Haunted Houses: Guide to Spooky, Creepy and Strange Places Across the USA (Stackpole Haunted) ReviewWith an interest in haunted houses for many years, I took this book out of the library around Halloween. It's an informative and fascinating read with some stories that can cause shivers while you read them. It's collection of cases of real haunted houses, some that have actually been investigated and found to be legitimate cases of hauntings. I was astonished to discover just how many haunted houses there are in the US in all 50 states. Many of these places, I have visited in the past without knowing about the ghosts: I never saw one either. The stories are brief, but the writers put just the right amount of information to enlighten and entertain the reader. It is more of a guidebook. There are more than 180 houses the books covers with many cases of ghosts, some houses have one ghost, others have a troupe. In some cases the ghosts appear as an actual live human that shows guests around then disappear. In one case, involving a cafe, a female ghost followed a patron home then vanished on her porch. Eeerie. All in all a good book. There is contact information after each house on visiting and whether it is open to the public or not. A great number of them are now bed and breakfasts. A few are not open to the public. Some, the hosts are proud of their ghosts and anxious to share the stories. In some, the hosts won't say a word. In some, there has been so much activity, or employees or guests have been so scared that rooms or sections of a house have been closed off.
