Life and Soul ReviewWith this train wreck of a book, author Ethan Willis attempts to pull at the heart strings of his intended audience. Unfortunately, Willis doesn't give his reader an ounce of credit... making the assumption that, if he makes a few tweaks to popular titles in this genre (think Charly), people will eat it up. The problem is that Ethan Willis simply doesn't know how to write! I couldn't connect with the characters; therefore, when ridiculous things happened to them, I felt no sympathy. None!
Not knowing anything about this bad author, I did some research and discovered that he is one of those motivational speakers who will do anything to earn a buck (his company was involved in a water boarding incident, he is under investigation by the SEC, the Department of Justice is looking into his unethical business practices). I don't see why this guy would write such garbage unless he is attempting to make a quick buck by assuming consumers are nothing but mindless zombies.
Don't buy this book!
Life and Soul OverviewBoy meets girl.Boy falls in love with girl.Girl buys lots of shoes.Victoria and Ethan were just a typical couple. But then untypical things happened and Victoria died.Ethan found her. He never saw it coming. Then he had to deal with it.This is all about how they met, how they fell in love, how he dealt with her dying and most importantly, what he did to turn something so sad into something positive.

Bodies Unbound: Transforming Lives Through Touch ReviewBodies Unbound: Transforming Lives Through Touch
I've been privileged to have experienced Cynthia's massage but would prefer to describe it as bodywork. Immediately, I had to read her book and could not stop reading Bodies Unbound.
My personal take away form this book is that our body is a medium of our soul reflecting our spiritual being. Being aware and cognizant of our bodies will educate and help us navigate how to go about each day.
Bodies Unbound: Transforming Lives Through Touch Overview'I love bodies, I love every shape they come in."With these words, Cynthia begins her story, sharing the insights she gained from giving over 30,000 massages.Bodies Unbound is a startlingly honest account of her life interwoven with short vignettes from the lives of some of her clients. It is one woman's journey of healing as the stories of her client's triggered Cynthia's own forgotten memories. This mutual awakening led to a healing process uniquely her own, where she goes deeply into the human dilemma and reveals a path to transform trauma into purpose and see psychological wounds as initiation. The truths about Life on this journey were hard won but deeply rewarding. Bodies Unbound is a fascinating story, a well-written book that will move you. It's powerful and poignant, but a wild ride, and not for the faint of heart! Bodies Unbound is full of inspiration and warmth. You will never see your life in the same way.

Briars: The House of Heirs ReviewThere are some books with which one must disavow all knowledge of the present day, and immerse oneself completely in the period of the story. Briars, by Ann Gray, is just such a book. It is a tale about a family in the South coping with the outcome of the Civil War. Each character handles the various crises in his or her own inimitable style, and each character grows from the experience either positively, or negatively. The subject of this book covers a very sad and difficult portion of Our Nation's history, and I found myself taken back in time to how people must have felt and acted in the 1860's. The characters are so real, I often felt as if I was reading an actual woman's journal from the period describing her family and nearby friends. Throughout all the hardships is a strong woman's faith that a far greater Force than she is in power, and that she and her family are surely guided by His Hand. I look foreward to other books by this author.Briars: The House of Heirs OverviewAt seventeen, Morgana Heirs' exotic dark beauty, inherited from her handsome father Morgan contrasts with her twenty year old sister Sarah's blonde prettiness and pale coloring, a token from their red haired mother, Lillian. Morgana's fiery and outspoken nature, also attributable to her father, conflicts with Sarah's genteel behavior, admired by all who know them. Having taken control of every aspect of her life beginning at the very hour of her traumatic birth, Morgana defiantly exhibits independence in an era when such behavior is unseemly in a woman of breeding. Spoiled by her father, 'Gana is an enigma to her stable and generous mother Lillian who, despite herself, leans towards her first daughter affectionately dubbed Sweet Sarah. Unaffected, Morgana entrusts her constant companion, Willow, Mulatto servant girl and daughter of household retainers, Henry and Rachel, with her confidences. Having been born only hours apart, Morgana and Willow share a kinship contradictory to expectations during the era in which they live.Sarah's betrothed, Jonathan Baker from Greenleaf, next door, along with the Heirs sisters' older brother Drew are away serving in the Confederate Army. Drew's dedicated wife, Laura Lee, mother of his twins, lives with his family at Briars. Wil, the younger Heirs brother, a gangling red haired fifteen year old, against his father's authority and his mother's fear for his well-being, desperately wishes to join in the battle before the war is over. Patriarch Morgan Heirs' sudden death, two days before Atlanta's fall, leaves the household stunned. When victory by Sherman's Union Army over Confederate General Hood brings about the capture and subsequent burning of Atlanta, the Heirs family is unable to evacuate to a safer locale as they must remain behind, awaiting Drew's leave from the Confederate Army for Morgan's burial. Meanwhile, Morgan's body lies in cold storage in the Heirs' nearby root cellar cave. With Atlanta in flames, on November 15, 1864,

THE WORLD ReviewThis novel held me spellbound throughout the exquisitely crafted plot, the carefully built tension, and the cathartic climax. 'The World' juxtaposes startling poetic language with an intimate window into a teenage boy's psyche. I truly felt that I was on a coming-of-age journey with 'The Artist', the novel's extremely likable main character. I experienced the young man's daily triumphs, frustrations and the wonders of his first love.
Mr. Kearns fearlessly experiments with plot and language, dialog, and characterization. A natural storyteller, he creates a compelling personality for each of his characters through believable, flowing dialog and sensitive depictions of feelings and motivation.
This fascinating read is influenced by the Irish-American experience, ancient myth, vernacular expression and excerpts from music and film. The fact that Mr. Kearns can combine these diverse inspirations and make the novel pack the punch of a singular strong statement is a testiment to his vision and ability. Highly recommended!!!THE WORLD OverviewWhy didn't they know? He could see the darkness of their souls, the void that drove them to huddle together at all times He saw the souls, too, of all the other swim clubs that he had joined or visited over the years, clubs filled with equal measures of hypocrisy, deceit, and meanness, each one seeming to its members, as primitive societies did to theirs, to be all that there is, the whole world.Saturated with what he has learned of Classics and history, a 16-year-old boy reflects upon the flow of recent events in his own history: his discovering his Irish heritage, his loss of a job, his receiving an Artistic vocation, his traumatic experiences of unrequited love. These events become psychic cataclysms that destroy his traditional worldview and force him to create a new one. They also teach him what it means to become an Artist and a man. Exploiting imagery ranging from Greek mythology to video games and employing conventional and experimental techniques, The World is a passionate, multi-layered, poetic depiction of an artistic soul's maturation. Twenty years in the writing, The World is a work that should be read again and again.

Domestic Life in Palestine ReviewA wonderful wonderful book.Although the book was written some 150 year ago, Mary Eliza Rogers takes you into the intimacies of daily life in Palestine in the 1850's as if it was occurring today. She writes from her heart with honesty, integrity and a clear mind. And although written at a time of Victorian prejudicies and colonialism she writes without bias or judgement. From her beautiful and colourful descriptions one can envisage the Holy Land as it was before undergoing the process of modernisation and change. For anyone who has any attachment to this land it is a truly wonderful and personal experience to read this book.Domestic Life in Palestine OverviewThis is a pre-1923 historical reproduction that was curated for quality. Quality assurance was conducted on each of these books in an attempt to remove books with imperfections introduced by the digitization process. Forever Art: A Thriller ReviewIf you're looking for something along the lines of Da Vinci code, Forever Art is a book that will surely surprise you. It surely exceeded my expectations! Similar to how Dan Brown draws you into Robert Langdon's exploits, Forever Art's plot blends historical fact that will allow you to be educated in the art world, while the at the same keep you on your toes from the exciting twists throughout the novel. But if you're worried that Forever Art is a mere replica of Brown's style, put your doubts aside. Her background (found on her site http://www.danielaruiz.com/about.htm), allows you to step inside the fanciful world of fashion and art she grew up in, rather than that of an academic observer simply writing about anecdotal experiences. This allows her to speak in her own unique voice, and at the same time, lends credibility to the powerful story she deftly writes.
Forever Art: A Thriller Overview"A fascinating expose of the power, the treachery and the life and death struggles behind the headlines of today's glamorous high fashion art scene in New York and Paris, delivered in a page-turning thriller format. I couldn't stop reading. This is certain to appeal to anyone who loves art!"
Don GerrardEditor and former publisher, Bookworks Books
When New York City's top art agent, April Mercier, discovers the hidden, presumed destroyed and blood-tainted Paris Collections she realizes that her family's famous name is built upon the murder of Jewish families and the pillaging of their art. Haunted by memories of abuse and murder, hunted by vengeful enemies and hounded by a Nazi hunter, April Mercier's life and sanity are teetering on the brink. But April needs to keep the Collection, not only to save her career, but to understand her damaged past.
Forever Art follows April's journey of discovery and self-discovery through the twisted, shadowy channels of the international art world, its openings, auctions, back stabbings, jealousies, dirty-deals and the overriding beauty of its substance. Based upon historical events and including today's scandals, Forever Art is a thriller that rings truer than fiction; it exposes the naked soul of a powerful but decadent business.

Her Peers: Stories by American Women, 1852-1917 ReviewThe author of this book is also my friend. When he told me it was out, I immediately bought one. It was a good read. Can't wait for his next book. Her Peers: Stories by American Women, 1852-1917 OverviewTHE OTHER AMERICAN RENAISSANCEThe American Renaissance: that vibrant period in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when Hawthorne, Melville, Poe, Twain, Whitman, Thoreau, James, and others produced many of the greatest works in American literature. But what were women up to during these extraordinary years? In fact, women at this time were vastly more popular and successful than their male counterparts, reaching enormous audiences via mainstream magazines. But their work was often dismissed by critics-in many cases, perhaps not coincidentally, the very male writers they were routinely outselling-as 'regional" or 'sentimental" fiction. Some of these women produced brilliant work that continues to entertain and surprise us today, transforming the genres and formulas of their day with subversive characters and plots and using humor, horror, or romance to carry their points. This collection spans more than 60 years, from before the upheaval of the Civil War, when women first became a major force in popular fiction, until World War I, when women like Edith Wharton and Willa Cather had obtained the respect and status previously afforded only to men.The writers included here may be less well-known than their male contemporaries, and in many cases have only recently been retrieved from obscurity, but they represent an unexplored treasure trove of American literature, featuring all the diversity and drama of women's lives in a dynamic time of conflict and change.Includes stories by:Alice CaryElizabeth Stuart PhelpsHarriet Prescott SpoffordElizabeth StoddardLouisa May AlcottElizabeth Stuart Phelps (Ward)Constance Fenimore WoolsonSarah Orne JewettRose Terry CookeCharlotte Perkins GilmanGrace KingKate ChopinAlice Dunbar-NelsonPauline E. London Blues ReviewThis books takes place in real time (during the infamous Profumo Scandal in Great Britain), using a created character to guide the reader through the events. It's very shrewdly constructed and very believable. Frewin gets under the skin of the characters and makes the claustrophobic paranoid character of the novel grow and grow and grow. What seems at first like an interesting historical re-creation becomes more of an insider's view of the events -- and a chilling commentary on the power of the gov't to make people and events just disappear. Frewin is an excellent writer who puts you right into the minds of the characters and creates the whole universe they inhabit. A friend recommended the book and i'm glad he did. I've gone on to read other Frewin novels and they're just as good, for different reasons.London Blues OverviewThe discovery of a 30-year-old blue movie leads back to director Tim Purdom and the London of the late '50s and early '60s. Purdom was a pioneer of the British porn industry and on the periphery of the government sex scandal. He directed eight films . . . but who was directing him and what was their hidden agenda?

Felder's Comprehensive, 2005 Edition: The Annual Desk Reference and Product Thesaurus for Architects, Contractors, Engineers, and Interior Designers ReviewFelder's Comprehensive is perhaps one of the more surprising books that I have come across in a while. At first glance, Felder's looks like the yellow pages for design professionals. However, its contents surpass its simplistic cover.
With 10 specific sections (awards, competitions, design centers, education, events, media, museums, organizations, trade shows, and manufacturers), Felder's is an unparalleled one-stop resource for the design industries. Likewise, Felder's offers some rare and unique findings that are easy to miss by using other (for instance, I didn't know there was an association for Asian rug retailers).
I highly recommend Felder's Comprehensive due to its valuable design-relative content and its intriguing finds.
Felder's Comprehensive, 2005 Edition: The Annual Desk Reference and Product Thesaurus for Architects, Contractors, Engineers, and Interior Designers OverviewEvery industry has its standard professional directory -- advertising has its Black Book, manufacturing its Thomas's Register -- except, that is, for architecture...and design... and construction. While there are dozens of smaller directories, each addressing a specific market niche, none speak to all three industries in a comprehensive way. And larger product directories, like Sweets, are advertising driven and therefore incomplete.Felder's Comprehensive is the first pan-industry guide of its kind, and it is many times more comprehensive than the nearest competitor. It is an annual desk reference, directory, and product source guide with more reference information than any other title currently available. It contains thousands of listings of time-sensitive and timeless reference information for anyone involved in the business or practice of architecture, design, design/build, construction, interior design, facility management, and real-estate development. For example, readers can find listings for more than 12,000 manufacturers of furnishings, fixtures, equipment, and materials listed alphabetically, and, most importantly, by product category. Felder's also lists design competitions, domestic and international trade shows, trade publications and other media, trade associations, professional organizations, and more. Most sections are indexed and cross-referenced for easy referral and identification. Felder's is the first truly comprehensive reference guide of its kind for the A/E/C marketplace and is certain to become the industry standard.

The House in Good Taste, Illustrated With Photographs in Color and Black and White ReviewWithout understanding much about interior decorating and design, the name of Elsie de Wolfe was brought to my attention by "Elle" and "Marie Claire" Editor, as well as "Project Runway" Judge Nina García; as the woman who pioneered the field in America during the 1930's. Although afraid that I would be consumed by her suggestions on using chintz and frills whenever possible, I was pleasantly surprised and utterly educated in the most appropriate approaches for decorating my own surroundings.
De Wolfe, who certainly had a most interesting life - married to a diplomat, while also later sharing her life in an auspicious lesbian relationship with a heavily set woman, Elizabeth Marbury, who looked very much like a man - writes about decorating with an endearing quality and a language that immediately puts the reader at ease while at the same time educates her without being condescending.
In "The house in good taste" De Wolfe covers everything, from architectural design and layout of the ideal house, going room by room, and with all the considerations of the "olden days", such as the existence of a vestibule or entrance hall to "warm up to the house" before making oneself comfortable and fully in it, the existence of grand stairs thereafter, a cozy drawing room for the guests of the lady of the house, and the privacy of a studio for the man.
Throughout all her concepts, she emphasizes three major characteristics of tasteful interior decoration: suitability, simplicity and proportion. Even when at the beginning of the book one may consider her insistence on these a bit petulant, towards the end, one is totally sold on the concept.
But De Wolfe does not write lazy words. She demonstrates her talent hands-on, using as examples her own houses, the mansion at Irving Place in the outskirts of New York, and an apartment acquired later in the heart of the city. In unprecedented story-like fashion which I did not expect to find in a book about decorating, she advises on the whys and wherefores of how she and her partner, Ms. Marbury, brought the houses to life. She provides minute descriptions on everything, from the treatment of walls, the placement of lighting and the fabrics to use for upholstery; and although chintz is highly recommended, so is discretion and sobriety in its designs.
The book ends with the decorating concepts she used in the Villa Trianon, which she and Marbury purchased in the gardens of Versailles, and which they occupied during the summers. One can only wonder at the marvelous piece of real estate the two women acquired just off what used to be the ancient French court, and how they remodeled everything, no expense spared, including the landscaping. A closing chapter on how to choose clocks, stools and porcelain stoves closes the volume.
I would recommend this book as a starting point for the woman who is at task in her own search inside the intimidating field of decorating, since as De Wolfe asserts, a woman is invariably judged by the house she keeps. Although nowadays there are countless more illustrative volumes to get ideas from, this book should definitely be used as the backbone for any good decorating plan. The House in Good Taste, Illustrated With Photographs in Color and Black and White OverviewPublisher: New York, The Century Co.Publication date: 1915Subjects: Interior decorationNotes: This is an OCR reprint. Devil Goddess: a supernatural mystery ReviewHaving read Robert Amsel's first novel, "Manhattan Pharaoh" I've been looking forward to his second, "Devil Goddess," and it's been well worth the wait. The new book is subtitled "A Supernatural Mystery" and it is exactly that. Although the writing is modern, the structure reminds me of the occult works of certain Victorian writers, such as Bulwer-Lytton. This is due to the intricate plotting and the use of coincidence (in this instance, another name for Fate).
The story concerns a modern schoolteacher living in Manhattan named Rachel Belgrave. She begins having horrific dreams in which she sees the acting out of vivid long-ago murders. Her new boyfriend, an Englishman named Tom Blakely, realizes that the dreams she describes are actual events that took place in London in 1888. For some reason, Rachel is reliving in nightmares the famous Jack the Ripper murders. But they are more than just dreams. It is as if the spirit of this famous murderer is haunting Rachel herself.
Fearful that she is losing her mind, Rachel flees New York to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, hoping to find some peace of mind. Instead, she soon becomes involved in actual copycat Ripper killings, starting with the violent murder of a neighbor. Soon the body count rises. With the help of Tom and a police detective, Liam Callaghan, Rachel begins a search back into her own family history that ultimately leads her and her friends into battle with an ancient force, a bloodthirsty goddess, whose acolytes are determined to destroy Rachel.
I don't really want to go any more into the story than that, since this is a mystery in which each clue provides just one small piece of an elaborate, intricate puzzle. But unlike a regular murder mystery, the puzzle is supernatural in that it deals with a number of ghosts, communication with the dead, demon possession, and ancient cults and rituals.
Although the author presents a much darker view of the world than in his first work, there are also elements of humor and satire juxtaposed in an eerie way against some of the more gruesome occurrences. These are helpful in relieving some of the tension, but only briefly, since something terrifying soon takes place again.
In short, I loved it! Although the book is 474 pages, I read through it in one weekend. This novel is certainly not for the squeamish but for those who like the rare and unusual in occult fiction as much as I do. Jack the Ripper enthusiasts will also find much to savor and enjoy, including the author's imaginative recreation of the actual Ripper murders, as well as an interesting theory regarding similarities in the crimes that many Ripperologists overlook. On the negative side, the book is an oversized paperback priced at $25.95, which I found a bit steep, despite the beautiful artwork. Still, the roller coaster ride this book took me on was worth the price, at least, to this reviewer.
Devil Goddess: a supernatural mystery OverviewIn 1856 rural England, a lunatic plunges to his death through an asylum window.
In 1882 India, a British missionary perishes under mysterious circumstances, and his ghost is believed to haunt the missionary house where he died.
In 1888 London, a killer of prostitutes known as Jack the Ripper terrorizes the streets of Whitechapel.
In 2003 Philadelphia, a series of vicious murder-mutilations goes unsolved.
In 2005 Manhattan, a young woman fears she is possessed by a demon. But she is wrong!
In this epic tale of terror spanning centuries, a young woman, Rachel Belgrave, discovers that it is her destiny to stop a cold-blooded killer...or die in the attempt. With the help of two men who love her, one a psychic; the other, a police detective, Rachel takes a harrowing journey into a supernatural world where she must do battle with a demon goddess—an ancient force, immortal, blood-thirsty, and indestructible.
"Whoever the real Jack the Ripper was, Ripperologists will whistle at the author's cleverness in making connections between the Ripper's signature crimes and earlier, until now unrelated horrors. This intricately structured horror novel unfolds like a well-layered mystery in which the hapless heroine must fight for both her sanity and her life."PERRY BRASS, author of The Substance of God a spiritual thriller

The Fool's Tale ReviewI just finished reading this book and I loved it. Posy, the lead character is an adorable and slightly eccentric young woman, who on April Fool's Day, experiences a multitude of emotionally stressful situations while interacting with many different friends and acquintances over a one day period.
I would love to see this book made into a movie. All the characters were funny and/or unique and I wanted the story to continue. I'd love to see a sequel to this GREAT book because I enjoyed it that much. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an entertaining read and I hope LJ Jones writes more stories. Two thumbs up!The Fool's Tale OverviewPenelope Truman--Posy to family and friends--unwittingly comes out to her brother on April Fool's Day. Her brother thinks it's a great joke in a long-standing family competition for April Fool jokes. As she prepares to host her niece's surprise wedding shower, Posy must try to set matters straight, so to speak, as well as handle a series of mishaps in this modern day comedy of errors set in a Southern college town.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Household Solutions ReviewAs a new homeowner, I purchased this book to help me with the day to day chores of owning a home. We bought a 15 year old house that was in great condition - but that had 15 year old wallpaper in every room. I had stripped a few rooms before buying this guide. I was very dubious about the homemade solution of equal parts water and vinegar to strip wallpaper. Vinegar and water, to strip vinyl wallpaper off my bathroom walls? No way. IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM! Easy, virtually free and no mess! I've told all my friends who re-decorate to use this tip!
As far as the rest of the book, it gives very good, clear and concise information, directions and tips on everything from cleaning your house, to feeding your family. It's a wonderful guide for any new (or not so new) homeowner to have on hand! The Complete Idiot's Guide to Household Solutions Overview

Residential Design Using AutoCAD 2006 ReviewThis is a great book for someone looking to learn Autocad. I had absolutely no previous knowledge of Autocad and have completed several floor plans using the program in a short time. It took me about a week to get through the tutorial (I spent a lot of time with it) but can now efficiently navigate the program and understand many of its functions.
As far as the tutorial goes, you start by creating some simple shapes and then items such as sinks, windows, and fixtures to get used to the commands. Then you start the floor plan of the home, draw the elevations, then the sectionals. Autocad is a very complex program and I would have been lost without a book to walk me through. It was perfect for someone who wanted to learn about residential design on their ownResidential Design Using AutoCAD 2006 OverviewThis textbook starts with a basic introduction to AutoCAD 2006 and then begins a house floor plan. Using step-by-step tutorial lessons, the residential project is followed through to create elevations, sections, details, etc.Throughout the project, new AutoCAD commands are covered at the appropriate time. Focus is placed on the most essential parts of a command rather than an exhaustive review of every sub-feature of a particular command.Table of Contents1. GETTING STARTED WITH AUTOCAD 2006 2.
