Sanctum of Souls: Second Souls ReviewAll in all, I felt this book was pretty...hm, what's good word for it...inexperienced. It's not like I couldn't see some good potential in there, because I could; but at the same time, the author's inexperience with writing and publishing really showed.
The good side is that it's got a decently interesting concept and a well-plotted story that takes some interesting turns.
The bad side is basically a lot of rookie mistakes. The names of the major characters are VERY distracting - being a mythology nut, I can see what the author was going for, but the only names that really work are Kyle Yama and Detective Mors, because they sound like normal names. It is, however, distracting that Detective Mors doesn't seem to have a first name. He's just "Detective."
There's also some head-banging character inconsistencies that don't really make sense. The one that stands out in my mind is our main character Nico arguing with Detective, and what she says is, "I believe in logic. You can't prove this is magic. Something else could have caused this," yet she automatically accepts that she has the soul of the dead cop living in her brain. There are two logical conclusions to this situation: 1) it's magic, or 2) you're insane; but she never comes to either of those. It's very distracting. The pacing early on is also buggy as hell.
All in all, the books problems are rookie mistakes; and I don't think the manuscript should've been self-published without some heavy revisions and an editor's eye. But it's certainly not as bad as some self-published books out there, so I have to give the author credit for at least trying.Sanctum of Souls: Second Souls OverviewNico Enma is starting her last year of high school. She has many problems to deal with, an eccentric grandmother, a mother who she doesn't ever agree with, and being an outcast at her school. Detective Mors has his own troubles dealing with a new assistant trying to rise in the ranks and tracking down a brutal killer. One day changes the situation for both of them and they are forced to deal with each other's problems. Mors's soul has become attached to Nico's body, but how this happened they aren't sure. As they try to find the answers, they deal with old problems. However, new troubles arise that they never knew as they discover the world of the undead that is hidden within the living. Will they catch the killer or will the killer catch them? As they try not to drive each other crazy, they track down the murderer, deal with new relationships, maintain current ones with family and friends, and try to survive.
