The Handyman's Reality ReviewI criticized Nick's first book, "Handyman's Dream," both because the two lovers were too sicky sweet ("oh, Honey," "oh, Darlin'", etc) and because their love came too easily with too little conflict between them. Well, Nick remedied that last weakness in the sequel! The two, by and large in a wonderful, loving relationship that continues to grow and thrive in the sequel, nevertheless come to realize that living with Prince Charming brings problems that one might not foresee in the courting/falling in love phase. The two lovers are both sincere and mean well, but they each have flaws and character traits that are not even "flaws" but can cause some conflict with their partner. One is that Ed doesn't easily start change in his life (though he goes through and approves some big changes in the course of this book), while Rick welcomes change and starts changes without sufficiently thinking them through or talking them through with his partner. Yes, fireworks ensue.
The book's plotline is very credible (though the dialogue sounded a bit stilted at times). The two main characters and their families and friends (especially Gordy and Mrs. Penfield, but others as well) are delights. Rick's thoughtlessness or maybe I should say exuberance for change without thinking fully through all the possible complications almost broke up the relationship
In fact, in some ways, the book might have been even better (and longer) if Rick HAD accepted the new job offer and moved to Indianapolis. Then he and Ed would've had to think over their relationship and see what would happen. Unfortunately, they might not have gotten back together had Nick gone that route in his plotline
Great story. In some ways, better than the original. I love these guys and their families and friends and a part of me hopes that Nick finds in himself another story about them a few years down the road so that we can see how they handle their love and what happens when Mrs. Penfield isn't around any more to bail them out.
