God Doesn't Sleep -- Sometimes He Just Takes A Nap - An Accumulation of Concise Narratives ReviewReading Warren J Perret's book of short stories GOD DOESN'T SLEEP...SOMETIMES HE JUST TAKES A NAP is like returning to a place you think you know but something is different, something is awry, something is oddly ominous, but you simply can't put your finger on it. Perret is an unpretentious writer, a writer who has superb craftsmanship but never draws attention to his skill: these stories just unravel and stab you in the gut on the final page. The cover of this very readable book gives a strong hint as to what is to follow once the book is opened: a seemingly plain blacktop road flanked by fields and hills and capped by a beautiful sky is broken into chards in the foreground - presenting the viewer with the uneasy sense that something is wrong, something more than just a frontal impediment in an ordinary road. And that is how these seven stories, rich in imagination and terrifying in message roll out.
For each story Perret creates a cast of seemingly real, everyday people, gradually introduces some element of the strange, and that element (at times only felt by the reader instead of clarified by the author) turns the story into a nightmare. An old Western town is hit by a plague: the Doc, the Sheriff, and the Priest care for the dying without knowing the etiology of the fatal disease until it all comes together in the Church where the origin of the plague is conquered in a shocking way. A Psychiatrist deals with a patient who has Dissociative Identity Disorder and the doctor must deal with all four aspects of the of a simple man's personality fracture, the 'treatment' for which is a startling end. A Vietnamese immigrant seeks advice from an old blind Vietnamese Buddhist teacher in attempting to relinquish his old religion to integrate with the religion of his new friend in order to be more American, a choice that is not without surprises. An unemployed father takes a job as a Pizza deliveryman to the chagrin of his abusive wife and the embarrassment of his children and in his alcoholic state performs a crime that has a bizarre outcome. A man and woman become lovers after the man's wife's death and the reason for the needed secrecy of their affair is revealed in a startling fashion. A mother and son, though very close, hide a secret that only a death can uncover.
And so it goes throughout this series of excursions into the realm of the gothic and grotesque, yet the settings and the ideas begin so real that each story snaps that tenuous cord with reality - a trait that makes for a very fine suspense writer. Warren J Perret must be an acute observer in his sessions as the head of the Department of Substance Abuse and Addictive disorders: these stories are mined from a mind that has overheard (or simply created) very strange things.
