Darkside: A Novel ReviewBelinda Bauer's "Darkside" takes place in the British village of Shipcott, where a serial killer is dispatching elderly and helpless residents. The first victim is Margaret Priddy, a woman in her sixties who was left paralyzed after her horse stumbled and threw her into a telegraph pole. For the past three years, Priddy has been "slack and immobile and dependent on other people for her most basic needs." She can only "blink in terror" when someone places a pillow over her face and ends her life. The village bobby is thirty-one year old PC Jonas Holly, a gentle soul who lovingly cares for his wife, Lucy, a victim of MS. When Margaret Priddy's death is declared suspicious, Jonas calls for help. A team of homicide detectives arrives, led by DCI Marvel, a foulmouthed, arrogant, and verbally abusive man who delights in deriding and humiliating his underlings. Marvel takes an immediate dislike to Holly, whom he relegates to the sidelines. When dead bodies continue to pile up, Marvel and his colleagues are baffled. How can a predator claim so many victims in such a small, close-knit place, and leave little useful forensic evidence behind? What the DCI fails to understand is that "almost everything important happens underneath, and away from public view...." One must look "far below the surface," where the truth lies.
This is an intense, intimate, and atmospheric psychological thriller in which the author exposes the innermost secrets of Shipcott's residents. Someone passing through might see a boring little place, covered with moors and dotted with sheep. What could possible go wrong in this bucolic setting? A great deal, as it turns out. Shipcott's inhabitants have their share of problems: There is a war vet who lost a leg, a bitter alcoholic whose husband was killed in a fire, and an addled young car thief who was born with a club foot. Everywhere, in big cities as well as small hamlets, there are men and women who face formidable physical and emotional challenges.
One such person is Lucy, Jonas's courageous wife. As her condition steadily deteriorates, she relies on scary movies to entertain her, and valiantly tries to be strong for her terrified husband. We cannot help but feel protective towards this frail former kindergarten teacher. Meanwhile, as DCI Marvel becomes ever more frustrated by inquiries that lead nowhere, he drinks too much and lashes out at anyone within reach. "Darkside" is a gripping, chilling, "take-no-prisoners" thriller that concludes with an orgy of violence and a provocative twist. The ending, which some may dismiss as too contrived and melodramatic, is sure to generate heated discussion among stunned readers.
Darkside: A Novel OverviewIn bleak midwinter, the people of Shipcott are shocked by the murder of an elderly woman in her bed. As snow cuts off the village, local policeman Jonas Holly is torn between catching a brutal killer and protecting his vulnerable wife, Lucy. When the inquiry is commandeered by an abrasive senior detective, Jonas finds himself derided by his colleagues and ashamed to admit to Lucy that he's been sidelined. It seems his first murder investigation may be over before it's begun. But when he receives a series of increasingly sinister anonymous notes, Jonas is thrust back into the center of the case. Someone in the village is taunting him, blaming him for the tragedy. Someone thinks he's not doing his job; someone seems to know every move he makes. And soon Jonas has to ask: Who's hunting who?
