Skeletal Marriage: My Anorexia ReviewThere are very few stories today that offer insight into the world of men who develop anorexia nervosa. While some might think that men don't "get" such a disease, statistics reveal a rise in eating disorders across age groups in men but this is not reflected in the amount of news coverage of this affliction. Jim Kohl has courageously recounted his battle with the disorder, and subsequent recovery, with candor and insight. It was good to read about someone who found light at the end of the tunnel--which is not always the case with this disorder. I found myself both saddened by his initial contact with uninformed medical professionals who claimed "man don't get anorexia" and relieved and heartened by his connection with a stellar therapist who helped him discover his own voice and reasons for living. This book hits upon many of the issues at the root of the disease, how it becomes an obsession, and what methods can help a person recover. This is is not a "self-help" book but an honest and unsentimental look at a scary disease and the tough road the author trod to recovery.Skeletal Marriage: My Anorexia OverviewWhen you have nothing left, is there any strength to bring you back?Anorexia gripped Jim Kohl when he was 34 and held him prisoner for almost 2 years. Skeletal Marriage shows how Jim started on the anorexic path, the games it made him play with calories and treadmill miles, the way it ended his marriage, and how it nearly killed him. Anorexia is a character with a mind of its own in the book. Jim listens to the anorexic voice and builds its strength until he has no choice but to listen and obey. Jim weighed nothing, was nothing, and still survived to write this book.
