Devil Goddess: a supernatural mystery ReviewHaving read Robert Amsel's first novel, "Manhattan Pharaoh" I've been looking forward to his second, "Devil Goddess," and it's been well worth the wait. The new book is subtitled "A Supernatural Mystery" and it is exactly that. Although the writing is modern, the structure reminds me of the occult works of certain Victorian writers, such as Bulwer-Lytton. This is due to the intricate plotting and the use of coincidence (in this instance, another name for Fate). The story concerns a modern schoolteacher living in Manhattan named Rachel Belgrave. She begins having horrific dreams in which she sees the acting out of vivid long-ago murders. Her new boyfriend, an Englishman named Tom Blakely, realizes that the dreams she describes are actual events that took place in London in 1888. For some reason, Rachel is reliving in nightmares the famous Jack the Ripper murders. But they are more than just dreams. It is as if the spirit of this famous murderer is haunting Rachel herself.
Fearful that she is losing her mind, Rachel flees New York to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, hoping to find some peace of mind. Instead, she soon becomes involved in actual copycat Ripper killings, starting with the violent murder of a neighbor. Soon the body count rises. With the help of Tom and a police detective, Liam Callaghan, Rachel begins a search back into her own family history that ultimately leads her and her friends into battle with an ancient force, a bloodthirsty goddess, whose acolytes are determined to destroy Rachel.
I don't really want to go any more into the story than that, since this is a mystery in which each clue provides just one small piece of an elaborate, intricate puzzle. But unlike a regular murder mystery, the puzzle is supernatural in that it deals with a number of ghosts, communication with the dead, demon possession, and ancient cults and rituals.
Although the author presents a much darker view of the world than in his first work, there are also elements of humor and satire juxtaposed in an eerie way against some of the more gruesome occurrences. These are helpful in relieving some of the tension, but only briefly, since something terrifying soon takes place again.
In short, I loved it! Although the book is 474 pages, I read through it in one weekend. This novel is certainly not for the squeamish but for those who like the rare and unusual in occult fiction as much as I do. Jack the Ripper enthusiasts will also find much to savor and enjoy, including the author's imaginative recreation of the actual Ripper murders, as well as an interesting theory regarding similarities in the crimes that many Ripperologists overlook. On the negative side, the book is an oversized paperback priced at $25.95, which I found a bit steep, despite the beautiful artwork. Still, the roller coaster ride this book took me on was worth the price, at least, to this reviewer.

"Whoever the real Jack the Ripper was, Ripperologists will whistle at the author's cleverness in making connections between the Ripper's signature crimes and earlier, until now unrelated horrors. This intricately structured horror novel unfolds like a well-layered mystery in which the hapless heroine must fight for both her sanity and her life."PERRY BRASS, author of The Substance of God a spiritual thriller
