book - framing for the new walls, installing drywall, taping and finishing drywall, installing DWV pipes, installing plumbing supply lines, installing the electricity, installing ceramic tile floor, installing the sink, everything, and more. The first 100 pages or so are dedicated to the high-level subjects (carpentry, plumbing, wiring, etc) and even include some general building code information.
Unfortunately, my neighbor came to reclaim the book, and after looking for a book of similar substance, I have circled back to this one. Today I'm buying this book with the Complete Photo Guide to Outdoor Home Improvement (I've been asked to build a brick patio next.) As a former Army helicopter mechanic, I used to feel as though with a chopper manual and the right tools I could fix anything. Seriously, this book makes me feel the same way about home improvement projects. I can't think of anything you could do to the interior of a home that's not in this book. Want to rip down an interior wall to open up living space? In here. How about a glass block partition around your shower stall? Yep. Skylights? A bay window? Parquet floors? Stucco finish on the walls? How Clean Is Your House: Hundreds of Handy Tips to Make Your Home Sparkle ReviewBeing a former housekeeper for an apartment complex, I was quite amused that these two ladies would be kicking up the dust on this topic. LifetimeTV is obviously trying to have its version of the 'Two Fat Ladies' and/or Brit 'Fab Five' to call their own. You would think with the plethora of Merry Maids types out there that most homes wouldn't need folks actually tending to the dirt and grime they create in their homes.
How wrong!
Most of us can't afford the likes of professional cleaners weekly and/or don't want complete strangers in our homes while we are not there. This book is certainly worth its money if you can muster yourself from the chaise lounge and bon-bons or rally up some extra strength after a full day of work or family.
The only real problem some folks might quibble on are the British terms the ladies sometimes use through their book. I am not completely familiar with their 'washing soda' term. I'm not sure if they are referring to Borax or exactly what the substance might be. Perhaps an American proofreader might have been a good investment [Ok, call me an ignorant American- SIGH!]
It has great tips and daily, weekly, monthly and seasonal schedules for the completely clueless.
Though I originally picked this up from the Public Library in my town, I'm thinking strongly of my own copy if just for the tips that I hadn't thought of until I picked up this book.
Better to spend the money here and do-it-yourself than plunking it into the professional cleaning companies. How To Hide Anything ReviewI have several books on hiding places. While all of them have useful ideas, the strong suits of this book are the outdoor, structural, and away-from-home hiding places.
The outdoor hidies are great for those with their own land. There are several innovative ideas that the other books do not have, including a tree stash.
The structural hidies are also different -- these aren't just making false drawer bottoms. :) There are pipe, appliance, wall and even drain hidies. Furniture hidies are covered extensively as well, but this review focuses on what makes this book different from the other hiding books.
The away-from-home hiding places are ingenious, easy to do and will hide your valuables from the casual thief and the sticky-fingered maid alike. Obviously, there is little to no carpentry involved and in fact you could use the same principles in your own home if you are carpentry impaired like me. :)
One last strong point of this book is the writing. Throughout, it talks about the psychology of the thief and why some hides work better than others to prevent theft. The main focus is not hiding things from the government or the police, who often have a whole different mindset and a lot more time than a thief does. If you are more interested specifically in strategies to hide objects from law enforcement or the government, there are hiding books that focus on that rather than thieves and I recommend you get one of those instead.
Please note: As with all hiding place books, you simply must have some carpentry experience and a lot of patience. There are no step-by-step, hold-your-hand instructions on how to make a hiding place here (or in any other hiding book I've seen either). The "Cleaning Bible" is full of how-tos for easy cleaning, and recipes for making your own inexpensive, organic, & non-toxic cleaning supplies. I've actually tried lots of their ideas and they've all worked well. The only drawback to the book is the rather inefficient indexing. You have to take the time to familiarize yourself with what's in the book if you hope to be able to find information when you REALLY need it.
This book will become my new standard wedding or housewarming gift for new house-keepers! Encyclopedia of Home Maintenance & Repair (Wm. P. Spence) - This is a black & white book, but has very good explanations, especially of electrical.
Popular Mechanics When Duct Tape Just Isn't Enough: Quick Fixes for Everyday Disasters (Popular Mechanics) - This is kind of a "Hints from Heloise" for the home fix'r up'r.
